Abstract

Described techniques can enable seamless handover of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) between base stations. Aspects may include obtaining measurements reports of a group of target base stations. Each measurement report includes a target height threshold of a target base station. Further embodiments can include receiving a notification that a UAV communicatively coupled to a serving base station has exceeded a serving height threshold of the serving base station, selecting a first target base station from the group of target base stations based on a first target height threshold of the first target base station, and providing instructions to the serving base station to perform a handover of the UAV from the serving base station to the target base station based on the selection. The serving base station performs the handover of the UAV to the target base station based on the instructions. Other embodiments are included.

selecting a first target base station from the group of target base stations based on a first target height threshold associated with the first target base station from the group of target base stations and the data consumption associated with the UAV, resulting in a selection; and

providing instructions to the serving base station to perform a handover of the UAV from the serving base station to the target base station based on the selection, wherein the serving base station performs the handover of the UAV to the target base station based on the instructions.

9 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the operations comprise receiving a notification that the UAV has reached a serving height threshold associated with the serving base station.

10 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the serving base station, in response to receiving the notification from the UAV that the UAV has reached a serving height threshold, requests the UAV to report signal strength and signal quality of neighboring base stations, which are to the select the target base station.

11 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the serving base station considers a height threshold of each neighboring base station as an additional criterion for selecting the target base station.

12 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein each of the group of measurement reports includes a target signal strength associated with a target base station from the group of target base stations resulting in a group of target signal strengths, wherein the selecting of the first target base station comprises selecting the first target base station based on a first signal strength associated with the first target base station.
