Abstract

A system for visualizing a tissue region of interest includes an imaging element, a sheath, and a dilator. The imaging element is configured to visualize tissue. The sheath includes a channel configured to receive the imaging element. The imaging element is positionable along a central longitudinal axis of the sheath and positionable in an off-axis position relative to the central longitudinal axis. The sheath comprises a flexible section defining at least a portion of the channel. The dilator is configured to advance through the channel to force the imaging element into the off-axis position. The dilator is configured to cause the imaging element to bulge the flexible section as the dilator is advanced through the channel.

Claims (19)

1. A system for visualizing a tissue region of interest, comprising:

an imaging element configured to visualize tissue;

a sheath including a channel configured to receive the imaging element, the imaging element being positionable along a central longitudinal axis of the sheath and positionable in an off-axis position relative to the central longitudinal axis, wherein the sheath comprises a flexible section defining at least a portion of the channel; and

a dilator configured to advance through the channel to force the imaging element into the off-axis position, wherein the dilator is configured to cause the imaging element to bulge the flexible section as the dilator is advanced through the channel.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the dilator includes an instrument lumen sized for passage of an instrument therethrough.

3. The system of claim 2 , further comprising the instrument.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the instrument comprises an ablation probe.

5. The system of claim 3 , wherein the instrument comprises a needle.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the dilator comprises a preformed arcuate shape.

7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a delivery catheter, wherein the sheath is separately articulatable from the delivery catheter.

8. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a barrier or membrane projecting distally from the sheath and defining an open area in fluid communication with the channel.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sheath includes a fluid delivery lumen.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the imaging element comprises at least one optical fiber, CCD imager, or CMOS imager.

11. A method of visualizing a tissue region of interest, comprising:

positioning an imaging element in a channel of a sheath and on a central longitudinal axis of the sheath, wherein the sheath comprises a flexible section defining at least a portion of the channel;

advancing a dilator through the channel; and

repositioning the imaging element with the dilator by forcing the imaging element from the central longitudinal axis into an off-axis position relative to the central longitudinal axis by causing the imaging element to bulge the flexible section as the dilator is advanced through the channel.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the dilator comprises a preformed arcuate shape.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising articulating the sheath separately from a delivery catheter, the delivery catheter being coaxial with the sheath.
