Abstract

The present invention provides certain paper enhancing compositions, typically aqueous compositions, for use in the manufacture and coating of paper, and paper products. The paper enhancing compositions provide certain paper processing advantages and distinct final paper product characteristics. The present invention further provides carbonate enhancing composition useful for preparing enhanced carbonate compositions used in the paper manufacturing processes.

Claims (19)

1. A paper enhancing composition comprising: a solubility enhancing composition comprising an anionic component comprising sulfate ions, alone or in combination with bisulfate ions, having a concentration from about 8.00 moles per liter to about 13.00 moles per liter of the solubility enhancing composition volume, a cationic component comprising ammonium ions having a concentration from about 1.45 moles per liter to about 2.01 moles per liter of the solubility enhancing composition volume, and a hydrogen ion component in a concentration from about 17.38 to about 21.68 moles per liter of the total volume of the solubility enhancing composition;

a dilute sodium hydroxide solution having a concentration of about 5 percent to about 7.5 percent weight/weight of the total aqueous phase weight of the paper enhancing composition wherein the dilute sodium hydroxide solution has a concentration from about 20 percent to about 50 percent sodium hydroxide; and

silver sulfate having a concentration from about 0.001 percent to about 1.5 percent weight/weight of the total weight of the paper enhancing composition.

The paper enhancing composition of claim 1 further comprising at least one surfactant selected from the group consisting of non-ionic surfactant and anionic surfactant having a concentration from about 0.05 percent to about 0.15 percent weight/weight of the total aqueous phase weight of the paper enhancing composition.

3. The paper enhancing composition of claim 1 further comprising the addition of at least one acid or at least one base to adjust the final pH of the paper enhancing composition in a range from about pH 2.5 to about pH 3.5.

4. The paper enhancing composition of claim 2 further comprising the addition of at least one acid or at least one base to adjust the final pH of the paper enhancing composition in a range from about pH 2.5 to about pH 3.5.

5. The paper enhancing composition of claim 3 , wherein the paper enhancing composition is substantially free of solids.

6. The paper enhancing composition of claim 4 , wherein the paper enhancing composition is substantially free of solids.

7. The paper enhancing composition of claim 3 , wherein the paper enhancing composition is free of solids.

8. The paper enhancing composition of claim 4 , wherein the paper enhancing composition is free of solids.

9. A paper enhancing composition consisting of:

a solubility enhancing composition comprising an anionic component comprising sulfate ions, alone or in combination with bisulfate ions, having a concentration from about 8.00 moles per liter to about 13.00 moles per liter of the solubility enhancing composition volume, a cationic component comprising ammonium ions having a concentration from about 1.45 moles per liter to about 2.01 moles per liter of the solubility enhancing composition volume, and a hydrogen ion component in a concentration from about 17.38 to about 21.68 moles per liter of the total volume of the solubility enhancing composition;

a dilute sodium hydroxide solution having a concentration of about 5 percent to about 7.5 percent weight/weight of the total aqueous phase weight of the paper enhancing composition wherein the dilute sodium hydroxide solution has a concentration from about 20 percent to about 50 percent sodium hydroxide;

at least one surfactant selected from the group consisting of non-ionic surfactant and anionic surfactant having a concentration from about 0.05 percent to about 0.15 percent weight/weight of the total aqueous phase weight of the paper enhancing composition;

silver sulfate having a concentration from about 0.001 percent to about 1.5 percent weight/weight of the total weight of the paper enhancing composition; and

at least one acid or at least one base to adjust the final pH of the paper enhancing composition in a range from about pH 2.5 to about pH 3.5.

10. The paper enhancing composition of claim 9 , wherein the paper enhancing composition is substantially free of solids.

11. The paper enhancing composition of claim 9 , wherein the paper enhancing composition is free of solids.

12. A solubility enhancing aqueous composition comprising an anionic component comprising sulfate ions, alone or in combination with bisulfate ions, having a concentration from about 8.00 moles per liter to about 13.00 moles per liter of the solubility enhancing composition volume, a cationic component comprising ammonium ions having a concentration from about 1.45 moles per liter to about 2.01 moles per liter of the solubility enhancing composition volume, and a hydrogen ion component in a concentration from about 17.38 to about 21.68 moles per liter of the total volume of the solubility enhancing composition solution.
