Abstract

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) includes a central body having a plurality of sides and a plurality of arms extendable from the central body. Each arm of the plurality of arms comprises a plurality of foldable sections. Each arm of the plurality of arms is configured to transform between a flight configuration and a compact configuration. When an arm is in the flight configuration, the plurality of foldable sections of the arm are extended away from the central body. When an arm is in the compact configuration, the plurality of foldable sections of the arm are folded toward a corresponding side of the central body such that the plurality of foldable sections are substantially parallel to one another.

a central body having a plurality of sides; and

a plurality of arms extendable from the central body, wherein each arm of the plurality of arms comprises a plurality of foldable sections and holds a set of rotor blades via a rotor shaft,

wherein each arm of the plurality of arms is configured to transform between:

a flight configuration in which the plurality of foldable sections in the each arm are extended away from the central body, and

a compact configuration in which the plurality of foldable sections in the each arm are folded toward a corresponding side of the central body such that the plurality of foldable sections and the corresponding set of rotor blades are substantially parallel to one another and substantially parallel to the corresponding side of the central body and the corresponding rotor shaft is arranged substantially at a center of the corresponding side of the central body.

2. The UAV of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of arms are configured to fold toward the corresponding sides of the central body in a same clockwise or counter-clockwise direction relative to the central body.

3. The UAV of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of foldable sections in each arm are collinear to one another in the flight configuration and are at a same height relative to the central body in the compact configuration.

4. The UAV of claim 1 , wherein each arm comprises a proximal end and a distal end, and the plurality of foldable sections are movably connected to one another between the proximal end and the distal end.

5. The UAV of claim 4 , wherein two neighboring foldable sections of the each arm are:

rotatably connected to one another via at least one hinge; or

slidably connected to one another with one of the two neighboring foldable sections configured to partially or entirely telescope into another one of the two neighboring foldable sections.

6. The UAV of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of foldable sections are configured to rotate relative to one another using an actuation mechanism, the actuation mechanism comprising at least one of a cable, a chain, a belt, or a spring.

7. The UAV of claim 4 , wherein the proximal end of each arm is movably connected to the central body via one or more actuators.

8. The UAV of claim 4 , wherein a length of a foldable section including the proximal end is greater than a length of a foldable section including the distal end.

9. The UAV of claim 8 , wherein the length of the foldable section including the proximal end is substantially twice the length of the foldable section including the distal end.

10. The UAV of claim 4 , wherein a length of a foldable section including the proximal end is substantially equal to or less than a length of the corresponding side of the central body or is substantially equal to a spread length of a propeller.

11. The UAV of claim 4 , wherein each arm of the plurality of arms is configured to rotatably connect to the central body.

12. The UAV of claim 11 , wherein a stopper is arranged on each arm and a mating section configured to mate with the stopper is arranged on the central body.

13. The UAV of claim 11 , wherein each arm is configured to pivotally couple with the central body via a shaft parallel to a yaw axis of the UAV.

14. The UAV of claim 1 , wherein each arm of the plurality of arms is configured to extend from the central body by one or more actuators.

15. The UAV of claim 14 , wherein:

the each arm is configured to connect to each one of the one or more actuators via a linkage mechanism; and

the each one of the one or more actuators is configured to actuate the linkage mechanism for securing the arm between:

a first dead center position in the flight configuration, the first dead center position corresponding to a first angle formed by two connecting bars in the linkage mechanism relative to one another in the flight configuration, and

a second dead center position in the compact configuration, the second dead center position corresponding to a second angle formed by the two connecting bars relative to one another in the compact configuration.

16. The UAV of claim 1 , wherein each arm is configured to support one or more propulsion units carrying one or more rotor blades, and a guiding member is disposed on at least one of the plurality of foldable sections for guiding rotation of the one or more rotor blades.

17. The UAV of claim 16 , wherein the guiding member is configured to guide rotation of the one or more rotor blades as the each arm transfers from the flight configuration to the compact configuration, such that the one or more rotor blades are substantially parallel to the plurality of foldable sections in the compact configuration.

18. The UAV of claim 1 , wherein at least one foldable section of one of the plurality of arms comprises a hollow cavity along a longitudinal axis of the at least one foldable section, such that another foldable section of the one of the plurality of arms movably connected to the at least one foldable section is:

received in the hollow cavity when the one of the plurality of arms is in the compact configuration, and

extended out of the hollow cavity when the one of the plurality of arms is in the flight configuration.

19. The UAV of claim 1 , wherein a hollow cavity is arranged at each side of the central body such that each arm is:

received in the hollow cavity in the compact configuration, and

extended out of the hollow cavity in the flight configuration.

20. A method for assembling an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), comprising:
