Abstract

Described here are methods and apparatuses for tracking a clot material within a lumen of a suction catheter. For example, an apparatus as described herein may include a flexible elongate body having a suction lumen, a first pair of electrodes within the suction lumen, a second pair of electrodes proximal to the first pair of electrodes, and a controller configured to track a clot material within the suction lumen based on signals from the first pair of electrodes and the second pair of electrodes.

Claims (44)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a flexible elongate body having a suction lumen extending therethrough;

an aspiration opening into the suction lumen at a distal end region of the flexible elongate body;

a first pair of rim electrodes positioned on opposite sides of a rim of the aspiration opening;

a first electrode proximal to the first pair of electrodes;

a second electrode distal to the aspiration opening; and

a controller coupled to the first pair of rim electrodes and to the first and second electrodes and configured to detect a clot material at the distal end region and to confirm that the clot material is distinct from blood and vessel wall based on electrical impedance signals from the first pair of electrodes and the first and second electrodes and to emit an output when clot material is detected and confirmed.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first electrode is within the suction lumen and extends at least partially radially around the suction lumen.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the first electrode comprises a ring electrode extending radially around the suction lumen.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first pair of rim electrodes are separated from each other by between 0.1 and 20 mm.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first pair of rim electrodes are positioned radially around the aspiration opening at a 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first pair of rim electrodes and the first and second electrodes comprise a quad detector.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first and second electrodes are spaced from each other along a distal-to-proximal length of the flexible elongate body.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an alternating electrical power source coupled to the first pair of rim electrodes and configured to apply a variable voltage.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to determine a rate of flow of the clot material within the suction lumen based on electrical impedance signals from the first electrode and a third electrode within the suction lumen and proximal to the first electrode.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to distinguish between clot material and vessel wall based on electrical impedance signals from the first pair of rim electrodes and the second electrode.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to modulate suction through the suction lumen based at least in part on detection of confirmed clot material.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the aspiration opening is on a tapered region of the distal end region so that the aspiration opening opens from a lateral side of the flexible elongate body.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first electrode and the second electrode form a bipolar pair of electrodes and the first pair of rim electrodes form a bipolar pair of electrodes.

14. An apparatus comprising:

a suction catheter comprising:

a flexible elongate body having a suction lumen extending therethrough;

an aspiration opening into the suction lumen at a tapered distal end region of the flexible elongate body;

a first pair of rim electrodes around a rim of the aspiration opening, positioned laterally on opposite sides of a rim of the aspiration opening;

a first electrode proximal to the first pair of rim electrodes;

a second electrode distal to the aspiration opening;

a proximal suction port in communication with the suction lumen; and

one or more connectors at a proximal end region of the flexible elongate body, wherein the one or more connectors are in electrical communication with the first pair of rim electrodes, the first electrode and the second electrode; and

a controller configured to couple to the one or more connectors and configured to detect a material at the distal end region and to confirm that the material is a clot material distinct from blood and vessel wall based on electrical impedance signals from the first pair of electrodes and the first and second electrodes and to emit an output when detecting confirmed clot material.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the first electrode is within the suction lumen and extends at least partially radially around the suction lumen.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the first electrode comprises a ring electrode extending radially around the suction lumen.

17. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the first pair of rim electrodes extend proud of the rim.

18. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the first pair of rim electrodes are positioned radially around the aspiration opening at a 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions.

19. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the first pair of rim electrodes and the first and second electrodes comprise a quad detector.

20. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the first and second electrodes are spaced apart from each other along a distal-to-proximal length of the flexible elongate body.

21. An apparatus comprising:

a flexible elongate catheter having a suction lumen extending therethrough;

an aspiration opening into the suction lumen at a lateral side of a tapered portion of a distal end region of the flexible elongate body;

a first pair of sensing electrode arranged on a rim of the aspiration opening transverse to a long axis of the flexible elongate catheter on the rim of the aspiration opening;

a second pair of sensing electrodes on either side of the aspiration opening in a proximal-to-distal line extending through a longitudinal midline of the aspiration opening, wherein a proximal electrode of the second pair of sensing electrodes is an annular electrode; and

a controller coupled to the first pair of sensing electrodes and the second pair of sensing electrodes and configured to detect a material at the distal end region and to confirm that the material is a clot material that is distinct from blood and vessel wall based on electrical impedance signals from the first pair of sensing electrodes and the second pair of sensing electrodes and to emit an output when detecting confirmed clot material.
