Abstract

A hand vacuum cleaner has a cyclonic stage. A suction motor is provided in a housing. The housing has a first portion and a second portion wherein the second portion has a post-motor filter and the second portion is removably mounted to a first portion. The hand vac has a handle provided on the first portion of the housing. The sidewall of the second portion extends 360° around the cyclone axis of rotation and the suction motor axis of rotation, extends axially over the post-motor filter, forms part of an outer surface of the hand vacuum cleaner and comprises a rearmost removable sidewall portion of the hand vacuum cleaner body.

Claims (40)

1. A hand vacuum cleaner having an outer surface, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:

(a) an air flow passage extending from a dirty air inlet to a clear air outlet;

(b) a housing having a front end and a rear end spaced apart from the front end in a rearward direction, the housing comprising a first portion that houses a suction motor, which is positioned in the air flow passage, the suction motor having a suction motor axis of rotation;

(c) a cyclone unit positioned in the air flow passage upstream from the suction motor, the cyclone unit comprising a cyclone having a cyclone axis of rotation;

(d) the housing also comprising a second portion that is removably mounted to the first portion, the second portion comprising a sidewall and the clean air outlet, the second portion defining a post-motor filter chamber configured to contain a post-motor filter and the post-motor filter chamber has an outer perimeter, wherein each of the suction motor axis of rotation and the cyclone axis of rotation extends through a location radially inwardly of the outer perimeter of the post-motor filter chamber; and,

(e) a handle having a hand grip portion wherein an end of the handle is provided on a sidewall of the first portion, the handle remaining in position when the second portion of the housing is removed from the first portion of the housing,

wherein the sidewall of the second portion extends 360° around the cyclone axis of rotation and the suction motor axis of rotation, extends axially over the post-motor filter, forms part of an outer surface of the hand vacuum cleaner and comprises a rearmost removable sidewall portion of the hand vacuum cleaner body.

2. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the sidewall of the second portion extends to a rear end of the hand vacuum cleaner.

3. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the cyclone unit is provided at the front end of the hand vacuum cleaner and the suction motor axis of rotation intersects the cyclone unit.

4. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 3 wherein the cyclone unit has a front openable door.

5. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 4 wherein the font openable door opens a cyclone chamber and a dirt collection chamber that is exterior to the cyclone chamber.

The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 4 wherein the handle is provided on one side of the hand vacuum cleaner and the front openable door is pivotally mounted to a cyclone unit wall on a second side of the hand vacuum cleaner wherein the second side is opposed to the first side in a direction transverse to the cyclone axis of rotation.

7. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the clean air outlet is provided in the sidewall of the second portion whereby air exiting the clean air outlet travels in a direction transverse to the suction motor axis of rotation.

8. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the cyclone unit has a diameter in a direction transverse to the suction motor axis of rotation that is larger than a diameter of the second portion of the housing in the direction transverse to the suction motor axis of rotation.

9. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the second portion of the housing has a rear facing surface that is at a rearmost end of the hand vacuum cleaner.

10. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the suction motor axis of rotation and the cyclone axis of rotation are co-axial.

11. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein an enclosed finger receiving area is provided.

12. A hand vacuum cleaner having an outer surface, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:

(a) an air flow passage extending from a dirty air inlet to a clear air outlet;

(b) a housing having a front end and a rear end spaced apart from the front end in a rearward direction, the housing comprising a first portion that houses a suction motor, which is positioned in the air flow passage, the suction motor having a suction motor axis of rotation;

(c) a cyclone unit positioned in the air flow passage upstream from the suction motor, the cyclone unit comprising a cyclone having a cyclone axis of rotation and a front openable door;

(d) the housing also comprising a second portion that is removably mounted to the first portion, the second portion comprising a sidewall and the clean air outlet, the second portion defining a post-motor filter chamber configured to contain a post-motor filter and the post-motor filter chamber has an outer perimeter, wherein each of the suction motor axis of rotation and the cyclone axis of rotation extends through a location radially inwardly of the outer perimeter of the post-motor filter chamber; and,

(e) a handle having a hand grip portion wherein an end of the handle is provided on a sidewall of the first portion, the handle remaining in position when the second portion of the housing is removed from the first portion of the housing,

wherein the sidewall of the second portion extends axially over the post-motor filter and forms part of an outer surface of the hand vacuum cleaner, and

wherein the sidewall of the second portion extends to a rear end of the hand vacuum cleaner.

13. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 12 wherein the font openable door opens a cyclone chamber and a dirt collection chamber that is exterior to the cyclone chamber.

The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 12 wherein the handle is provided on one side of the hand vacuum cleaner and the front openable door is pivotally mounted to a cyclone unit wall on a second side of the hand vacuum cleaner wherein the second side is opposed to the first side in a direction transverse to the cyclone axis of rotation.

15. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 12 wherein the cyclone unit has a diameter in a direction transverse to the suction motor axis of rotation that is larger than a diameter of the second portion of the housing in the direction transverse to the suction motor axis of rotation.

16. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 12 wherein the second portion of the housing has a rear facing surface that is at a rearmost end of the hand vacuum cleaner.

17. A hand vacuum cleaner having an outer surface, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:

(a) an air flow passage extending from a dirty air inlet to a clear air outlet;

(b) a housing having a front end and a rear end spaced apart from the front end in a rearward direction, the housing comprising a first portion that houses a suction motor, which is positioned in the air flow passage, the suction motor having a suction motor axis of rotation;

(c) a cyclone unit positioned in the air flow passage upstream from the suction motor, the cyclone unit comprising a cyclone having a cyclone axis of rotation and a front openable door;

(d) the housing also comprising a second portion that is removably mounted to the first portion, the second portion comprising a sidewall and the clean air outlet, the second portion defining a post-motor filter chamber configured to contain a post-motor filter and the post-motor filter chamber has an outer perimeter, wherein each of the suction motor axis of rotation and the cyclone axis of rotation extends through a location radially inwardly of the outer perimeter of the post-motor filter chamber; and,

(e) a handle having a hand grip portion wherein an end of the handle is provided on a sidewall of the first portion, the handle remaining in position when the second portion of the housing is removed from the first portion of the housing,

wherein the sidewall of the second portion extends axially over the post-motor filter and forms part of an outer surface of the hand vacuum cleaner, and

wherein the handle is provided on one side of the hand vacuum cleaner and the front openable door is pivotally mounted to a cyclone unit wall on a second side of the hand vacuum cleaner wherein the second side is opposed to the first side in a direction transverse to the cyclone axis of rotation.

18. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 17 wherein the font openable door opens a cyclone chamber and a dirt collection chamber that is exterior to the cyclone chamber.

19. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 17 wherein the cyclone unit has a diameter in a direction transverse to the suction motor axis of rotation that is larger than a diameter of the second portion of the housing in the direction transverse to the suction motor axis of rotation.

20. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 17 wherein the second portion of the housing has a rear facing surface that is at a rearmost end of the hand vacuum cleaner.
