Abstract

A technique for protecting joints in pavement structures includes applying a hardener/densifier to one or more surfaces that define a joint in a pavement structure and, optionally, to portions of one or more surfaces that are located adjacent to the joint. One or more other compounds, such as hydrophobic materials, water-resistant materials, anti-scaling compounds, anti-wear compounds, multi-functional blended compositions and the like, may also be applied to the surfaces that define a joint and/or to portions of one or more surfaces that are adjacent to the joint. A seal may also be formed in a joint in a pavement structure. Joints that have been protected in accordance with teachings of this disclosure are also disclosed.

Claims (39)

1. A joint in concrete, comprising:

adjacent sections of concrete with opposed surfaces defining the joint;

a reaction product of a hardener/densifier and the concrete on the opposed surfaces; and

a coating on the opposed surfaces, the coating comprising:

a silane, a siloxane, and/or a silicone.

2. The joint of claim 1 , wherein the coating is over the reaction product of the hardener/densifier and the concrete.

3. The joint of claim 1 , wherein the coating comprises a product formed with a metal siliconate.

4. The joint of claim 1 , further comprising:

an anti-scaling compound on the opposed surfaces.

5. The joint of claim 1 , further comprising:

a seal within the joint, between the opposed surfaces of the adjacent sections of concrete.

6. The joint of claim 5 , wherein the seal comprises silicone.

7. The joint of claim 1 , further comprising:

the reaction product of the hardener/densifier and the concrete on an exposed surface of at least one section of the adjacent sections of concrete.

8. A joint in concrete, comprising:

a first section of concrete including a first outer surface and a first end surface, the first end surface defining a first joint surface;

a second section of concrete including a second outer surface and a second end surface, the second end surface defining a second joint surface;

a reaction product of a hardener/densifier and the concrete on the first joint surface and the second joint surface; and

a coating on the first joint surface and the second joint surface comprising:

a silane, a siloxane, and/or a silicone.

9. The joint of claim 8 , wherein the coating comprises a product formed with a metal siliconate.

10. The joint of claim 8 , further comprising:

an anti-scaling composition on the first joint surface and the second joint surface.

11. The joint of claim 8 , further comprising:

a seal between the first section and the second section.

12. The joint of claim 11 , wherein the seal comprises silicone.

13. The joint of claim 8 , further comprising:

the reaction product of the hardener/densifier and the concrete on at least a portion of at least one of the first outer surface and the second outer surface.

14. A joint in concrete, comprising:

a seal in the joint in the concrete;

a hardener/densifier or a seal reaction product of the hardener/densifier and the seal on the seal; and

a concrete reaction product of the hardener/densifier and the concrete on the joint, the hardener/densifier on the seal.

15. The joint of claim 14 , wherein the seal comprises a silicone seal.

16. The joint of claim 15 , wherein the seal comprises a protective coating on opposed surfaces of the joint.

17. The joint of claim 16 , wherein the seal reaction product covers opposed surfaces of the joint.

18. The joint of claim 14 , wherein the concrete reaction product also covers opposed surfaces of the joint.

19. The joint of claim 15 , wherein the joint comprises a preformed seal.

20. The joint of claim 15 , further comprising:

the concrete reaction product on an outer surface of at least a portion of at least one section of concrete adjacent to the joint.
