Abstract

The invention relates to a device for use in the transcatheter treatment of mitral valve regurgitation, specifically a coaptation enhancement element for implantation across the valve; a system including the coaptation enhancement element and anchors for implantation; a system including the coaptation enhancement element, catheter and driver; and a method for transcatheter implantation of a coaptation element across a heart valve.

Claims (40)

1. A coaptation implant system comprising:

a coaptation implant comprising:

a coaptation surface configured for an anterior leaflet of a valve to coapt against;

a superior edge, lateral edges, and an inferior edge, wherein the coaptation implant is configured to overlie a posterior leaflet;

a hub; and

at least one strut; and

a helical anchor configured to be rotated relative to the hub,

wherein the coaptation implant is configured to remain within a blood flow path as the valve leaflets move back and forth.

2. The coaptation implant system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one strut is configured to maintain the shape of a portion of the coaptation implant.

3. The coaptation implant system of claim 1 , wherein the coaptation implant is relatively thin and elongate along the blood flow path.

4. The coaptation implant system of claim 1 , wherein the coaptation implant is configured to extend laterally across most of a width of an opening of the valve.

5. The coaptation implant system of claim 1 , wherein during diastole, the coaptation implant is configured to stay in substantially the same position, while movement of the anterior leaflet opens the valve.

6. The coaptation implant system of claim 1 , wherein during diastole, the coaptation implant is configured to permit a flow of blood from a left atrium to a left ventricle with minimal restriction.

7. The coaptation implant system of claim 1 , wherein a surface of the coaptation implant is configured to balloon or stretch during ventricular systole.

8. The coaptation implant system of claim 1 , wherein the coaptation implant is configured to enhance a seal between a surface of the coaptation implant and the anterior leaflet at a coaptation zone during systole.

9. The coaptation implant system of claim 1 , wherein during diastole, a surface of the coaptation implant is configured to return to an initial position in which the surface lies more distally.

10. The coaptation implant system of claim 1 , wherein the coaptation implant is configured to provide an improved blood flow path between an atrium and a ventricle during diastole, improving outflow from the atrium past the coaptation implant.

11. A coaptation implant system comprising:

a coaptation implant comprising:

a coaptation surface configured for an anterior leaflet of a valve to coapt against;

a superior edge, lateral edges, and an inferior edge, wherein the coaptation implant is configured to overlie a posterior leaflet;

a hub; and

at least one strut; and

a helical anchor configured to be rotated relative to the hub,

wherein a curve of the coaptation implant is configured to generally correspond to a posterior leaflet curve at or near the end of ventricular systole.

12. The coaptation implant system of claim 11 , wherein the coaptation implant is configured to correspond substantially to native anatomy when the coaptation implant is placed over the posterior leaflet.

13. The coaptation implant system of claim 11 , wherein the coaptation implant is configured to maintain relatively normal chamber size of a heart.

14. The coaptation implant system of claim 11 , wherein the coaptation implant is configured to maintain relatively normal chamber geometry of a heart.

15. The coaptation implant system of claim 11 , wherein the coaptation implant is configured to functionally replace the posterior leaflet by coapting with the anterior leaflet during a cardiac cycle.

16. The coaptation implant system of claim 11 , wherein the coaptation implant is configured to expand from a smaller profile to a larger profile to dimensions appropriate for placement in between the anterior leaflet and posterior leaflet.

17. A coaptation implant system comprising:

a coaptation implant comprising:

a coaptation surface configured for an anterior leaflet of a valve to coapt against;

a superior edge, lateral edges, and an inferior edge, wherein the coaptation implant is configured to overlie a posterior leaflet;

a hub; and

at least one strut; and

a helical anchor configured to be rotated relative to the hub,

wherein a curve of the coaptation implant changes over the course of a heart cycle.

18. The coaptation implant system of claim 17 , wherein the coaptation implant comprises a geometry configured to traverse the valve.

19. The coaptation implant system of claim 17 , wherein the coaptation implant is configured to effectively replace the posterior leaflet by coapting with the anterior leaflet during the heart cycle.
