Abstract

A system includes at least partially autonomous vehicles, at least partially separated interconnected roadways, and a management system. Each of the vehicles is configured to cooperate with another vehicle or an area controller. The management system is configured to receive requests to transport, which may have respective start points and respective destinations. Additionally, the management system is configured, responsive to receiving the request, to assign a vehicle to fulfill the request. The assigned vehicle is configured to transport a person from the respective start point, at least in part via the interconnected roadways, to the respective destination.

Claims (76)

1. A transportation system for autonomous vehicle travel, comprising:

a plurality of autonomous vehicles;

a roadway system including:

a system of interconnected roadways; and

a plurality of boarding zones distributed along the system of interconnected roadways; and

a control system configured to:

receive a request, from a passenger, to transport the passenger from a first boarding zone to a second boarding zone; and

in response to receiving the request, assign a first autonomous vehicle of the plurality of autonomous vehicles to fulfill the request, wherein

the first autonomous vehicle is configured to:

receive the assignment from the control system;

in response to receiving the assignment, transport the passenger from the first boarding zone to the second boarding zone at least in part via the system of interconnected roadways; and

while transporting the passenger:

for a first duration, coordinate travel with a second autonomous vehicle of the plurality of autonomous vehicles, wherein coordinating travel with the second autonomous vehicle comprises adjusting a speed of the first autonomous vehicle such that the first autonomous vehicle and the second autonomous vehicle arrive at the second boarding zone at different times; and

for a second duration, operate uncoordinated from the second autonomous vehicle.

2. The transportation system of claim 1 , wherein:

the control system includes a boarding zone management system associated with the first boarding zone; and

the first autonomous vehicle is configured to receive vehicle operation commands from the boarding zone management system when the first autonomous vehicle is within a threshold distance of the first boarding zone.

3. The transportation system of claim 1 , wherein the first autonomous vehicle is further configured to coordinate travel with the second autonomous vehicle when the first autonomous vehicle and the second autonomous vehicle are within a boundary of the first boarding zone.

4. The transportation system of claim 1 , wherein the first autonomous vehicle is further configured to coordinate travel with the second autonomous vehicle when the first autonomous vehicle and the second autonomous vehicle are merging onto the system of interconnected roadways from the first boarding zone.

5. The transportation system of claim 1 , wherein:

the control system is configured to cause the second autonomous vehicle to change at least one of a speed or a direction of its travel in order to allow the first autonomous vehicle to merge from the first boarding zone onto the system of interconnected roadways.

6. A transportation system comprising:

a plurality of autonomous vehicles;

a roadway system including:

a system of interconnected roadways; and

a plurality of boarding zones distributed along the system of interconnected roadways; and

a control system comprising:

a track management system configured to issue instructions to autonomous vehicles operating on a roadway segment of the system of interconnected roadways;

a boarding zone management system configured to issue instructions to autonomous vehicles operating in a boarding zone of the plurality of boarding zones; and

a reservation system configured to:

receive a request, from a passenger, to transport the passenger from the boarding zone to a destination location; and

assign an autonomous vehicle of the plurality of autonomous vehicles to fulfill the request, wherein

the assigned autonomous vehicle is configured to:

receive the assignment from the control system;

in response to receiving the assignment, transport the passenger from the boarding zone to the destination location at least in part via the system of interconnected roadways; and

while transporting the passenger:

receive instructions from the track management system while the assigned autonomous vehicle is travelling along the roadway segment of the system of interconnected roadways; and

receive instructions from the boarding zone management system while the assigned autonomous vehicle is travelling in the boarding zone; and

the boarding zone management system is configured to send a request to the track management system to initiate a merge operation of the assigned autonomous vehicle into the roadway segment.

7. The transportation system of claim 6 , wherein the boarding zone management system is configured to transfer control authority over the assigned autonomous vehicle to the track management system when the assigned autonomous vehicle leaves the boarding zone.

8. The transportation system of claim 7 , wherein:

the boarding zone management system is a first boarding zone management system;

the boarding zone is a first boarding zone;

the destination location is a second boarding zone associated with a second boarding zone management system; and

the track management system is configured to transfer control authority over the assigned autonomous vehicle to the second boarding zone management system when the assigned autonomous vehicle enters the second boarding zone.

9. The transportation system of claim 6 , wherein the track management system is configured to, in response to receiving the request to initiate the merge operation, cause an additional autonomous vehicle travelling on the roadway segment to change at least one of a speed or a direction of its travel in order to allow the assigned autonomous vehicle to merge from the boarding zone onto the roadway segment.

10. The transportation system of claim 7 , wherein:

the assigned autonomous vehicle comprises a vehicle controller configured to identify one or more additional autonomous vehicles travelling along the roadway segment; and

form a vehicle shoal with the one or more additional autonomous vehicles.

11. The transportation system of claim 10 , wherein the autonomous vehicle and the one or more additional autonomous vehicles in the vehicle shoal are configured to share sensor data during shoaling operations.

12. The transportation system of claim 10 , wherein identifying the one or more additional autonomous vehicles comprises determining whether the one or more additional autonomous vehicles satisfy a shoaling criteria.

13. The transportation system of claim 12 , wherein the shoaling criteria includes a determination that the one or more additional autonomous vehicles and the assigned autonomous vehicle have a same destination location.

14. A method of operating a transportation system for autonomous vehicle travel, comprising:

at a transportation system comprising:

a plurality of autonomous vehicles; and

a roadway system including:

a system of interconnected roadways; and

a plurality of boarding zones distributed along the system of interconnected roadways;

at a control system:

receiving a request to transport a payload from a first boarding zone to a second boarding zone of the plurality of boarding zones; and

in response to receiving the request, assigning a first autonomous vehicle of the plurality of autonomous vehicles to fulfill the request; and

at the first autonomous vehicle:

receiving the assignment from the control system;

in response to receiving the assignment, transporting the payload from the first boarding zone to the second boarding zone at least in part via the system of interconnected roadways;

for a first duration, coordinating travel with a second autonomous vehicle of the plurality of autonomous vehicles, wherein coordinating travel with the second autonomous vehicle includes adjusting a speed of the first autonomous vehicle such that the first autonomous vehicle and the second autonomous vehicle arrive at the second boarding zone at different times; and

for a second duration, operating uncoordinated from the second autonomous vehicle.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising, at the first autonomous vehicle:

for a third duration, coordinating travel with a third autonomous vehicle of the plurality of autonomous vehicles when the first autonomous vehicle and the third autonomous vehicle are merging onto the system of interconnected roadways from the first boarding zone.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising, at the second autonomous vehicle and during coordinated travel with the first autonomous vehicle, adjusting at least one of a speed or a direction of travel of the second autonomous vehicle.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the payload is at least one of a passenger or freight.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the request to transport the payload is received from a mobile phone associated with a passenger.

19. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:
