Abstract

A coating composition includes: (i) a film-forming resin; (ii) an infrared reflective pigment; and (iii) an infrared fluorescent pigment or dye different from the infrared reflective pigment. A multi-layer coating including the coating composition, and a substrate at least partially coated with the coating composition is also disclosed. A method of detecting an article at least partially coated with the coating composition is also disclosed.

Claims (30)

1. A method of detecting an object in a path of an autonomous vehicle, comprising:

directing infrared electromagnetic radiation from a radiation source mounted on an autonomous vehicle at an object at least partially coated with a coating composition comprising: (i) a film-forming resin, (ii) an infrared reflective pigment, and (iii) an infrared fluorescent pigment or dye different from the infrared fluorescent pigment; and

detecting, by a radiation sensor mounted on the autonomous vehicle, reflected and fluoresced radiation emitted by the infrared reflective pigment and the infrared fluorescent pigment in response to excitation by incident radiation from the infrared electromagnetic radiation.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to detecting the reflected and fluoresced radiation, determining a proximity of the autonomous vehicle to the coated object.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

in response to determining the proximity of the autonomous vehicle to the coated object, causing the autonomous vehicle to react without human intervention by at least one of braking, accelerating, or swerving.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the coated object is a second vehicle, a road, a road barrier, signage, and/or an object in a path of the autonomous vehicle.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the infrared fluorescent pigment or dye absorbs incident electromagnetic radiation from the radiation source at a first wavelength and fluoresces electromagnetic radiation at a second wavelength when excited by the incident electromagnetic radiation from the radiation source at the first wavelength.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the second wavelength corresponds to a lower energy wavelength compared to the first wavelength.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the second wavelength is in the near-infrared region of from 700 nm to 2500 nm.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the infrared reflective pigment reflects incident electromagnetic radiation from the radiation source at a first wavelength, wherein the first wavelength is in the near-infrared region of from 700 nm to 2500 nm.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the infrared reflective pigment reflects at a first wavelength and the infrared fluorescent pigment or dye fluoresces at a second wavelength.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein a balance of the coating composition is transparent at the first and second wavelengths.

11. An autonomous vehicle guidance system, comprising:

an autonomous vehicle;

a radiation source mounted on the autonomous vehicle, the radiation source directing infrared electromagnetic radiation at an object at least partially coated with a coating composition comprising: (i) a film-forming resin, (ii) an infrared reflective pigment, and (iii) an infrared fluorescent pigment or dye different from the infrared fluorescent pigment; and

a radiation sensor mounted on the autonomous vehicle detecting reflected and fluoresced radiation emitted by the infrared reflective pigment and the infrared fluorescent pigment in response to excitation by incident radiation from the infrared electromagnetic radiation.

12. The autonomous vehicle guidance system of claim 11 , wherein the autonomous vehicle is configured to determine a proximity of the autonomous vehicle to the coated object in response to detecting the reflected and fluoresced radiation.

13. The autonomous vehicle guidance system of claim 12 , wherein the autonomous vehicle is configured to react without human intervention by at least one of braking, accelerating, or swerving in response to determining the proximity of the autonomous vehicle to the coated object.

14. The autonomous vehicle guidance system of claim 11 , wherein the coated object is a second vehicle, a road, a road barrier, signage, and/or an object in a path of the autonomous vehicle.

15. The autonomous vehicle guidance system of claim 11 , wherein the infrared fluorescent pigment or dye absorbs incident electromagnetic radiation from the radiation source at a first wavelength and fluoresces electromagnetic radiation at a second wavelength when excited by the incident electromagnetic radiation from the radiation source at the first wavelength.

16. The autonomous vehicle guidance system of claim 15 , wherein the second wavelength corresponds to a lower energy wavelength compared to the first wavelength.

17. The autonomous vehicle guidance system of claim 15 , wherein the second wavelength is in the near-infrared region of from 700 nm to 2500 nm.

18. The autonomous guidance vehicle system of claim 11 , wherein the infrared reflective pigment reflects incident electromagnetic radiation from the radiation source at a first wavelength, wherein the first wavelength is in the near-infrared region of from 700 nm to 2500 nm.

19. The autonomous vehicle guidance system of claim 11 , wherein the infrared reflective pigment reflects at a first wavelength and the infrared fluorescent pigment or dye fluoresces at a second wavelength.

20. A coated object in a path of an autonomous vehicle, comprising:

an object in a path of an autonomous vehicle and at least partially coated with a coating composition comprising: (i) a film-forming resin, (ii) an infrared reflective pigment, and (iii) an infrared fluorescent pigment or dye different from the infrared fluorescent pigment,

wherein the coated object is contacted with infrared electromagnetic radiation directed from a radiation source mounted on the autonomous vehicle,

wherein the infrared reflective pigment and the infrared fluorescent pigment or dye reflect and fluoresce, respectively, at least a portion of the infrared electromagnetic radiation directed from the radiation source in a direction of a radiation detector mounted on the autonomous vehicle.
