Abstract

An electronic key may include a partial capacitor comprising a capacitive metal plate in communication with a processor. The capacitive metal plate of the partial capacitor is configured to form a capacitor with a corresponding capacitive metal plate of a lock when brought into proximity with the metal plate of the lock. Data may be transferred from the key to the lock using a capacitor formed by combining the two metal plates, wherein a common ground is established between the metal plate of the key and the metal plate of the lock through a parasitic capacitance present between the key and lock circuitry. Audit trail data may be recorded based on usage of the key.

Claims (49)

1. A method of detecting a lock state of an electronic lock, the method comprising:

by an electronic key comprising a hardware processor,

determining that the electronic lock is in an unlocked state;

storing an identifier of an unlock event based at least in part on determining that the electronic lock is in the unlocked state;

transmitting a first signal to the electronic lock indicating that the electronic key is requesting a response from the electronic lock; and

storing an identifier of a lock event based at least in part on not receiving a response to the first signal.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining that the electronic lock has transitioned from the unlocked state to a locked state, wherein storing the identifier of the lock event is based at least in part on determining that the electronic lock has transitioned from the unlocked state to the locked state.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving a second signal indicating that the electronic lock is in an unlocked state, wherein determining that the electronic lock is in the unlocked state is based at least in part on the second signal.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a second signal indicating that the electronic lock is in an unlocked state, wherein determining that the electronic lock is in the unlocked state is based at least in part on the second signal; and

storing a time value corresponding to an unlock event time based at least in part on receiving the second signal.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a second signal indicating that the electronic lock is in an unlocked state, wherein determining that the electronic lock is in the unlocked state is based at least in part on the second signal; and

transmitting an unlock signal to the electronic lock prior to receiving the second signal.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining a location identifier associated with the electronic key, the method further comprising one or more of:

associating the unlock event with the location identifier; or

associating the lock event with the location identifier.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining key identification information associated with the electronic key, the method further comprising one or more of:

associating the unlock event with the key identification information; or

associating the lock event with the key identification information.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining that the electronic lock is in a locked state based at least in part on not receiving a response to the first signal.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electronic key further comprises a power source configured to power the hardware processor.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first signal is one of a plurality of heartbeat signals.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first signal is one of a plurality of sequential heartbeat signals, the method further comprising further comprising determining that the electronic lock has transitioned from the unlocked state to a locked state based at least in part on not receiving a response to the plurality of sequential heartbeat signals.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein storing the identifier of the unlock event comprises storing the identifier of the unlock event at one or more of a memory of the electronic key or a memory of the electronic lock.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining an identifier of a user; and

associating the unlock event with the identifier of the user or associating the lock event with the identifier of the user.

14. A method of detecting a lock state of an electronic lock, the method comprising:

by an electronic key comprising a hardware processor,

determining that the electronic lock is in an unlocked state;

storing a first location identifier corresponding to an unlock event location based at least in part on determining that the electronic lock is in the unlocked state;

transmitting a first signal to the electronic lock indicating that the electronic key is requesting a response from the electronic lock; and

storing a second location identifier corresponding to a lock event location based at least in part on not receiving a response to the first signal.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising determining a user identifier associated with the electronic key, the method further comprising one or more of:

associating an unlock event with the user identifier and the first location identifier; or

associating a lock event with the user identifier and the second location identifier.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising determining key identification information associated with the electronic key, the method further comprising one or more of:

associating an unlock event with the key identification information and the first location identifier; or

associating a lock event with the key identification information and the second location identifier.

17. An electronic key comprising:

a memory configured to store computer-executable instructions; and

a hardware processor in communication with the memory and configured to execute the computer-executable instructions to at least:

determine that an electronic lock is in an unlocked state;

transmit a signal to the electronic lock indicating that the electronic key is requesting a response from the electronic lock; and

store a time value corresponding to an unlock duration time based at least in part on determining that the electronic lock is in the unlocked state and not receiving a response to the signal.

18. The electronic key of claim 17 , wherein the time value comprises an indication of a length of time between an unlock event time and a lock event time.

19. The electronic key of claim 17 , wherein the time value comprises an indication of a length of time between an unlock event time and a lock event time, and wherein the unlock event time indicates a time associated with unlocking of the electronic lock and the lock event time indicates a time associated with locking of the electronic lock.

20. The electronic key of claim 17 , wherein the time value comprises an indication of a length of time between an unlock event time and a lock event time, and wherein the unlock event time indicates a time associated with determining that the electronic lock is in the unlocked state and the lock event time indicates a time associated with determining that the electronic lock is in a locked state.
