Abstract

Described herein are methods and apparatuses for detecting an obstructive material within a lumen of an aspiration catheter using one or more sensors with the lumen of the suction catheter to prevent excess blood loss and improve operation of the apparatus.

Claims (36)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a flexible elongate catheter having a suction lumen extending therethrough;

an aspiration opening into the suction lumen at a distal end region of the flexible elongate body;

a first electrical impedance sensor pair comprising two electrodes on opposite sides of a rim of the aspiration opening; and

a controller coupled to the first electrical impedance sensor pair, and configured to apply an alternating current between the two electrodes of the first electrical impedance sensor pair, further wherein the controller comprises circuitry that is configured to detect a material at the distal end region and to confirm that the material is a clot material that is distinct from blood and vessel wall based on electrical impedance signals from the first electrical impedance sensor pair, and to cause the apparatus to emit an output when the material is detected and confirmed to be clot material.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to apply alternating current at 50 kHz or greater.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to apply the alternating current after beginning suction through the suction lumen.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a current generator configured to apply the alternating current.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the aspiration opening is on a tapered side of the distal end region of the flexible elongate catheter.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an electrode proximal to the aspiration opening.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the electrode proximal to the aspiration opening extends at least partially radially around the suction lumen.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the two electrodes of the first electrical impedance sensor pair are positioned at a 3 o'clock and a 9 o'clock position around the aspiration opening.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the two electrodes of the first electrical impedance sensor pair are recessed within the rim.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the two electrodes of the first electrical impedance sensor pair extend proud, or are flush with, the rim.

11. An apparatus comprising:

a flexible elongate catheter having a suction lumen extending therethrough;

an aspiration opening into the suction lumen at a distal end region of the flexible elongate body;

a first electrode and a second electrode on opposite sides of a rim of the aspiration opening;

a controller coupled to the first electrode and the second electrode, and configured to apply an alternating current between the first and second electrodes, further wherein the controller comprises circuitry including one or more processors configured to detect a material in contact with the distal end region, and to confirm that the material is a clot material that is distinct from blood and vessel wall, based on electrical impedance signals from the first electrode and the second electrode, wherein the circuitry is further configured to cause the apparatus to emit an output when clot material is confirmed.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising an electrode is within the suction lumen.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the electrode within the suction lumen extends at least partially radially around the suction lumen.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the first electrode and the second electrode are positioned at a 3 o'clock position and a 9 o'clock position around the rim of the aspiration opening.

15. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the first electrode and the second electrode are recessed into the rim of the aspiration opening.

16. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the first electrode and the second electrode extend proud, or are flush with, the rim of the aspiration opening.

17. An apparatus comprising:

a flexible elongate catheter having a suction lumen extending therethrough;

an aspiration opening into the suction lumen at a lateral side of a tapered portion of a distal end region of the flexible elongate body;

a first pair of sensing electrodes arranged on a rim of the aspiration opening transverse to a long axis of the flexible elongate catheter on the rim of the aspiration opening;

a third electrode distal to the aspiration opening;

a fourth electrode proximal to the first pair of sensing electrodes; and

a controller coupled to the first pair of sensing electrodes and the third electrode and the fourth electrode and configured to detect a clot material at the distal end region and to confirm that the clot material is distinct from blood and vessel wall based on electrical impedance signals from the first pair of sensing electrodes and the third and fourth electrodes and to emit an output when clot material is confirmed.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the fourth electrode is within the suction lumen.

19. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the fourth electrode extends at least partially radially around the suction lumen.

20. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the first pair of sensing electrodes are positioned radially around the aspiration opening at a 3 o'clock position and a 9 o'clock position.

21. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the first pair of sensing electrodes are recessed into the rim.

22. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the first pair of sensing electrodes extend proud, or are flush with, the rim.
