Abstract

An electronic key may include a partial capacitor comprising a capacitive metal plate in communication with a processor. The capacitive metal plate of the partial capacitor is configured to form a capacitor with a corresponding capacitive metal plate of a lock when brought into proximity with the metal plate of the lock. Data may be transferred from the key to the lock using a capacitor formed by combining the two metal plates, wherein a common ground is established between the metal plate of the key and the metal plate of the lock through a parasitic capacitance present between the key and lock circuitry. Audit trail data may be recorded based on usage of the key.

Claims (54)

1. A method of detecting a lock state of an electronic lock, the method comprising:

by an electronic key comprising a hardware processor,

receiving a first signal indicating that the electronic lock is in an unlocked state;

storing a first time value corresponding to an unlock event time based at least in part on receiving the first signal;

transmitting a second signal to the electronic lock indicating that the electronic key is requesting a response from the electronic lock;

determining that the electronic lock is in a locked state based at least in part on not receiving a response to the second signal; and

storing a second time value corresponding to a lock event time based at least in part on determining that the electronic lock is in the locked state.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining that the electronic lock is in the unlocked state based at least in part on the first signal.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting an unlock signal to the electronic lock prior to receiving the first signal.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a user identifier associated with the electronic key; and

associating an unlock event with the user identifier and the first time value.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the first signal comprises receiving the first signal from the electronic lock, and wherein the method further comprises:

determining an unlock event based at least in part on receiving the first signal from the electronic lock;

storing first information indicating that determining the unlock event is based at least in part on receiving the first signal from the electronic lock;

determining a lock event based at least in part on not receiving a response to the second signal; and

storing second information indicating that determining the lock event is based at least in part on not receiving a response to the second signal.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second signal is one of a plurality of heartbeat signals.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second signal is one of a plurality of sequential heartbeat signals, and wherein determining that the electronic lock is in the locked state is further based at least in part on not receiving a response to the plurality of sequential heartbeat signals.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein storing the first time value comprises storing the first time value at one or more of a memory of the electronic key or a memory of the electronic lock.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising storing an indication of a length of time between the unlock event time and the lock event time.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the unlock event time indicates a time associated with unlocking of the electronic lock and the lock event time indicates a time associated with locking of the electronic lock.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the unlock event time indicates a time associated with determining that the electronic lock is in the unlocked state and the lock event time indicates a time associated with determining that the electronic lock is in the locked state.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electronic key further comprises a power source configured to power the hardware processor.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining an unlock event location in response to receiving the first signal; and

storing the unlock event location.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining key identification information for the electronic key; and

associating an unlock event with the key identification information and the first time value.

15. An electronic key comprising:

a memory configured to store computer-executable instructions; and

a hardware processor in communication with the memory and configured to execute the computer-executable instructions to at least:

receive a first signal from an electronic lock indicating that the electronic lock is in an unlocked state;

store a first time value corresponding to an unlock event time based at least in part on receiving the first signal;

transmit a second signal to the electronic lock indicating that the electronic key is requesting a response from the electronic lock;

determine that the electronic lock is in a locked state based at least in part on not receiving a response to the second signal; and

store a second time value corresponding to a lock event time based at least in part on determining that the electronic lock is in the locked state.

16. The electronic key of claim 15 , wherein the hardware processor is further configured to execute the computer-executable instructions to at least:

receive the first signal in response to an actuation of a locking mechanism of the electronic lock.

17. The electronic key of claim 15 , wherein the electronic lock is configured to lock an item, wherein the hardware processor is further configured to execute the computer-executable instructions to at least:

determine that the electronic lock is in the unlocked state based at least in part on receiving the first signal;

determine a status of the item, wherein the status of the item indicates that the item is opened or closed; and

store the status of the item.

18. A method of detecting a lock state of an electronic lock, the method comprising:

by an electronic key comprising a hardware processor,

determining that the electronic key is in a first position with respect to the electronic lock;

determining that the electronic lock is in an unlocked state based at least in part on determining that the electronic key is in the first position;

storing a first time value corresponding to an unlock event time based at least in part on determining that the electronic lock is in the unlocked state;

determining that the electronic key is in a second position with respect to the electronic lock;

determining that the electronic lock is in a locked state based at least in part on determining that the electronic key is in the second position; and

storing a second time value corresponding to a lock event time based at least in part on determining that the electronic lock is in the locked state.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the electronic key is unable to be removed from the electronic lock while the electronic key is in the first position.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein determining that the electronic key is in the first position is based at least in part on alignment of one or more elements of the electronic key with one or more elements of the electronic lock.
