Abstract

An introduced autonomous aerial vehicle can include multiple cameras for capturing images of a surrounding physical environment that are utilized for motion planning by an autonomous navigation system. In some embodiments, the cameras can be integrated into one or more rotor assemblies that house powered rotors to free up space within the body of the aerial vehicle. In an example embodiment, an aerial vehicle includes multiple upward-facing cameras and multiple downward-facing cameras with overlapping fields of view to enable stereoscopic computer vision in a plurality of directions around the aerial vehicle. Similar camera arrangements can also be implemented in fixed-wing aerial vehicles.

Claims (33)

1 . A rotor assembly for an aerial vehicle, the rotor assembly comprising: a rotor housing including walls substantially surrounding an interior space; a motor arranged substantially within the interior space of the rotor housing; one or more removable rotor blades, each removable rotor blade including an attachment portion having a slot, wherein the slot is comprised of a widest circular opening portion leading to a narrower oval-shaped passage portion, and wherein the slot is shaped and/or sized based on an arrangement of the motor to force proper installation by a user; and one or more pins coupled to the motor, wherein each pin is configured to detachably couple to a removable rotor blade of the one or more removable rotor blades such that the removable rotor blade is secured in place solely by the slot and the pin, without requiring any additional fasteners, by bringing the widest portion of the slot over a head of the pin and pulling laterally to lock the removable blade in a locked position on the narrowest portion.

2 . The rotor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the slot is configured such that, when in use, a centrifugal force effect caused by a rotation of the motor keeps the removable rotor blade secured in the locked position.

3 . The rotor assembly of claim 2 , wherein the pin is configured such that, when in use, a centrifugal force effect caused by the rotation of the motor keeps the removable rotor blade secured in the locked position.

4 . The rotor assembly of claim 1 , further comprising:

an image capture device arranged substantially within the interior space of the rotor housing and oriented so as to capture images of a physical environment surrounding the rotor assembly, while in use.

The rotor assembly of claim 4 , wherein the motor is arranged substantially within the interior space proximate to a first end of the rotor housing and wherein the image capture device is arranged substantially in the interior space proximate to a second end of the rotor housing, the second end of the rotor housing opposite the first end of the rotor housing.

6 . A rotor assembly for an aerial vehicle, the rotor assembly comprising:

a rotor housing including walls substantially surrounding an interior space;

a motor arranged substantially within the interior space of the rotor housing;

one or more removable rotor blades, each removable rotor blade including a locking feature on an innermost end; and

a central mounting socket coupled to the motor and configured to detachably couple to at least one removable rotor blade of the one or more removable rotor blades such that the at least one removable rotor blade is secured in place solely by lowering the at least one removable rotor blade axially into the central mounting socket and pulling radially outward to lock the at least one removable rotor blade in a locked position without requiring any additional fasteners.

The rotor assembly of claim 6 , wherein in the locked position, the removable rotor blade is aligned accurately by an interface with the central mounting socket in a radially engaged connection that correctly seats the rotor blade in the central mounting socket when a centrifugal loading force is imposed thereon.

8 . The rotor assembly of claim 6 , wherein the locking feature is shaped and/or sized based on an arrangement of the motor to force proper installation by a user.

9 . The rotor assembly of claim 6 , wherein the locking feature is configured such that, when in use, a centrifugal force effect caused by a rotation of the motor keeps the removable rotor blade secured in the locked position.

10 . The rotor assembly of claim 9 , wherein the central mounting socket is configured such that, when in use, a centrifugal force effect caused by the rotation of the motor keeps the removable rotor blade secured in the locked position.

11 . The rotor assembly of claim 6 , further comprising:

an image capture device arranged substantially within the interior space of the rotor housing and oriented so as to capture images of a physical environment surrounding the rotor assembly, while in use.

The rotor assembly of claim 11 , wherein the motor is arranged substantially within the interior space proximate to a first end of the rotor housing and wherein the image capture device is arranged substantially in the interior space proximate to a second end of the rotor housing, the second end of the rotor housing opposite the first end of the rotor housing.

The rotor assembly of claim 6 , wherein the central mounting socket includes a spring driven member that is configured to pop up when the removable rotor blade is properly seated in the locked position in order to prevent the removable rotor blade from moving from the locked position to an unlocked position.

14 . The rotor assembly of claim 13 , wherein to remove the removable rotor blade, the spring driven member is depressible allowing the removable rotor blade to be pushed inward until the removable rotor blade disengages and lifted axially.

15 . An aerial vehicle comprising:

a central body extending along a longitudinal axis from a forward end to an aft end, the central body having a port side and a starboard side on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis;

multiple rotor arms each having a proximal end coupled to the central body;

multiple rotor assemblies each arranged at a distal end of a rotor arm of the multiple rotor arms, the multiple rotor assemblies configured to provide propulsion for the aerial vehicle; and

multiple image capture devices including at least one image capture device arranged along a surface of the aerial vehicle;

wherein each rotor assembly includes:

a motor arranged;

one or more removable rotor blades, each removable rotor blade including an attachment portion having a slot; and

one or more pins coupled to the motor, each pin configured to detachably couple to a removable rotor blade of the one or more removable rotor blades such that the removable rotor blade is secured in place solely by the slot and the pin, without requiring any additional fasteners, by bringing a widest portion of the slot over a head of the pin and pulling laterally to lock the removable blade in a locked position on a narrowest portion.

16 . The aerial vehicle of claim 15 , wherein the slot is shaped and/or sized based on an arrangement of the motor to force proper installation by a user.

17 . The aerial vehicle of claim 15 , wherein the slot configured such that, when in use, a centrifugal force effect caused by a rotation of the motor keeps the removable rotor blade secured in the locked position.

18 . The aerial vehicle of claim 15 , wherein the pin is configured such that, when in use, a centrifugal force effect caused by the rotation of the motor keeps the removable rotor blade secured in the locked position.

19 . The aerial vehicle of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the multiple image capture devices is arranged substantially within the interior space of a rotor housing and oriented so as to capture images of a physical environment surrounding the rotor assembly, while in use.
