Abstract

Headgear, comprising at least one strap; and at least one rigidizer, the headgear being arranged to position one of the at least one strap and one of the at least one rigidizer, with regard to one another such that the rigidizer imparts a desired shape to at least a portion of the strap while allowing said portion of the strap to move relative to the rigidizer.

Claims (68)

1. A patient interface system for providing pressurized breathable gas to a patient's airways to treat sleep disordered breathing, the patient interface system comprising:

a mask comprising:

a cushion; and

a mask frame;

headgear to retain a mask on a patient's face to provide pressurized breathable gas to a patient's airways to treat sleep disordered breathing, the headgear comprising:

a first rigidizer and a second rigidizer, each of the first rigidizer and the second rigidizer having a free end, and each of the first rigidizer and the second rigidizer having a curvature that substantially conforms to a corresponding portion of the patient's face in use; and

a strap having a back portion, a first side portion joined to the back portion, and a second side portion joined to the back portion, the first side portion and the second side portion each being tubular in shape, and the strap being constructed from a textile,

wherein the first rigidizer extends inside of the first side portion of the strap such that the free end of the first rigidizer is enclosed within the first side portion of the strap,

wherein the second rigidizer extends inside of the second side portion of the strap such that the free end of the second rigidizer is enclosed within the second side portion of the strap, and

wherein the first side portion and the second side portion are flexible such that the first rigidizer substantially imparts its curvature upon the first side portion of the strap and the second rigidizer substantially imparts its curvature upon the second side portion of the strap.

2. The patient interface system of claim 1 , wherein the textile of the strap includes an elastic material such that the first side portion and the second side portion are stretchable relative to the first rigidizer and the second rigidizer, respectively.

3. The patient interface system of claim 2 , wherein the elastic material is elastane.

4. The patient interface system of claim 1 , wherein the textile is woven.

5. The patient interface system of claim 1 , wherein the strap has a first free end on the first side portion and a second free end on the second side portion.

6. The patient interface system of claim 5 , wherein the first free end engages the first rigidizer to connect the first side portion to the first rigidizer and the second free end engages the second rigidizer to connect the second side portion to the second rigidizer.

7. The patient interface system of claim 5 , wherein the first side portion and the second side portion each has an opening, and

wherein the opening of the first side portion is closer to the first free end of the strap than the back portion and the opening of the second side portion is closer to the second free end of the strap than the back portion.

8. The patient interface system of claim 5 , wherein the strap further comprises a pocket proximal to each of the first free end and the second free end that engages a corresponding of the first rigidizer and the second rigidizer.

9. The patient interface system of claim 1 , wherein the free end of each of the first rigidizer and the second rigidizer is opposite the mask when the headgear is connected to the mask.

10. The patient interface system of claim 1 , wherein the first side portion of the strap is freely movable relative to the free end of the first rigidizer, and

wherein the second side portion of the strap is freely movable relative to the free end of the second rigidizer.

11. The patient interface system of claim 1 , wherein the back portion is bifurcated to form a first back strap portion and a second back strap portion.

12. The patient interface system of claim 11 , wherein a distance between the first back strap portion and the second back strap portion is adjustable.

13. The patient interface system of claim 1 , wherein each of the first rigidizer and the second rigidizer has a length dimension, a width dimension, and a thickness dimension, the length dimension and the width dimension being greater than the thickness dimension.

14. The patient interface system of claim 1 , wherein the strap is length-adjustable only by stretching.

15. The patient interface system of claim 1 , further comprising a sliding mechanism to allow the strap to be overlapped to a different extent to change an overall length of the headgear.

16. The patient interface system of claim 1 , wherein the back portion is tubular in shape.

17. The patient interface system of claim 1 , wherein the cushion is a nasal cushion, a full-face cushion, or nasal prongs.

18. The patient interface system of claim 1 , further comprising a tube having a first end connected to the mask frame and a second end configured to be connected to a source of the pressurized breathable gas.

19. The patient interface system of claim 1 , further comprising a tube having a first end connected to the mask frame and a second end configured to be connected to a source of the pressurized breathable gas,

wherein:

the cushion is a nasal cushion, a full-face cushion, or nasal prongs,

the textile of the strap includes an elastic material such that the first side portion and the second side portion are stretchable relative to the first rigidizer and the second rigidizer, respectively,

the textile is woven,

the first side portion of the strap is freely movable relative to the free end of the first rigidizer,

the second side portion of the strap is freely movable relative to the free end of the second rigidizer,

the back portion is bifurcated to form a first back strap portion and a second back strap portion, and

a distance between the first back strap portion and the second back strap portion is adjustable.

20. Headgear to retain a mask on a patient's face to provide pressurized breathable gas to a patient's airways to treat sleep disordered breathing, the headgear comprising:

a first rigidizer and a second rigidizer, each of the first rigidizer and the second rigidizer having a free end, and each of the first rigidizer and the second rigidizer having a curvature that substantially conforms to a corresponding portion of the patient's face in use; and

a strap having a back portion, a first side portion joined to the back portion, and a second side portion joined to the back portion, the first side portion and the second side portion each being tubular in shape, and the strap being constructed from a textile,

wherein the first rigidizer extends inside of the first side portion of the strap such that the free end of the first rigidizer is enclosed within the first side portion of the strap,

wherein the second rigidizer extends inside of the second side portion of the strap such that the free end of the second rigidizer is enclosed within the second side portion of the strap, and

wherein the first side portion and the second side portion are flexible such that the first rigidizer substantially imparts its curvature upon the first side portion of the strap and the second rigidizer substantially imparts its curvature upon the second side portion of the strap.

21. The headgear of claim 20 , wherein the textile of the strap includes an elastic material such that the first side portion and the second side portion are stretchable relative to the first rigidizer and the second rigidizer, respectively.

22. The headgear of claim 21 , wherein the elastic material is elastane.

23. The headgear of claim 20 , wherein the textile is woven.

24. The headgear of claim 20 , wherein the strap has a first free end on the first side portion and a second free end on the second side portion.

25. The headgear of claim 24 , wherein the first free end engages the first rigidizer to connect the first side portion to the first rigidizer and the second free end engages the second rigidizer to connect the second side portion to the second rigidizer.

26. The headgear of claim 24 , wherein the first side portion and the second side portion each has an opening, and

wherein the opening of the first side portion is closer to the first free end of the strap than the back portion and the opening of the second side portion is closer to the second free end of the strap than the back portion.

27. The headgear of claim 24 , wherein the strap further comprises a pocket proximal to each of the first free end and the second free end that engages a corresponding of the first rigidizer and the second rigidizer.

28. The headgear of claim 20 , wherein the free end of each of the first rigidizer and the second rigidizer is opposite the mask when the headgear is connected to the mask.

29. The headgear of claim 20 , wherein the first side portion of the strap is freely movable relative to the free end of the first rigidizer, and

wherein the second side portion of the strap is freely movable relative to the free end of the second rigidizer.

30. The headgear of claim 20 , wherein the back portion is bifurcated to form a first back strap portion and a second back strap portion.

31. The headgear of claim 30 , wherein a distance between the first back strap portion and the second back strap portion is adjustable.

32. The headgear of claim 20 , wherein each of the first rigidizer and the second rigidizer has a length dimension, a width dimension, and a thickness dimension, the length dimension and the width dimension being greater than the thickness dimension.

33. The headgear of claim 20 , wherein the strap is length-adjustable only by stretching.

34. The headgear of claim 20 , further comprising a sliding mechanism to allow the strap to be overlapped to a different extent to change an overall length of the headgear.

35. The headgear of claim 20 , wherein the back portion is tubular in shape.

36. The headgear of claim 20 , wherein:

the textile of the strap includes an elastic material such that the first side portion and the second side portion are stretchable relative to the first rigidizer and the second rigidizer, respectively,

the textile is woven,

the first side portion of the strap is freely movable relative to the free end of the first rigidizer,

the second side portion of the strap is freely movable relative to the free end of the second rigidizer,

the back portion is bifurcated to form a first back strap portion and a second back strap portion, and

a distance between the first back strap portion and the second back strap portion is adjustable.
