Abstract

A method is disclosed for displaying a sequence of video items on an electronic device. During playback of a current video item, a dismissal input such as a swipe or tap/click is received via a user input mechanism, indicating that display of the current video item is to be ceased and that display of the next video item in the sequence is to be commenced. In response to the dismissal input, summary information is displayed on the display screen, providing non-video communication of an informational payload of the current video item. A timer is started at the commencement of display of the summary information, at the expiry of which display of the next video item is to be commenced. In response to a resumption input such as a touchscreen tap or cursor click on the summary information before expiry of the timer, playback of the current video item is resumed via the display screen.

Claims (42)

1. A method comprising:

causing playback, via a display screen of an electronic device, of a current video item forming part of a predefined sequence of video items;

during the playback of the current video item, receiving a dismissal input via a user input mechanism of the electronic device, the dismissal input comprising user input indicating that display of the current video item is to be ceased and that display of a next video item in the sequence is to be commenced;

in an automated operation performed by a computer processor device in response to and conditional on the dismissal input, displaying summary information on the display screen in replacement of the current video item, the summary information providing non-video communication of an informational payload of the current video item;

at commencement of display of the summary information, starting a timer set to expire after a fixed interval, the display of the summary information to be ceased at expiry of the timer; and

in response to a resumption input on the summary information before expiry of the timer, resuming playback of the current video item via the display screen, wherein the resumption input comprises one of a cursor click or a touchscreen tap on the summary information displayed in replacement of the video item.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the dismissal input comprises one of a cursor click or a touchscreen tap on the video item.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the dismissal input comprises a swipe input on the video item.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, in a further iteration comprising display of summary information for a further video item in sequence:

displaying the summary information for all of the fixed interval;

upon expiry of the timer, automatically removing the summary information from the display screen; and

commencing display of a next video item immediately subsequent to said further video item in the sequence.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the video item comprises a video advertisement; and

the non-video summary information comprises a non-video advertisement, wherein the video advertisement and the non-video advertisement provide promotional information with respect to a common subject.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the video item comprises one of entertainment material or educational material, the non-video summary information comprising bibliographic information about the video item.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the non-video summary information comprises a title card for the video item that is to be dismissed responsive to the dismissal input.

8. A system comprising:

one or more computer processor devices; and

memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more computer processor devices, configure the one or more computer processor devices to perform operations comprising:

causing playback, via a display screen of an electronic device, of a current video item forming part of a predefined sequence of video items;

during the playback of the current video item, receiving a dismissal input via a user input mechanism of the electronic device, the dismissal input comprising user input indicating that display of the current video item is to be ceased and that display of a next video item in the sequence is to be commenced;

in an automated operation performed in response to and conditional on the dismissal input, displaying summary information on the display screen in replacement of the current video item, the summary information providing non-video communication of an informational payload of the current video item;

at commencement of display of the summary information, starting a timer set to expire after a fixed interval, the display of the summary information to be ceased at expiry of the timer; and

in response to a resumption input on the summary information before expiry of the timer, resuming playback of the current video item via the display screen, wherein the resumption input comprises one of a cursor click or a touchscreen tap on the summary information displayed in replacement of the video item.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the dismissal input comprises one of a cursor click or a touchscreen tap on the video item.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the dismissal input comprises a swipe input on the video item.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the instructions further configure the one or more computer processor devices to perform operations comprising, in a further iteration with respect to post-dismissal display of summary information for a further video item in the sequence:

displaying the summary information for all of the fixed interval;

upon expiry of the timer, automatically removing the summary information from the display screen; and

commencing display of a next video item immediately subsequent to said further video item in the sequence.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein:

the video item comprises a video advertisement; and

the non-video summary information comprises a non-video advertisement, wherein the video advertisement and the non-video advertisement provide promotional information with respect to a common subject.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the video item comprises one of entertainment material or educational material, the non-video summary information comprising bibliographic information about the video item.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the non-video summary information comprises a title card for the video item that is to be dismissed responsive to the dismissal input.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon instructions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to perform operations comprising:

causing playback, via a display screen of an electronic device, of a current video item forming part of a predefined sequence of video items;

during the playback of the current video item, receiving a dismissal input via a user input mechanism of the electronic device, the dismissal input comprising user input indicating that display of the current video item is to be ceased and that display of a next video item in the sequence is to be commenced;

in an automated operation performed in response to and conditional on the dismissal input, displaying summary information on the display screen in replacement of the current video item, the summary information providing non-video communication of an informational payload of the current video item;

at commencement of display of the summary information, starting a timer set to expire after a fixed interval, the display of the summary information to be ceased at expiry of the timer; and

in response to a resumption input on the summary information before expiry of the timer, resuming playback of the current video item via the display screen, wherein the resumption input comprises one of a cursor click or a touchscreen tap on the summary information displayed in replacement of the video item.
