Abstract

Claims (28)

1. A power pack for use with a surgical instrument, the power pack comprising:

a housing including at least one connector configured to facilitate attachment of the power pack to the surgical instrument;

a plurality of rechargeable battery cells located in the housing and configured to power the surgical instrument; and

an electronic control circuit located in the housing and configured to assess whether a subset of the plurality of rechargeable battery cells is damaged during a firing sequence of the surgical instrument and, in response to a determination that the subset of the plurality of rechargeable battery cells is damaged, step up an output voltage of the power pack to complete the firing sequence.

2. The power pack of claim 1 , wherein the electronic control circuit includes a boost converter and the electronic circuit is configured to employ the boost converter to step up the output voltage of the power pack to complete the firing sequence in response to the determination that a subset of the plurality of rechargeable battery cells is damaged.

3. The power pack of claim 1 , wherein the electronic control circuit includes a memory and the electronic control circuit is configured to store a damaged status of the power pack in the memory in response to a determination that a subset of the plurality of rechargeable battery cells is damaged.

4. The power pack of claim 3 , wherein the damaged status is cleared after the damaged subset of the plurality of rechargeable battery cells is replaced with undamaged battery cells.

5. The power pack of claim 1 , wherein the electronic control circuit is configured to deactivate the surgical instrument after completion of the firing sequence in response to a determination that a subset of the plurality of rechargeable battery cells is damaged.

6. The power pack of claim 5 , wherein the electronic control circuit is configured to reactivate the surgical instrument after replacing the power pack with an undamaged power pack.

7. The power pack of claim 1 , wherein the electronic control circuit includes a feedback indicator and the electronic circuit is configured to employ the feedback indicator to issue an alert in response to a determination that a subset of the plurality of rechargeable battery cells is damaged.

8. A power pack for use with a surgical instrument, the power pack comprising:

a housing configured to be attached to the surgical instrument;

a battery pack located in the housing and comprising a plurality of battery cells configured to provide an output voltage to the surgical instrument to power the surgical instrument; and

an electronic control circuit located in the housing and including (i) a sensor configured to detect a parameter associated with the plurality of battery cells and (ii) a processor configured to determine, during a firing sequence of the surgical instrument, whether a battery cell of the plurality of battery cells is damaged based on the parameter detected by the sensor and step up the output voltage of the battery pack in response to a determination that the battery cell is damaged.

9. The power pack of claim 8 , wherein the electronic control circuit further includes a boost converter, and

wherein the processor is configured to control the boost converter to step up the output voltage of the battery pack in response to the determination that the battery cell is damaged.

10. The power pack of claim 8 , wherein the electronic control circuit further includes a memory, and

wherein the processor is configured to store to a damaged status of the power pack in the memory in response to a determination that the battery cell is damaged.

11. The power pack of claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to clear the damaged status from the memory in response to a determination that the batter cell has been replaced with an undamaged battery cell.

12. The power pack of claim 8 , wherein the electronic control circuit is configured to deactivate the surgical instrument after completion of the firing sequence in response to the determination the battery cell is damaged.

13. The power pack of claim 12 , wherein the electronic control circuit is further configured to reactivate the surgical instrument in response to a determination that the battery cell has been replaced with an undamaged battery cell.

14. The power pack of claim 8 , wherein the electronic control circuit further includes a feedback system,

wherein the processor is configured to control the feedback system to issue an alert in response to the determination the battery cell is damaged.

15. The power pack of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of battery cells comprise a plurality of rechargeable battery cells.

16. The power pack of claim 15 , wherein each of the rechargeable battery cells are individually replaceable.

17. The power pack of claim 15 , wherein each of the rechargeable battery cells is individually removable from the battery back and configured for individual recharging.

18. The power pack of claim 8 , wherein the housing includes at least one connector configured to secure the power pack to the surgical instrument.

19. The power pack of claim 18 , wherein the at least one connector comprises a resilient member.
