Abstract

Systems and methods for improved geoheat harvesting enhancements are presented in which a wellbore contains a closed loop geoheat harvesting system that is thermally coupled to a hot and dry rock formation via thermal reach enhancement structures that extend from the wellbore into the formation and that are filled with a thermally conductive filler. Preferred configurations and/or operational parameters are determined by a model that calculates heat flow in a three-dimensional system considering time changes and the influence of the thermal reach enhanced intrinsic thermal conductivity of the rock.

Claims (24)

1. A method of installing a closed loop geoheat harvesting system, comprising:

obtaining data from a deployment location;

calculating heat flux in a model using a finite volume (3D) numerical calculation, wherein the model calculates the heat flux as a function of time at a wall of a casing of the closed loop geoheat harvesting system and/or the model further calculates heat flux from the formation into a mass flow of a working fluid in the closed loop geoheat harvesting system;

using the data in the model to determine one or more configuration and/or operational parameter for a closed loop geoheat system, wherein the model further uses determined or calculated thermal conductivity of a formation at the deployment location; and

constructing and assembling the closed loop geoheat system based on the configuration and/or operational parameters determined by the model.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data from the deployment location are obtained from a rock sample taken at the deployment location and/or a sensor at the deployment location.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data from the deployment location are selected from the group of temperature data, location data, range data, thermal conductivity data, rock composition data, and principal stress data.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determined thermal conductivity of the formation is an intrinsic thermal conductivity that is determined from a retrieved rock sample.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the calculated thermal conductivity of the formation is a modified intrinsic thermal conductivity that is based on an intrinsic thermal conductivity and a thermal reach enhancement structure within the formation, wherein the thermal reach enhancement structure comprises a thermally conductive filler having a thermal conductivity that is greater than the thermal conductivity of the formation without the thermal reach enhancement structure.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the thermal reach enhancement structure has a longitudinal geometry.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the thermal reach enhancement structure has a radial geometry.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the thermal reach enhancement structure is thermally coupled to a thermally conductive cement located between the formation containing the thermal reach enhancement structure and a casing of the closed loop geoheat system.

9. The method of claim 5 , wherein the thermally conductive filler has a k-value of at least 50 W/m ° K.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the model uses a plurality of calculations during a time interval at which a working fluid circulates in the closed loop geoheat system, wherein in each of the calculations thermophysical properties are re-computed.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the configuration and/or operational parameters are selected from the group consisting of mass flow rate of a working fluid, length of a conduit for heat transfer in the deployment location, effective width of a thermal reach enhancement structure, and effective length of a thermal reach enhancement structure.

12. A closed loop geoheat harvesting system, comprising:

a wellbore extending from a topside to a deployment location and containing a closed loop circuit for a working fluid, wherein the closed loop circuit has a casing that is thermally coupled to a wall of the wellbore via a thermally conductive cement;

wherein the walls of the wellbore further comprise a thermal enhancement structure that is thermally coupled to the thermally conductive cement and that is filled with a thermally conductive filler;

wherein the deployment location has a formation temperature of at least 250° C., wherein the working fluid has a return temperature of at least 150° C., and wherein the thermal enhancement structure has longitudinal complex multi-fractured geometry with a width of between 10 and 50 mm and;

wherein a mass flow rate for water as the working fluid is up to 40 kg/s.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the thermally conductive cement and/or the thermally conductive filler have a k-value of at least 5 W/m ° K and 50 W/m ° K, respectively.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the casing that is thermally coupled to the wall of the wellbore via the thermally conductive cement has a length of at least 3 km.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the length of the thermal enhancement structure is at least 10 m as measured from the wellbore.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the working fluid has an inlet temperature of no more than 110° C. and a flow rate of 15-25 kg/s.
