Abstract

An end effector includes an upper jaw, a lower jaw, and a staple cartridge assembly that is received within the lower jaw. The staple cartridge assembly includes an actuation sled and a knife sled. A drive beam is received within the lower jaw and is movable between a retracted beam position and an advanced beam position to move the actuation sled and the knife sled from retracted positions to advanced positions. The end effector includes a locking clip to releasably couple the drive beam to the knife sled.

Claims (39)

1. An end effector comprising:

an upper jaw;

a lower jaw coupled to the upper jaw such that the upper jaw and the lower jaw are positionable in approximated and spaced apart positions;

a staple cartridge assembly received within the lower jaw, the staple cartridge assembly including a cartridge body, staples, pushers, an actuation sled, and a knife sled, the cartridge body defining a knife slot and staple retaining slots positioned on each side of the knife slot, each of the staple retaining slots receiving one of the pushers and one of the staples, the actuation sled movable within the cartridge body from a sled retracted position to a sled advanced position to eject the staples from the cartridge body, the knife sled positioned proximally of the actuation sled within the cartridge body and having a knife blade;

a drive beam positioned in the lower jaw at a position proximal of the knife sled, the drive beam including a laterally projecting member positioned to engage the upper jaw and a retention foot positioned to engage the lower jaw, the drive beam movable between a beam retracted position and a beam advanced position to advance the knife sled and the actuation sled within the cartridge body; and

a lock clip configured to releasably couple the drive beam to the knife sled.

2. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the lock clip includes a hook, and the knife sled defines a window, the hook received within the window to releasably couple the drive member to the knife sled.

3. The end effector of claim 2 , wherein the lock clip is formed of a resilient material.

4. The end effector of claim 3 , wherein the lock clip is movable from a disengaged position uncoupled from the knife sled to an engaged position coupled to the knife sled.

5. The end effector of claim 4 , wherein the cartridge body defines a relief, and a portion of the lock clip is received in the relief when the drive beam is moved to the beam retracted position to uncouple the drive beam from the knife sled.

6. The end effector of claim 5 , further including a drive screw supported in the lower jaw.

7. The end effector of claim 6 , wherein the drive beam defines a threaded bore that receives the drive screw, the drive screw rotatable to advance the dive beam between the beam retracted position and the beam advanced position.

8. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the upper jaw supports an anvil.

9. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein each of the anvil and the cartridge body supports a buttress.

10. A surgical instrument comprising:

an instrument housing;

a shaft assembly extending distally from the instrument housing, the shaft assembly having a proximal portion coupled to the instrument housing, and a distal portion; and

an articulating neck assembly secured to the distal portion of the shaft assembly; and

an end effector secured to the articulating neck assembly, the end effector including:

an upper jaw;

a lower jaw coupled to the upper jaw such that the upper jaw and the lower jaw are positionable in approximated and spaced apart positions;

a staple cartridge assembly received within the lower jaw, the staple cartridge assembly including a cartridge body, staples, pushers, an actuation sled, and a knife sled, the cartridge body defining a knife slot and staple retaining slots positioned on each side of the knife slot, each of the staple retaining slots receiving one of the pushers and one of the staples, the actuation sled movable within the cartridge body from a sled retracted position to a sled advanced position to eject the staples from the cartridge body, the knife sled positioned proximally of the actuation sled within the cartridge body and having a knife blade;

a drive beam positioned in the lower jaw at a position proximal of the knife sled, the drive beam including a laterally projecting member positioned to engage the upper jaw and a retention foot positioned to engage the lower jaw, the drive beam movable between a beam retracted position and a beam advanced position to advance the knife sled and the actuation sled within the cartridge body; and

a lock clip configured to releasably couple the drive beam to the knife sled.

11. The surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein the lock clip of the end effector includes a hook, and the knife sled defines a window, the hook received within the window to releasably couple the drive member to the knife sled.

12. The surgical instrument of claim 11 , wherein the lock clip is formed of a resilient material.

13. The surgical instrument of claim 12 , wherein the lock clip is movable from a disengaged position uncoupled from the knife sled to an engaged position coupled to the knife sled.

14. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the cartridge body defines a relief, and a portion of the lock clip is received in the relief when the drive beam is moved to the beam retracted position to uncouple the drive beam from the knife sled.

15. The surgical instrument of claim 14 , further including a drive screw supported in the lower jaw.

16. The surgical instrument of claim 15 , wherein the drive beam defines a threaded bore that receives the drive screw, the drive screw rotatable to advance the dive beam between the beam retracted position and the beam advanced position.

17. The surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein the upper jaw supports an anvil.

18. The surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein each of the anvil and the cartridge body supports a buttress.

19. An end effector comprising:

an upper jaw;

a lower jaw coupled to the upper jaw such that the upper jaw and the lower jaw are positionable in approximated and spaced apart positions;

a staple cartridge assembly received within the lower jaw, the staple cartridge assembly including a cartridge body, staples, an actuation sled, and a knife sled, the cartridge body defining a knife slot and staple retaining slots positioned on each side of the knife slot, each of the staple retaining slots receiving one of the pushers and one of the staples, the actuation sled movable within the cartridge body from a sled retracted position to a sled advanced position to eject the staples from the cartridge body, the knife sled positioned proximally of the actuation sled within the cartridge body and having a knife blade;

a drive beam positioned in the lower jaw at a position proximal of the knife sled, the drive beam movable between a beam retracted position and a beam advanced position to advance the knife sled and the actuation sled within the cartridge body; and

a resilient lock clip releasably coupling the drive beam to the knife sled.

20. The end effector of claim 19 , wherein the lock clip includes a hook, and the knife sled defines a window, the hook received within the window to releasably couple the drive member to the knife sled.
