Abstract

Systems and methods have demonstrated the capability of rapidly cooling the contents of pods containing the ingredients for food and drinks.

Claims (35)

1. A system for providing a plurality of single servings of cooled food or drink, the system comprising:

a plurality of shelf stable pods; and

a vending machine configured to store the plurality of shelf stable pods at room temperature, the vending machine comprising:

a user interface operable to select a pod of the stored plurality of shelf stable pods;

an evaporator defining a receptacle to receive the selected pod;

a refrigeration system operable to cool at least one ingredient of the selected pod when the selected pod is received in the evaporator; and

a mixing motor operable to rotate a mixing paddle to churn the at least one ingredient to produce the single serving of the cooled food or drink,

wherein the vending machine is operable to dispense the single serving of the cooled food or drink from the selected pod while the selected pod is received in the evaporator of the vending machine.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the vending machine comprises a dispenser operable to dispense the single serving of the cooled food or drink.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the vending machine comprises a storage receptacle for storing used pods.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein each pod of the plurality of shelf stable pods is rendered shelf stable by subjecting each pod to a sterilization process.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the sterilization process is at least one of a retort process or an aseptic filling process.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the selected pod comprises the mixing paddle.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein each pod of the plurality of shelf stable pods comprises a respective mixing paddle.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein a sidewall of the plurality of pods is aluminum and each respective mixing paddle is aluminum.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the refrigeration system is operable to cool the at least one ingredient of the selected pod from the room temperature to a temperature between 17-26 degrees Fahrenheit within 2 minutes.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of shelf stable pods are self-stable for at least 6 months.

11. A method of producing a single serving of cooled food or drink, the method comprising:

filling a plurality of pods with at least one ingredient for producing the single serving of the cooled food or drink;

sterilizing the plurality of pods such that the plurality of pods become shelf stable;

storing the plurality of shelf stable pods in a vending machine at room temperature;

selecting a pod of the plurality of pods using a user interface of the vending machine;

inserting the selected pod in a receptacle of an evaporator of the vending machine;

cooling the inserted pod using a refrigeration system of the vending machine while simultaneously churning at least one ingredient within the inserted pod using a mixing paddle to produce the single serving of the cooled food or drink; and

dispensing the single serving of the cooled food or drink from the pod while the pod is inserted into the receptacle of the evaporator of the vending machine.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising storing the used pod in a receptacle of the vending machine after the single serving of the cooled food or drink is dispensed from the vending machine.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the selected pod is an aluminum pod and the mixing paddle is an aluminum mixing paddle that is disposed within the aluminum pod.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising recycling the aluminum pod and the aluminum mixing paddle.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein sterilizing the plurality of pods comprises subjecting the plurality of pods to at least one of a retort process or an aseptic filling process.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein sterilizing the plurality of pods comprises simultaneously heating and mixing the at least one ingredient in each respective pod.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein simultaneously heating and mixing the at least one ingredient in each respective pod comprises shaking each respective pod such that the at least one ingredient sloshes in each respective pod.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein filling the plurality of pods with the at least one ingredient comprises pressurizing a headspace of the plurality of pods with a gas.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein filling the plurality of pods with the at least one ingredient comprises hermetically sealing the plurality of pods after pressurizing the headspace and prior to sterilizing the plurality of pods.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein selecting the pod of the plurality of pods using the user interface causes the selected pod to be inserted in the receptacle of the evaporator of the vending machine.

21. The method of claim 11 , wherein cooling the inserted pod comprises cooling the inserted pod from room temperature to a temperature between 17-26 degrees Fahrenheit within 2 minutes.
