Abstract

Apparatus and methods for delivering humidified breathing gas to a patient are provided. The apparatus includes a humidification system configured to deliver humidified breathing gas to a patient. The humidification system includes a vapor transfer unit and a base unit. The vapor transfer unit includes a liquid passage, a breathing gas passage, and a vapor transfer device positioned to transfer vapor to the breathing gas passage from the liquid passage. The base unit includes a base unit that releasably engages the vapor transfer unit to enable reuse of the base unit and selective disposal of the vapor transfer unit. The liquid passage is not coupled to the base unit for liquid flow therebetween when the vapor transfer unit is received by the base unit.

Claims (38)

1. A vapor transfer unit for delivering breathing gas, the vapor transfer unit comprising:

a housing comprising a releasable interface configured to couple the vapor transfer unit to a base unit that has a pump driving portion and a heater interface;

a liquid passage comprising a liquid inlet configured to receive liquid from a liquid supply line;

a breathing gas passage comprising a gas inlet configured to receive gas from a gas outlet on the base unit, the gas inlet having a proximal opening through which the breathing gas is able to flow in from the base unit, and a distal opening through which the breathing gas is able to flow out of the gas inlet;

a breathing gas outlet configured to receive a patient delivery tube;

a cylindrical vapor transfer device releasably mounted to the vapor transfer unit, the cylindrical vapor transfer device comprising a cartridge, the cartridge being configured to releasably mount to the housing, the cartridge having an exterior frame with a first gas passage configured to releasably mate with the distal opening of the gas inlet and receive the breathing gas flowing from the base unit, and a second gas passage configured to releasably mate with the breathing gas outlet, the cartridge having a vapor transfer region configured to combine the flowing breathing gas with heated vapor to produce heated and humidified breathing gas for delivery through the breathing gas outlet;

a liquid reservoir within the housing, the reservoir having a top end and a bottom end in fluid communication with the liquid inlet and the vapor transfer device;

a liquid level detection device for monitoring a liquid level in the liquid reservoir;

a heater adapted to heat a liquid in the vapor transfer unit;

a temperature measurement device for measuring a liquid temperature in the vapor transfer unit; and

a first pump portion disposed at the bottom end of the liquid reservoir and configured to be operationally coupled to the pump driving portion in the base unit when the vapor transfer unit is mounted to the base unit.

2. The vapor transfer unit of claim 1 , wherein the first pump portion is magnetically driven by the pump driving portion to advance liquid through the liquid passage of the vapor transfer unit.

3. The vapor transfer unit of claim 2 , wherein first pump portion comprises an impeller.

4. The vapor transfer unit of claim 3 , wherein the pump driving portion comprises a stator operationally coupled to the impeller.

5. The vapor transfer unit of claim 4 , wherein the cartridge and liquid reservoir are configured to be in fluid communication so that liquid is able to flow to the cartridge from the liquid reservoir and heated liquid is able to flow from the cartridge to the liquid reservoir.

6. The vapor transfer unit of claim 5 , wherein the cartridge is a high flow cartridge operable with a microcontroller in the base unit configured with a setpoint of between 8 liters per minute and 40 liters per minute.

7. The vapor transfer unit of claim 5 , wherein the cartridge is a low flow cartridge operable with a microcontroller in the base unit configured with a setpoint of between 0.5 liters per minute and 8 liters per minute.

8. The vapor transfer unit of claim 5 , comprising a bubble detection device for monitoring air bubble formation within the liquid reservoir.

9. The vapor transfer unit of claim 8 , wherein the bubble detection device comprises a bubble reflector aligned with a bubble sensor mounted on the base unit and configured to monitor air bubble formation within the liquid reservoir when the vapor transfer device is coupled to the base unit.

10. The vapor transfer unit of claim 9 , comprising a sight glass that provides an indication of liquid level in the vapor transfer unit.

11. The vapor transfer unit of claim 10 , wherein a liquid level detection device is configured to interface with a liquid level sensor when the vapor transfer device is coupled to the base unit.

12. The vapor transfer unit of claim 11 , comprising a float disposed in the liquid reservoir, the float and the reservoir configured such that when the reservoir is full, the float is in a first position and causes a first amount of light to be reflected to the liquid level sensor.

13. The vapor transfer unit of claim 12 , wherein the float and the reservoir are configured such that when the reservoir is empty, the float is in a second position and causes a second amount of light to be reflected to the liquid level sensor.

14. The vapor transfer unit of claim 13 , wherein the float is ball shaped.

15. The vapor transfer unit of claim 4 , comprising an indicator mounted on an exterior surface of the vapor transfer device.

16. The vapor transfer unit of claim 15 , wherein the indicator is disposed on the vapor transfer device such that when the vapor transfer device is coupled to the vapor transfer unit and mounted on the base unit, an electronic reader aligns with the indicator.

17. The vapor transfer unit of claim 16 , wherein the indicator indicates a type of vapor transfer device installed on the vapor transfer unit.

18. The vapor transfer unit of claim 17 , wherein the indicator indicates whether the vapor transfer device installed on the vapor transfer unit is a high flow device or a low flow device.

19. The vapor transfer unit of claim 4 , wherein the temperature measurement device comprises a temperature reflector aligned with a temperature sensor configured to provide a liquid temperature in the vapor transfer unit when the vapor transfer device is coupled to the base unit.

20. The vapor transfer unit of claim 19 , wherein the temperature sensor provides an indication of a temperature of liquid that exits the vapor transfer unit at an outlet in fluid communication with the patient delivery tube.

21. The vapor transfer unit of claim 20 , wherein the temperature sensor provides an indication of a temperature of liquid that enters the vapor transfer unit at an outlet in fluid communication with the patient delivery tube.
