Abstract

In one aspect, the dual bevel needle can include a hollow tube having a proximal end, a distal end, a first lateral side, and a second lateral side opposite the first lateral side; a first needle point at the distal end of the hollow tube; a second point at the distal end of the hollow tube; a first bevel on each of the first lateral side and the second lateral side, the first bevel comprising a first bevel angle relative to a longitudinal axis of the tube; and a second bevel on each of the first lateral side and the second lateral side, the second bevel having a second bevel angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the tube, wherein the first and second bevels each form a portion of an ellipse, the ellipse having an inner cutting edge and terminating in the first and second needle points at the distal end of the tube, the second bevel angle being shallower than the first bevel angle, the second bevel being located adjacent the proximal end of the first bevel, and the inner cutting edge converging to a narrow heel.

Claims (52)

1. A device for obtaining biological tissue comprising:

a two-dimensional array of hollow tubes comprising:

a first row of a plurality of hollow tubes;

a second row of a plurality of hollow tubes, adjacent the first row of hollow tubes;

a third row of a plurality of hollow tubes, adjacent the second row of hollow tubes;

wherein each hollow tube comprises at least one point at a distal end of the hollow tube;

wherein an inner diameter of at least one hollow tube of the array of hollow tubes is less than about 1 mm, the distal end of each of the hollow tubes is configured to be inserted into a biological tissue donor site to remove a portion of tissue therefrom when each of the hollow tubes is withdrawn from the donor site,

wherein the device is configured to individually actuate each of the first, second, and third rows to insert the hollow tubes of the respective row into the biological tissue donor site;

further comprising a solenoid configured to actuate the first row of a plurality of hollow tubes, the second row of a plurality of hollow tubes, and the third row of a plurality of hollow tubes; and

wherein the solenoid is configured to move in a first direction and further comprising an actuator that moves in a second direction perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of a needle of the array of hollow tubes.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the array comprises a circle.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the area of the circle comprises about one square inch;

wherein the donor site comprises an area of about one square inch; or

wherein the tissue withdrawn from the donor site comprises about 0.1 square inches.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the array of hollow tubes comprises about 300 hollow tubes.

5. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of pins, each of the pins provided within a central lumen of each of the hollow tubes.

6. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a stop to limit a depth of insertion of each of the hollow tubes in the array of hollow tubes into the biological tissue donor site.

7. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a spring, wherein the spring actuates the array of hollow tubes to insert the array of hollow tubes into the biological tissue donor site.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the solenoid further comprises a first solenoid, wherein the first solenoid actuates the first row of hollow tubes; or

a second solenoid, wherein the second solenoid actuates in a direction opposite the first solenoid.

9. The device of claim 1 , comprising a force sensor, wherein the force sensor senses the force with which the device is applied to the biological tissue donor site.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein each hollow tube comprises two points at the distal end of the hollow tube;

wherein each hollow tube comprises two points at the distal end of the hollow tube, wherein each hollow tube comprises a narrow heel positioned between the two points; or

wherein each hollow tube comprises a narrow heel positioned between the two points of the distal end of the hollow tube, the narrow heel comprises less than about 10% of the inner diameter of the hollow tube.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one hollow tube has an inner diameter of less than about 0.8 mm; or

wherein the biological tissue comprises skin tissue and adipose tissue.

12. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a housing, which is disposed around the two-dimensional array of hollow tubes and which is configured to stabilize the biological tissue donor site.

13. A device for harvesting biological tissue, the device comprising:

an array of hollow tubes comprising:

a first group of hollow tubes;

a second group of hollow tubes; and

a third group of hollow tubes;

wherein the first group of hollow tubes, the second group of hollow tubes, and the third group of hollow tubes are configured to independently actuate;

wherein each hollow tube of the first group of hollow tubes, the second group of hollow tubes, and the third group of hollow tubes is configured to core the biological tissue and has an inner width that is less than about 1 mm;

further comprising a solenoid configured to actuate the first group of hollow tubes, the second group of hollow tubes, and the third group of hollow tubes; and

wherein the solenoid is configured to move in a first direction and further comprising an actuator that moves in a second direction perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of a needle of the array of hollow tubes.

14. The device of claim 13 , wherein the device is configured to individually actuate the first group of hollow needles, the second group of hollow needles, and the third group of hollow needles into the biological tissue; and further comprising:

a housing surrounding the array of hollow tubes, the housing including a projection that is configured to stabilize the biological tissue before or during harvesting.

15. The device of claim 13 , wherein the first group of hollow needles is a first row of hollow needles;

wherein the second group of hollow needles is a second row of hollow needles;

wherein the third group of hollow needles is a third row of hollow needles; and

wherein each hollow tube of the first group of hollow tubes, the second group of hollow tubes, and the third group of hollow tubes includes:
