Abstract

Systems and methods for increasing the concentration of a desired CO x reduction reaction product are described. In some embodiments, the systems and methods include ethylene purification.

Claims (22)

. A system for producing a gas phase product, comprising:

a carbon oxide (CO x ) reduction reactor comprising a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) that comprises one or more ion conductive polymer layers and a cathode catalyst for facilitating chemical reduction of CO x to ethylene, the CO x reduction reactor configured to receive a feed stream comprising CO x and outlet a gas phase product stream comprising ethylene; and a recycle loop configured to recycle, without separation, a portion of the gas phase product stream such that the feed stream comprises a mixture of the portion of the gas phase product stream and fresh CO x ; and

an ethylene purification system configured to receive a mixture containing ethylene from the CO x reduction reactor and produce a purified stream having a higher ethylene concentration than the mixture.

. The system of claim 1 , wherein the recycle loop comprises a compressor.

. The system of claim 1 , wherein the CO x is carbon dioxide (CO 2 ).

. The system of claim 1 , wherein the MEA is a bipolar MEA.

. The system of claim 1 , wherein the MEA is an anion-exchange membrane (AEM)-only MEA.

. The system of claim 1 , wherein the MEA is a cation-exchange membrane-only MEA.

. The system of claim 1 , wherein the MEA comprises a liquid buffer layer disposed between the cathode catalyst and the one or more ion conductive polymer layers.

. The system of claim 7 , wherein the liquid buffer is an aqueous alkaline solution.

. The system of claim 8 , wherein the aqueous alkaline solution is solution of one of KOH, NaOH, NaHCO 3 , and KHCO 3 .

. The system of claim 1 , wherein the CO x reduction reactor comprises a stack of electrochemical cells each comprising an MEA.

. The system of claim 1 , wherein the ethylene purification system comprises one or more components or subsystems for (a) absorbing and separating carbon dioxide, (b) separating ethylene from one or more other components by membrane filtration, (c) fractional distillation to separate ethylene and methane, or (d) chemically converting methane to ethylene, or (e) any combination of (a)-(d).

. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cathode catalyst for facilitating chemical reduction of CO x to ethylene comprises copper.

. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mixture containing ethylene comprises CO, CO 2 , and H 2 .

. The system of claim 1 , further comprising one or more additional CO x reduction reactors stacked in parallel with the CO x reduction reactor.

. The system of claim 14 , wherein the recycle loop is configured to recycle, without separation, a portion of gas phase product stream from the one or more additional CO x reduction reactors.

. The system of claim 1 , wherein the CO x is CO.

. The system of claim 1 , wherein the CO x is a mixture of CO and CO 2 .

. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an air capture subsystem upstream of the CO x reduction reactor.

. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cathode catalyst is in one of the one or more ion conductive polymer layers.

. The system of claim 19 , wherein the cathode catalyst is in an anion conductive polymer layer.
