Abstract

Techniques are provided for controlling extraction of landfill gas from a landfill. The techniques include obtaining a measure of pressure in the gas extraction system upstream of a flow control mechanism, wherein the measure of pressure is obtained at a point between at least one well and the at least one flow control mechanism. Further, at least one processor may be used to determine that the measure of pressure in the gas extraction system relative to a measure of atmospheric pressure outside of the gas extraction system is not negative. In response to determining that the measure of pressure in the gas extraction system relative to the measure of atmospheric pressure is not negative, the flow rate of landfill gas being extracted from the at least one well is adjusted using the at least one flow control mechanism to achieve a negative pressure in the gas extraction system.

Claims (34)

obtaining a measure of pressure in the gas extraction system upstream of the at least one flow control mechanism, wherein the measure of pressure in the gas extraction system is obtained at a point between the at least one well and the at least one flow control mechanism;

determining, using at least one processor, that the measure of pressure in the gas extraction system relative to a measure of atmospheric pressure outside of the gas extraction system is not negative; and

in response to determining that the measure of pressure in the gas extraction system relative to the measure of atmospheric pressure is not negative, adjusting the flow rate of landfill gas being extracted from the at least one well using the at least one flow control mechanism to achieve a negative pressure in the gas extraction system.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising obtaining the measure of atmospheric pressure.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one flow control mechanism comprises a valve.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

automatically opening, at scheduled time intervals, at least one valve coupled to the gas analysis sample chamber, to allow gas to flow from the well piping to the gas analysis sample chamber; and

after automatically opening the at least one valve to allow gas to flow from the well piping to the gas analysis sample chamber, automatically opening the at least one valve to allow ambient air to flow from an ambient air source to the gas analysis sample chamber.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the automatically opening the at least one valve to allow gas to flow from the well piping to the gas analysis sample chamber is performed at least once per day.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the automatically opening the at least one valve to allow gas to flow from the well piping to the gas analysis sample chamber is performed at least once per hour.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the obtaining the measure of pressure is performed using at least one pressure sensor, and the at least one pressure sensor is disposed within the well piping.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein;

the obtaining the measure of pressure is performed using at least one pressure sensor;

the method is performed with at least one controller located remotely from the at least one pressure sensor; and
