Abstract

Air cleaner assemblies, components therefor, and features thereof are described. Also described are methods of assembly and use. In depicted examples, the air cleaner assemblies and components optionally use advantageous housing seal features. Methods of assembly and use are described.

Claims (85)

1. A filter cartridge comprising:

(a) filter media having first and second ends; and,

(b) a housing seal arrangement positioned on one of the first or second ends of the filter media and comprising:

(i) a radially directed housing seal surface defining a non-circular configuration having at least two, radially outwardly projecting sections and at least one, radially inwardly projecting section between the at least two, radially outwardly projecting sections to define the at least two, radially outwardly projecting sections and the at least one, radially inwardly projecting section in the radially directed housing seal surface, in a direction around, and relative to, an opening, wherein the radially directed housing seal surface is a surface that engages a housing to provide a seal, in use; and

(ii) the radially outwardly projecting sections are not radially evenly spaced on the radially directed housing seal surface.

2. A filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the filter media comprises pleated media surrounding an open filter interior.

3. A filter cartridge according to claim 2 wherein:

(a) the filter media has a cylindrical outer configuration.

4. A filter cartridge according to claim 2 wherein:

(a) the filter media has a conical outer configuration.

5. A filter cartridge according to claim 2 further comprising:

(a) a first end cap positioned on the filter media first end and having an opening therethrough, and a second end cap positioned on the filter media second end.

6. A filter cartridge according to claim 5 wherein:

(a) the housing seal arrangement is positioned on the first end cap.

7. A filter cartridge according to claim 5 wherein:

(a) the second end cap is a closed end cap, and further comprising a liner extending from the first end cap to the second end cap.

8. A filter cartridge according to claim 5 wherein:

(a) the at least one radially inwardly projecting section comprises a plurality of spaced radially inwardly projecting sections.

9. A filter cartridge according to claim 8 wherein:

(a) the plurality of spaced radially inwardly projecting sections comprise 2 to 8 projections.

10. A filter cartridge according to claim 8 wherein:

(a) the plurality of spaced radially inwardly projecting sections are non-circular.

11. A filter cartridge according to claim 8 wherein:

(a) the plurality of spaced radially inwardly projecting sections are constructed to engage spaced recesses in an outlet tube of a housing when the filter cartridge is installed, in use.

12. A filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the filter media comprises alternating fluted media and facing media.

13. A filter cartridge according to claim 12 wherein:

(a) the filter media comprises a coiled arrangement of the alternating fluted media and facing media.

14. A filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the filter media comprises a non-circular coiled arrangement of a filter media strip comprising a fluted sheet and a facing sheet.

15. A filter cartridge according to claim 14 wherein:

(a) the non-circular coiled arrangement comprises an oval shape.

16. A filter cartridge according to claim 12 wherein:

(a) the filter media comprises a stack of the alternating fluted media and filter media.

17. An air filter cartridge according to claim 16 wherein:

(a) the alternating fluted media and facing media form flutes extending in an axial direction.

18. An air filter cartridge according to claim 17 wherein:

(a) the flutes comprise inlet flutes open to flow at the first end and closed to flow at the second end, and outlet flutes closed to flow at the first end and open to flow at the second end.

19. An air filter cartridge according to claim 18 wherein:

(a) the alternating fluted media and facing media are secured to each other at one of the first end and the second end.

20. A filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the radially directed housing seal surface comprises two radially outwardly projecting sections.

21. A filter cartridge according to claim 2 wherein:

(a) the radially directed housing seal surface comprises two radially inwardly projecting sections, one on each side of each radially outwardly projecting section.

22. A filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the radially directed housing seal surface comprises a radially directed seal surface including at least three, radially outwardly projecting sections alternating with at least three, radially inwardly projecting sections.

23. A filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the radially directed housing seal surface comprises 4-12 radially outwardly projecting sections and 4-12 radially inwardly projecting sections.

24. A filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the radially directed housing seal surface comprises 3-8 radially outwardly projecting sections and 3-8 radially inwardly projecting sections.

25. A filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the housing seal surface includes no straight section extending completely between any two outwardly projecting sections.

26. A filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the housing seal surface includes no straight sub-section positioned between adjacent outwardly projecting sections.

27. A filter cartridge according to claim 1 including:

(a) a preformed end piece having the opening, positioned on the media;

(b) the housing seal arrangement being positioned on the preformed end piece with the radially directed housing seal surface comprising a portion molded-in-place on the cartridge with a portion of the preformed end piece embedded therein.

28. A filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the radially directed housing seal surface is a radially outwardly directed housing seal surface.

29. A filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the radially directed housing seal surface is a radially inwardly directed housing seal surface.

30. A filter cartridge comprising:

(a) filter media having first and second ends;

(b) a first end cap positioned on one of the first or second ends of the filter media and having an opening therethrough; and,

(b) a housing seal arrangement positioned on the first end cap and comprising:

(i) a radially directed housing seal surface defining a non-circular configuration having at least two, radially outwardly projecting sections and at least one, radially inwardly projecting section between the at least two, radially outwardly projecting sections to define the at least two, radially outwardly projecting sections and the at least one, radially inwardly projecting section in the radially directed housing seal surface, in a direction around, and relative to, an opening, wherein the radially directed housing seal surface is a surface that engages a housing to provide a seal, in use.

31. A filter cartridge according to claim 30 further comprising:

(a) a second end cap positioned on the other of the first or second ends of the filter media, and wherein the second end cap is a closed end cap.

32. A filter cartridge according to claim 30 wherein:

(a) the at least one radially inwardly projecting section comprises a plurality of spaced radially inwardly projecting sections.

33. A filter cartridge according to claim 32 wherein:

(a) the plurality of spaced radially inwardly projecting sections are constructed to engage spaced recesses in an outlet tube of a housing when the filter cartridge is installed, in use.

34. A filter cartridge according to claim 30 wherein:

(a) the filter media comprises pleated media surrounding an open filter interior.

35. A filter cartridge according to claim 30 wherein:

(a) the radially directed housing seal surface comprises two radially outwardly projecting sections.

36. A filter cartridge according to claim 35 wherein:

(a) the radially directed housing seal surface comprises two radially inwardly projecting sections, one on each side of each radially outwardly projecting section.

37. A filter cartridge according to claim 30 wherein:

(a) the radially directed housing seal surface comprises a radially directed seal surface including at least three, radially outwardly projecting sections alternating with at least three, radially inwardly projecting sections.

38. A filter cartridge according to claim 30 wherein:

(a) the radially directed housing seal surface comprises 4-12 radially outwardly projecting sections and 4-12 radially inwardly projecting sections.

39. A filter cartridge according to claim 32 wherein:

(a) the plurality of spaced radially inwardly projecting sections comprise 2 to 8 projections.
