Abstract

Method and apparatus for optimizing analyte sensor calibration including receiving a current blood glucose measurement, retrieving a time information for an upcoming scheduled calibration event for calibrating an analyte sensor, determining temporal proximity between the current blood glucose measurement and the retrieved time information for the upcoming calibration event, initiating a calibration routine to calibrate the analyte sensor when the determined temporal proximity is within a predetermined time period, and overriding the upcoming scheduled calibration event using the current blood glucose measurement are provided.

Claims (38)

1. A continuous glucose monitoring system, comprising:

a glucose sensor having a first portion configured to be positioned through a user's skin and in contact with an interstitial fluid of a user and a second portion configured to remain above the user's skin;

a non-transitory memory; and

at least one processor communicatively coupled to the non-transitory memory and the glucose sensor and configured to:

store a calibration schedule in the non-transitory memory, wherein the calibration schedule comprises a plurality of scheduled calibration events for receiving scheduled blood glucose measurements to calibrate the glucose sensor;

receive an unscheduled blood glucose measurement;

determine the unscheduled blood glucose measurement is within a predetermined time period from an upcoming scheduled calibration event;

validate one or more calibration condition parameters associated with calibration of the continuous glucose monitoring system;

upon validation of the one or more calibration condition parameters, initiate an unscheduled calibration event and calibrate the glucose sensor using the unscheduled blood glucose measurement; and

update the calibration schedule to replace the upcoming scheduled calibration event with the unscheduled calibration event.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein validating the one or more calibration condition parameters comprises determining if the unscheduled blood glucose measurement is within a range.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the range is between 40 mg/dL and 400 mg/dL.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more calibration condition parameters comprises a glucose rate of change.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein validating the one or more calibration condition parameters comprises determining if the glucose rate of change exceeds a threshold level.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more calibration condition parameters comprises a temperature associated with the system.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein validating the one or more calibration condition parameters comprises determining if the temperature is within a range.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more calibration condition parameters comprises a number of analyte sensor data points to perform a calibration.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein validating the one or more calibration condition parameters comprises determining if the number of analyte sensor data points to perform a calibration is above a threshold.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to determine if the unscheduled calibration event successfully calibrated the glucose sensor; and provide a notification if the unscheduled calibration event failed.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined time period is 90 minutes.

12. A method comprising:

storing, by a least one processor, a calibration schedule, wherein the calibration schedule comprises a plurality of scheduled calibration events for receiving scheduled blood glucose measurements to calibrate a glucose sensor;

receiving, by the at least one processor, an unscheduled blood glucose measurement;

determining, by the at least one processor, the unscheduled blood glucose measurement is within a predetermined time period from an upcoming scheduled calibration event;

validating, by the at least one processor, one or more calibration condition parameters associated with calibration of a continuous glucose monitoring system;

initiating, by the at least one processor and upon validation of the one or more calibration condition parameters, an unscheduled calibration event;

calibrating, by the at least one processor, a glucose sensor using the unscheduled blood glucose measurement; and

updating, by the at least one processor, the retrieved calibration schedule to replace the upcoming scheduled calibration event with the unscheduled calibration event.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein validating the one or more calibration condition parameters comprises determining if the unscheduled blood glucose measurement is within a range.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the range is between 40 mg/dL and 400 mg/dL.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the one or more calibration condition parameters comprises a glucose rate of change.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein validating the one or more calibration condition parameters comprises determining if the glucose rate of change exceeds a threshold level.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the one or more calibration condition parameters comprises a temperature associated with the system.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein validating the one or more calibration condition parameters comprises determining if the temperature is within a range.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the one or more calibration condition parameters comprises a number of analyte sensor data points to perform a calibration.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein validating the one or more calibration condition parameters comprises determining if the number of analyte sensor data points to perform a calibration is above a threshold.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to determine if the unscheduled calibration event successfully calibrated the glucose sensor; and provide a notification if the unscheduled calibration event failed.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the predetermined time period is 90 minutes.
