Abstract

An orthopaedic knee prosthesis includes a femoral component having a condyle surface. The condyle surface is defined by one or more radii of curvatures, which are controlled to reduce or delay the onset of anterior translation of the femoral component relative to a tibial bearing.

Claims (36)

1. An orthopaedic knee prosthesis comprising:

a femoral component having a single condyle having a condyle surface curved in the sagittal plane; and

a tibial bearing having an upper surface having a single bearing surface configured to articulate with the condyle surface of the single condyle of the femoral component,

wherein the condyle surface (i) contacts the single bearing surface at a first contact point on the condyle surface at a first degree of flexion degrees, (ii) contacts the single bearing surface at a second contact point on the condyle surface at a second degree of flexion greater than the first degree of flexion and less than about 30 degrees, and (iii) contacts the single bearing surface at a third contact point on the condyle surface greater than the second degree of flexion and less than about 75 degrees of flexion,

wherein (i) the condyle surface in the sagittal plane has a first radius of curvature at the first contact point, a second radius of curvature at the second contact point, and a third radius of curvature at the third contact point and (ii) a curved surface section defined between the second contact point and the third contact point that is defined by a plurality of radii having different lengths such that the curved surface section has a non-constant radius of curvature.

2. The orthopaedic knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the single condyle comprises a medial condyle and the femoral component is devoid of a lateral condyle, and

and wherein the single bearing surface comprises a medial bearing surface and the upper surface of the tibial bearing is devoid of a lateral bearing surface.

3. The orthopaedic knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the single condyle comprises a lateral condyle and the femoral component is devoid of a medial condyle, and

and wherein the single bearing surface comprises a lateral bearing surface and the upper surface of the tibial bearing is devoid of a medial bearing surface.

4. The orthopaedic knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein each radius of the plurality of radii has a different length from each other such that the radius of curvature of the curved surface section changes from the second contact point to the third contact point.

5. The orthopaedic knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of radii defining the curved surface section include increasing radii.

6. The orthopaedic knee prosthesis of claim 5 , wherein the length of each radius of the plurality of radii increases in length along the curved surface section from the second contact point to the third contact point.

7. The orthopaedic knee prosthesis of claim 5 , wherein the second radius of curvature is greater than the first radius of curvature and the third radius of curvature is greater than each of the first radius of curvature and the second radius of curvature.

8. The orthopaedic knee prosthesis of claim 7 , wherein each of the second radius of curvature and the third radius of curvature is greater than first radius of curvature by at least 0.5 millimeters.

9. The orthopaedic knee prosthesis of claim 7 , wherein the third radius of curvature is greater than the second radius of curvature by at least 0.5 millimeters.

10. The orthopaedic knee prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein

the condyle surface contacts the single bearing surface at a fourth contact point on the condyle surface at a fourth degree of flexion greater than the third degree of flexion,

the condyle surface in the sagittal plane has a fourth radius of curvature at the fourth contact point, and

the fourth radius of curvature is less than the second radius of curvature.

11. An orthopaedic knee prosthesis comprising:

a uni-compartmental femoral component having a single condyle having a condyle surface curved in the sagittal plane;

and a uni-compartmental tibial bearing having an upper surface having a single bearing surface configured to articulate with the condyle surface of the single condyle of the uni-compartmental femoral component,

wherein the condyle surface (i) contacts the single bearing surface at a first contact point on the condyle surface at a first degree of flexion degrees, (ii) contacts the single bearing surface at a second contact point on the condyle surface at a second degree of flexion greater than the first degree of flexion, and (iii) contacts the single bearing surface at a third contact point on the condyle surface greater than the second degree of flexion and less than about 110 degrees of flexion,

wherein (i) the condyle surface in the sagittal plane has a first radius of curvature at the first contact point, a second radius of curvature at the second contact point, and a third radius of curvature at the third contact point and (ii) a curved surface section defined between the second contact point and the third contact point is defined by a plurality of radii having different lengths such that the curved surface section has a non-constant radius of curvature.

12. The orthopaedic knee prosthesis of claim 11 , wherein the single condyle is a medial condyle and the single bearing surface is a medial bearing surface.

13. The orthopaedic knee prosthesis of claim 11 , wherein the single condyle is a lateral condyle and the single bearing surface is a lateral bearing surface.

14. The orthopaedic knee prosthesis of claim 11 , wherein each radius of the plurality of radii has a different length from each other such that the radius of curvature of the curved surface section changes from the second contact point to the third contact point.

15. The orthopaedic knee prosthesis of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of radii defining the curved surface section include increasing radii.

16. The orthopaedic knee prosthesis of claim 15 , wherein the length of each radius of the plurality of radii increases in length along the curved surface section from the second contact point to the third contact point.

17. The orthopaedic knee prosthesis of claim 15 , wherein the second radius of curvature is greater than the first radius of curvature and the third radius of curvature is greater than each of the first radius of curvature and the second radius of curvature.

18. The orthopaedic knee prosthesis of claim 17 , wherein each of the second radius of curvature and the third radius of curvature is greater than first radius of curvature by at least 0.5 millimeters.

19. The orthopaedic knee prosthesis of claim 17 , wherein the third radius of curvature is greater than the second radius of curvature by at least 0.5 millimeters.

20. The orthopaedic knee prosthesis of claim 11 , wherein

the condyle surface contacts the single bearing surface at a fourth contact point on the condyle surface at a fourth degree of flexion greater than the third degree of flexion,

the condyle surface in the sagittal plane has a fourth radius of curvature at the fourth contact point, and

the fourth radius of curvature is less than the second radius of curvature.
