Abstract

Glass-based articles that include a hydrogen-containing layer extending from the surface of the article to a depth of layer. The hydrogen-containing layer includes a hydrogen concentration that decreases from a maximum hydrogen concentration to the depth of layer. The glass-based articles exhibit a high Vickers indentation cracking threshold. Glass compositions that are selected to promote the formation of the hydrogen-containing layer and methods of forming the glass-based article are also provided.

Claims (32)

1. A glass article strengthened by water treatment, comprising:

from greater than or equal to 11 mol % to less than or equal to 25 mol % K 2 O;

a surface of the glass article;

a hydrogen-containing layer extending from the surface into the glass article to a depth of layer, wherein the depth of layer refers to a first depth below the surface where hydrogen concentration matches a hydrogen concentration at a center of the glass article; and

a compressive stress layer from hydrogen species, the compressive stress layer extending from the surface of the glass article into the glass article to a depth of compression, wherein the depth of compression refers to the depth at which stress in the glass article changes from compressive to tensile;

wherein the depth of layer is greater than 5 μm from the surface; and

wherein the compressive stress layer comprises compressive stress of at least 100 MPa.

2. The glass article of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the compressive stress layer is free of larger alkali metal ions in place of smaller alkali metal ions in contrast to alkali metal content in the center of the glass article.

3. The glass article of claim 1 , further comprising a tensile stress region comprising a maximum central tension greater than or equal to 10 MPa.

4. The glass article of claim 1 , wherein a maximum hydrogen concentration is located at the surface of the glass-based article, and wherein hydrogen concentration of the hydrogen-containing layer decreases from the maximum hydrogen concentration to the depth of layer.

5. The glass article of claim 1 , wherein the hydrogen species comprise one or more of molecular water, hydroxyl, hydrogen ions, and hydronium.

6. The glass article of claim 1 , wherein the surface is a first surface of the glass article, and the glass article further comprises a second surface and a thickness that extends therebetween, wherein the depth of layer is greater than 0.005 times the thickness of the glass article.

7. The glass article of claim 1 , wherein the surface is a first surface of the glass article, and the glass article further comprises a second surface and a thickness that extends therebetween, wherein the thickness is less than or equal to 2 mm.

8. The glass article of claim 1 , wherein the surface is a first surface of the glass article, and the glass article further comprises a second surface and a thickness that extends therebetween, wherein the hydrogen-containing layer is a first hydrogen-containing layer, the depth of layer is a first depth of layer, and the glass article further comprises a second hydrogen containing layer extending from the second surface into the article to a second depth of layer; and wherein the glass article still further comprises a region between the first depth of layer and the second depth of layer, wherein hydrogen concentration of the region is substantially constant between the first depth of layer and the second depth of layer.

9. The glass article of claim 1 , wherein the surface is a first surface of the glass article, and the glass article further comprises a second surface and a thickness that extends therebetween, wherein the article is shaped as a sheet such that the first and second surfaces are opposing major surfaces thereof.

10. The glass article of claim 9 , wherein the article has a 3D shape such that the first and second surfaces are at least partially nonplanar.

11. The glass article of claim 9 , comprising at least some transparency.

12. A transportation article, comprising the glass article strengthened by steam treatment of claim 1 incorporated therein, wherein the transportation article is automotive.

13. A device, comprising:

electrical components comprising a display; and

a cover overlaying the display, wherein at least a portion of the cover comprises the glass article strengthened by steam treatment of claim 1 .

14. A glass article strengthened by water treatment, comprising:

from greater than or equal to 11 mol % to less than or equal to 25 mol % K 2 O;

a surface of the glass article;

a compressive stress layer from hydrogen species, the compressive stress layer extending from the surface of the glass article into the glass article to a depth of compression, wherein the depth of compression refers to the depth at which stress in the glass article changes from compressive to tensile; and

wherein the compressive stress layer comprises compressive stress of at least 100 MPa.

15. The glass article of claim 14 , wherein the surface is a first surface of the glass article, and the glass article further comprises a second surface and a thickness (t) that extends therebetween, wherein the depth of compression is greater than or equal to 0.05t.

16. The glass article of claim 14 , wherein the surface is a first surface of the glass article, and the glass article further comprises a second surface and a thickness that extends therebetween, wherein the thickness is less than or equal to 2 mm.

17. The glass article of claim 14 , further comprising a tensile stress region comprising a maximum central tension greater than or equal to 10 MPa.

18. The glass article of claim 14 , comprising at least some transparency.

19. The glass article of claim 14 , wherein the depth of compression is less than or equal to 115 μm.

20. The glass article of claim 14 , wherein the depth of compression is greater than or equal to 75 μm.
