Abstract

A system and method for providing payments is disclosed. A method can include establishing a wireless link between a mobile device and a merchant device. After an instruction is displayed on the mobile device, a combination of a first type of input and a second type of input are received on the mobile device, first type of input including at least one button press of a physical button and the second type of input received from a user to confirm a payment for the purchase. Based on the inputs, payment data is retrieved from a memory of the mobile device. The method includes receiving the payment data at the merchant device to make the purchase, wherein receiving the payment data, via the wireless link, at the merchant device to make the purchase is performed according to a protocol for communicating the payment data to the merchant device.

Claims (16)

1. A merchant device comprising:

a processor; and

a computer-readable storage device storing instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

establishing a communication between the merchant device and a user device via a wireless link between the user device and the merchant device, the communication being associated with a potential purchase and being initiated in connection with the potential purchase; and

receiving, via the wireless link, user payment data to make the potential purchase, wherein the user payment data is obtained based on: (1) initiating, without opening by a user of a payment application on the user device by interacting with an object representing the payment application, a payment process; (2) retrieving, based on the communication via the wireless link, the user payment data from a memory of the user device; (3) providing, as part of the payment process and based on the communication, an indication on a display of the user device regarding a status of the payment process; and (4) transmitting, according to a protocol for communicating the user payment data to the merchant device via the wireless link, the user payment data to the merchant device.

2. The merchant device of claim 1 , wherein the indication further instructs the user to click twice on a physical button on the user device.

3. The merchant device of claim 1 , wherein the user payment data is obtained further based on the user device receiving motion input as user data from the user and performing pattern recognition on the user data.

4. The merchant device of claim 1 , wherein the user device is programmed to interpret two clicks on a physical button on the user device as an indication of a user intent to continue with a payment process.

5. The merchant device of claim 1 , wherein the user device further receives motion input from the user as part of a security measure to prevent unauthorized purchases.

6. The merchant device of claim 5 , wherein the user device further receives at least one button click on a physical button from the user and receives the motion input from the user independent of the user manually opening up the payment application.

7. The merchant device of claim 3 , wherein receiving the user data and performing pattern recognition on the user data to confirm a user intent to complete a payment process does not require any interaction by the user with a graphical display of the user device.

8. A method comprising:

establishing, via a merchant device, a communication between the merchant device and a user device via a wireless link between the user device and the merchant device, the communication being associated with a potential purchase and being initiated in connection with the potential purchase; and

receiving, at the merchant device and via the wireless link, user payment data to make the potential purchase, wherein the user payment data is obtained based on: (1) initiating, without opening by a user of a payment application on the user device by interacting with an object representing the payment application, a payment process; (2) retrieving, based on the communication, the user payment data from a memory of the user device; (3) providing, as part of the payment process and based on the communication, an indication on a display of the user device regarding a status of the payment process and (4) transmitting, according to a protocol for communicating the user payment data to the merchant device via the wireless link, the user payment data to the merchant device.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein additional input from the user is received at the user device and comprises both motion input and user input requiring pattern recognition.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the user device providing of the indication on the display indicates that the user device is configured a temporary condition to transmit the user payment data via the wireless link as part of the payment process.
