Abstract

A system and method for monitoring characteristics of an electric energy device includes generating an external short from the electric energy device. The external short occurs at a known distance from a sensor and has at least one known external resistance. The received signal representing change in electromagnetic field due to the applied external short may be analyzed to determine a signal parameter that is then analyzed in comparison to a lookup table, based on the known conditions including distance, temperature and the external resistance. The output of this analyses in comparison with expected values may be utilized to identify a characteristic of the energy device.

Claims (47)

1. A method for monitoring characteristics of an electric energy device, comprising:

generating at least two external shorts with known current or voltage profiles at the electric energy device;

sensing at least one change in an electromagnetic field emitted by the electric energy device due to the generated at least two external shorts by at least one sensor at a predetermined distance from the device;

determining at least one signal parameter based on the sensed at least one change in electromagnetic field in the vicinity of the electric energy device; and

determining at least one characteristic of the electric energy device based on the at least one signal parameter.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the at least two generated external shorts causes a rapid discharge of a double layer of the electric energy device.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the change in the electromagnetic field emitted is due to the rapid discharge of the double layer.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the generated at least two external shorts are consecutive.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the generated at least two external shorts are generated at a frequency of 2 kHz or less.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the at least one characteristic comprises a state of charge of the energy device, a state of health of the energy device, an internal resistance of the energy device, an internal impedance of the energy device, an internal short of the energy device, or a combination of these.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising analyzing, using a characteristic monitor, a plurality of received signals corresponding to the sensed at least one change in the electromagnetic field to determine the signal parameter.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of received signals are consecutive and received at a frequency of 2 kHz or less.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of received signals are received by a signal analyzer from the at least on sensor.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the characteristic monitor comprises the at least one sensor and the signal analyzer.

11. The method of claim 7 , each of the at least one signal parameter being based on:

where S is the Strength of the received signal, D is a distance between the energy device and the sensor, R is a known external resistance selected based on the application and battery that can be in series or parallel to the battery and may vary, r is internal resistance of the energy device to the generated short, Q is a stored coulomb in the energy device, V is a voltage of the energy device, and T is temperature.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the signal parameter includes an instantaneous parameter based on a given time between 1 nanosecond and 10 microseconds from the generation of an external short of the at least two external shorts.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises adjusting a charge rate based on the determined at least one characteristic of the electric energy device.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the charge rate is adjusted based on at least one characteristic monitor threshold for the at least one characteristic of the electric energy device.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the charge rate is adjusted based on characteristics of the electric energy device determined based on successive signal parameters.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electric energy device comprises a rechargeable Li-ion battery.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein each external short event is 0.1 minutes or less.

18. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, generating at least one short generation output via a characteristic monitor in communication with a short generator; the generating at least two external shorts occurring in response to the at least one short generation output.

19. The method of claim 1 , the step of sensing comprising sensing the at least one change in the electromagnetic field with at least one electromagnetic coil.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is performed during the operation of the energy device; and wherein the method comprises determining a health of the energy device.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electric energy device is a battery comprising at least one battery cell.

22. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of generating at least two external shorts comprises generating a plurality of successive external short events; and wherein a duration of the method is greater than a duration of the step of generating the plurality of successive external short events.
