Abstract

Described herein are methods for beam station delivery of radiation treatment, where the patient platform is moved to a series of discrete patient platform locations or beam stations that are determined during treatment planning, stopped at each of these locations while the radiation source rotates about the patient delivering radiation to the target regions that intersect the radiation beam path, and then moving to the next location after the prescribed dose of radiation (e.g., in accordance with a calculated fluence map) for that location has been delivered to the patient.

Claims (31)

1. A method for converting a treatment plan for helical delivery to a treatment plan for beam station delivery, the method comprising:

discretizing a planned fluence map of a helical treatment plan into fluence maps for a plurality of sample points along a longitudinal axis of patient platform motion;

mapping each sample point to a beam station of a set of beam stations;

assigning the fluence map of each sample point to its mapped beam station; and

generating a beam station fluence map for each beam station by combining the fluence maps of the sample points that have been assigned to the beam station.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sample points are patient platform positions along an IEC-Y axis.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising calculating a radiation dose to be delivered to a target region by combining the beam station fluence maps over the beam stations in the set of beam stations.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising comparing the calculated radiation dose with a prescribed radiation dose to determine a dose difference between the calculated radiation dose and the prescribed radiation dose to the target region.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising adjusting a beam station fluence map by an adjustment factor based on the dose difference.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein discretizing the planned fluence map of the helical treatment plan comprises sectioning the planned fluence map into helical segments along the longitudinal axis.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein a spacing between the plurality of sample points is a width of the helical segments.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein mapping each sample point to a beam station comprises mapping one or more helical segments to a beam station.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein a helical segment is mapped to a beam station based on a location of the helical segment on the longitudinal axis.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein a spacing between the plurality of sample points is selected based on characteristics of the helical treatment plan.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein a spacing between the plurality of sample points is the same as a spacing between beam stations in the set of beam stations.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein multiple sample points map to a single beam station.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein a sample point is mapped to a beam station based on a location of the sample point on the longitudinal axis.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising segmenting the beam station fluence map into instructions for a therapeutic radiation source and a multi-leaf collimator disposed in a beam path of the therapeutic radiation source.

15. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting the generated beam station fluence maps to a radiation therapy system.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising segmenting the beam station fluence map into instructions for a therapeutic radiation source and a multi-leaf collimator disposed in a beam path of the therapeutic radiation source during a treatment session.

17. The method of claim 1 , further comprising adjusting the beam station fluence maps using imaging data acquired during a treatment session.

18. A radiation therapy system comprising:

a gantry rotatable about a longitudinal axis;

a therapeutic radiation source mounted on the gantry and configured to emit radiation according to a fluence map;

a patient platform movable to a plurality of beam stations at predetermined locations; and

a controller in communication with the gantry, the therapeutic radiation source, and the patient platform, the controller configured to discretize a planned fluence map of a helical treatment plan into fluence maps for a plurality of sample points along the longitudinal axis, map each sample point to a beam station, assign the fluence map of each sample point to its mapped beam station, and a generate beam station fluence map for each beam station by combining the fluence maps of the sample points that have been assigned to the beam station.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the controller is further configured to calculate a radiation dose to be delivered to a target region by combining the beam station fluence maps of the plurality of beam stations, and to compare the calculated radiation dose with a prescribed radiation dose to determine a dose difference between the calculated radiation dose and the prescribed radiation dose to the target region.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the controller is configured to adjust a beam station fluence map based on the determined dose difference.

21. The system of claim 18 , wherein the radiation therapy system comprises an imaging system, and the controller is configured to adjust a beam station fluence map using imaging data acquired by the imaging system.

22. The system of claim 18 , wherein the controller is configured to segment the beam station fluence map into instructions for the therapeutic radiation source and a multi-leaf collimator disposed in a beam path of the therapeutic radiation source.

23. The system of claim 18 , wherein the predetermined locations are locations along the longitudinal axis.
