Abstract

A method and system determine a profile of a website. A record of visits by a group of profiled users to a web site is generated. Each of the profiled users has associated user demographic information. The profile for the website is calculated using the associated user demographic information and the record of visits. The profile consists of demographic characteristics of the web site. A website forecast is determined for a defined time period. The website forecast characterizes a target audience that consists of members of demographic subgroups with percentages in the website forecast that are greater than a predetermined threshold. A data or service is provided based on the calculated profile and website forecast.

Claims (48)

1. A computer-implemented method of determining a profile of a website comprising:

generating a record of visits by a group of profiled users to a web site, wherein each of the profiled users has associated user demographic information;

calculating the profile for the website using the associated user demographic information and the record of visits, wherein the profile comprises demographic characteristics of the website;

determining a website forecast for a defined time period, wherein the website forecast characterizes a target audience, wherein the target audience comprises members of one or more demographic subgroups with percentages in the website forecast that are greater than a predetermined threshold; and

providing a data or service based on the calculated profile and website forecast.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein:

the defined time period is daily.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein:

the defined time period is hourly.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein:

the website forecast is expressed as a website composition vector comprising a plurality of elements corresponding to the website, each element corresponding to a demographic subgroup of one or more demographic categories, each element comprising a probability that a random user visiting the website is in the demographic subgroup corresponding to the element.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , wherein:

multiple website composition vectors from multiple websites are grouped together in a website composition file having a plurality of lines;

each of the plurality of lines has a plurality of fields;

each of the plurality of fields corresponds to a fraction of the profiled users, that are visiting a corresponding website of the multiple web sites, for the profiled users that are members of a corresponding demographic subgroup of the one or more demographic subgroups.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 5 , wherein:

each line of the web site composition file has one line per website with each line providing the website composition vector of the web site represented by that line.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 6 , wherein:

each line corresponds to a particular to a particular defined time period for the website represented in that line.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein:

the website forecast characterizes various websites at various portions of the defined time period to determine where and when members of the target audience are visiting other websites to determine where and when to provide the data or service.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein:

a profile of the profiled users is determined based on web browsing of skewed websites.

10. A computer-implemented system for determining a demographic profile of a website comprising:

a computer having a memory;

an application executing on the computer, wherein the application:

generates a record of visits by a group of profiled users to a website, wherein each of the profiled users has associated user demographic information;

calculates the profile for the website using the associated user demographic information and the record of visits, wherein the profile comprises demographic characteristics of the website;

determines a website forecast for a defined time period, wherein the website forecast characterizes a target audience, wherein the target audience comprises members of one or more demographic subgroups with percentages in the website forecast that are greater than a predetermined threshold; and

provides a data or service based on the calculated profile and website forecast.

11. The computer-implemented system of claim 10 , wherein:

the defined time period is daily.

12. The computer-implemented system of claim 10 , wherein:

the defined time period is hourly.

13. The computer-implemented system of claim 10 , wherein:

the website forecast is expressed as a website composition vector comprising a plurality of elements corresponding to the website, each element corresponding to a demographic subgroup of one or more demographic categories, each element comprising a probability that a random user visiting the website is in the demographic subgroup corresponding to the element.

14. The computer-implemented system of claim 13 , wherein:

multiple website composition vectors from multiple websites are grouped together in a website composition file having a plurality of lines;

each of the plurality of lines has a plurality of fields;

each of the plurality of fields corresponds to a fraction of the profiled users, that are visiting a corresponding website of the multiple web sites, for the profiled users that are members of a corresponding demographic subgroup of the one or more demographic subgroups.

15. The computer-implemented system of claim 14 , wherein:

each line of the web site composition file has one line per website with each line providing the website composition vector of the web site represented by that line.

16. The computer-implemented system of claim 15 , wherein:

each line corresponds to a particular to a particular defined time period for the website represented in that line.

17. The computer-implemented system of claim 16 , wherein:

the website forecast characterizes various websites at various portions of the defined time period to determine where and when members of the target audience are visiting other websites to determine where and when to provide the data or service.

18. The computer-implemented system of claim 16 , wherein:

a profile of the profiled users is determined based on web browsing of skewed websites.
