Methods for removing a blood clot material
Described here are methods and apparatuses for removing a clot material from a patient. For example, an apparatus as described herein may include a flexible elongate body having a suction lumen, a first pair of sensors (e.g., electrodes), and a controller configured to identify a clot material based on signals from the first pair of sensors.
1. A method of removing a blood clot material, the method comprising:
advancing a flexible elongate catheter though a blood vessel, wherein the flexible elongate catheter comprises a distal end region having an aspiration opening therein;
sensing an electrical signal between at least two sensors in the distal end region of the flexible elongate catheter to determine if the aspiration opening is within proximity to a blood clot based on the electrical signal; and
applying suction when the electrical signal indicates that the aspiration opening is within proximity to the blood clot.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein advancing comprises advancing without applying negative pressure from the flexible elongate catheter.
3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising emitting an alert indicating if the aspiration opening is within proximity to the blood clot.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein sensing the electrical signal comprises applying alternating signal having a frequency of between about 1 kHz and 1 MHz.
5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the alternating signal has a frequency of between about 10 kHz and 100 kHz.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of sensing is performed while advancing the flexible elongate catheter.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining if the aspiration opening is within proximity to the blood clot is based on both an impedance measurement based on the electrical signal from the at least two sensors and a second sensor positioned at the distal end region of the flexible elongate catheter.
8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising adjusting suction through the flexible elongate catheter based on the electrical signal measured from the at least two sensors.
9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising stopping suction when the electrical signal measured from the at least two sensors indicates that the aspiration opening is no longer within proximity to the blood clot.
10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aspiration opening at the distal end region is on a tapered side of the distal end region of the flexible elongate catheter.
11. A method of removing a blood clot material, the method comprising:
positioning a flexible elongate catheter within a blood vessel, wherein the flexible elongate catheter comprises an aspiration opening on a tapered side of a distal end region and two or more electrodes on the distal end region;
sensing an electrical signal between the two or more electrodes while positioning the flexible elongate catheter, to determine if the aspiration opening is within proximity to a blood clot based on the electrical signal from the two or more electrodes; and
applying suction when the electrical signal indicates that the aspiration opening is within proximity to blood clot.
12. The method of claim 11 , wherein advancing comprises positioning without applying negative pressure within the flexible elongate catheter.
13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising emitting an alert indicating if the aspiration opening is within proximity to blood clot.
14. The method of claim 11 , wherein sensing the electrical signal comprises applying alternating current having a frequency of between about 1 kHz and 1 MHz.
15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the alternating current has a frequency of between about 10 kHz and 100 kHz.
16. The method of claim 11 , wherein determining if the aspiration opening is within proximity to blood clot is based on both a measurement based on the electrical signal from the two or more electrodes and a second sensor positioned at the distal end region of the flexible elongate catheter.
17. The method of claim 11 , further comprising adjusting suction through the flexible elongate catheter based on the electrical signal measured from the two or more electrodes.
18. The method of claim 11 , further comprising stopping suction when the electrical signal measured from the two or more electrodes indicates that the aspiration opening is no longer within proximity to the blood clot.
19. A method of removing a blood clot material, the method comprising:
positioning a flexible elongate catheter within a blood vessel, wherein the flexible elongate catheter comprises an aspiration opening on a distal end region and at least two or more electrodes on the distal end region;
sensing an electrical signal between the two or more electrodes while positioning the flexible elongate catheter to determine if the aspiration opening is within proximity to a blood clot based on the electrical signal from the two or more electrodes; and
adjusting suction through the flexible elongate catheter based on the electrical signal measured from the two or more electrodes, wherein suction is applied when the electrical signal indicates that the aspiration opening is within proximity to the blood clot.
20. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying suction when the electrical signal indicates that the aspiration opening is within proximity to the blood clot comprises applying suction when the electrical signal indicates that the aspiration opening in contact with the blood clot.
