Abstract

A base station is disclosed for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The base station includes: a metallic enclosure; a first electronics module; a second electronics module; and a third electronics module, wherein the first electronics module, the second electronics module, and the third electronics module are each configured for individual removal from the metallic enclosure. The metallic enclosure is configured to receive the UAV and includes a front end having a front door and a rear end having a rear door. The rear door is located adjacent to the first electronics module and includes a metallic panel that is positioned in correspondence with the first electronics module so as to create a Faraday cage for the first electronics module and thereby reduce electromagnetic emissions from the base station.

5. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the first electronics module includes:

a main heat sink; and

an auxiliary heat sink connected to the main heat sink such that the main heat sink defines a plurality of side walls collectively describing a perimeter of the first electronics module and the auxiliary heat sink defines an end wall of the first electronics module.

6. The base station of claim 5 , wherein the auxiliary heat sink includes one or more diffusers configured to increase thermal energy distribution.

7. The base station of claim 5 , wherein the first electronics module further includes:

a logic board supported by the main heat sink such that the logic board is located between the main heat sink and the auxiliary heat sink;

a second PCBA supported by the main heat sink; and

an interface member located between the main heat sink and the second PCBA.

8. The base station of claim 7 , wherein the main heat sink defines a cavity configured to receive the logic board.

9. The base station of claim 7 , wherein the interface member includes:

at least one thermally conductive section configured to facilitate thermal energy transfer between the second PCBA and the main heat sink; and

at least one electrically conductive section configured to electrically ground the second PCBA.

10. The base station of claim 9 , wherein the at least one electrically conductive section includes an adhesive to connect the second PCBA to the main heat sink.

11. A base station for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), the base station comprising:

an enclosure including:

a cradle configured for docking with the UAV and movable in relation to the enclosure via a slide mechanism;

a first electronics module removably connected to the outer housing at the rear end of the enclosure, wherein the first electronics module is positioned within a window defined by the outer housing to facilitate access thereto and is configured to facilitate data processing and control of the base station, wherein the first electronics module includes:

a main heat sink providing a first housing component;

an auxiliary heat sink directly connected to the main heat sink and providing a second housing component; and

a printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) supported by the main heat sink such that the PCBA is positioned between the main heat sink and the auxiliary heat sink; and

an air circulation module connected to the rear end of the enclosure and positioned about the first electronics module to facilitate cooling thereof, wherein the air circulation module includes:

ducting configured to direct air across the first electronics module, wherein the ducting defines a chamber with an inner contour mirroring an outer contour defined by the auxiliary heat sink such that the auxiliary heat sink is positioned within the chamber; and

a fan connected to the ducting and configured to draw air therethrough.

12. The base station of claim 11 , further comprising:

a second electronics module removably connected to a roof section of the inner housing and configured to facilitate opening and closure of the enclosure; and
