Abstract

An example implementation may involve a group of wearable playback devices including a first wearable playback device and a second wearable playback device. The wearable playback devices render multi-channel audio content according to particular playback responsibilities in the group. When a failure or other issue with the second wearable playback device occurs, the first playback device assumes at least part of the playback responsibility of the second playback device.

Claims (62)

1. A system comprising:

a first wearable playback device;

a second wearable playback device;

at least one processor; and

data storage including instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

receive, from a non-wearable playback device over a wireless network, data representing audio channels of a video being played back on a television that is connected to the non-wearable playback device;

play back the audio channels as a bonded pair, wherein, during playback of the audio channels as the bonded pair, the first wearable playback device is configured to render one or more first audio channels and the second wearable playback device is configured to render one or more second audio channels;

during playback of the audio channels, monitor the first wearable playback device and the second wearable playback device for a state corresponding to an inability of the bonded pair to continue rendering the audio channels; and

based on detection of the state, perform a recovery that modifies playback of the audio channels by the bonded pair.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to perform the recovery that modifies playback of the audio channels by the bonded pair comprise instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

pause playback of the audio channels by the bonded pair.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to perform the recovery that modifies playback of the audio channels by the bonded pair comprise instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

mute playback of the audio channels by the bonded pair.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to perform the recovery that modifies playback of the audio channels by the bonded pair comprise instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

switch playback of the audio channels from the bonded pair to the non-wearable playback device.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to perform the recovery that modifies playback of the audio channels by the bonded pair comprise instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

switch playback of the audio channels from the bonded pair to the first wearable playback device.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is further configured to:

cause a control device to display a notification of the detected state.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the bonded pair is a stereo configuration,

the audio channels comprise stereo audio content, and

the one or more first audio channels comprise a left channel of the stereo audio content and the one or more second audio channels comprise a right channel of the stereo audio content.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the bonded pair is a surround sound configuration, and

the audio channels comprise surround audio content.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein one of the first wearable playback device and the second wearable playback device is configured to operate as a coordinator of the bonded pair, and wherein the coordinator distributes timing information to the other wearable playback device of the bonded pair.

10. A first wearable playback device of a system comprising the first wearable playback device and a second wearable playback device, the first wearable playback device comprising:

a network interface;

an audio transducer;

at least one processor;

a housing, the housing carrying at least the network interface, the audio transducer, the at least one processor, and data storage including instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the first wearable playback device is configured to:

receive, from a non-wearable playback device over a wireless network, data representing audio channels of a video being played back on a television that is connected to the non-wearable playback device;

play back the audio channels as a bonded pair, wherein, during playback of the audio channels as the bonded pair, the first wearable playback device is configured to render one or more first audio channels and the second wearable playback device is configured to render one or more second audio channels;

during playback of the audio channels, monitor the first wearable playback device and the second wearable playback device for a state corresponding to an inability of the bonded pair to continue rendering the audio channels; and

based on detection of the state, perform a recovery that modifies playback of the audio channels by the bonded pair.

11. The first wearable playback device of claim 10 , wherein the instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to perform the recovery that modifies playback of the audio channels by the bonded pair comprise instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

pause playback of the audio channels by the bonded pair.

12. The first wearable playback device of claim 10 , wherein the instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to perform the recovery that modifies playback of the audio channels by the bonded pair comprise instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

mute playback of the audio channels by the bonded pair.

13. The first wearable playback device of claim 10 , wherein the instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to perform the recovery that modifies playback of the audio channels by the bonded pair comprise instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

switch playback of the audio channels from the bonded pair to the non-wearable playback device.

14. The first wearable playback device of claim 10 , wherein the instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to perform the recovery that modifies playback of the audio channels by the bonded pair comprise instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

switch playback of the audio channels from the bonded pair to the first wearable playback device.

15. The first wearable playback device of claim 10 , wherein the instructions are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is further configured to:
