Abstract

Systems and methods for the intravascular treatment of clot material within a blood vessel of a human patient are disclosed herein. A method in accordance with embodiments of the present technology can include, for example, positioning a distal portion of a catheter proximate to the clot material within the blood vessel. The method can further include coupling a pressure source to the catheter via a tubing subsystem including a valve or other fluid control device and, while the valve is closed, activating the pressure source to charge a vacuum. The valve can then be opened to apply the vacuum to the catheter to thereby aspirate at least a portion of the clot material from the blood vessel and into the catheter.

Claims (38)

1. A method for the treatment of clot material within a vasculature of a patient, the method comprising

positioning a first catheter at least partially within the vasculature proximate to the clot material;

aspirating, via an aspiration source, at least a portion of the clot material and blood through the first catheter and into a clot container coupled to the first catheter, wherein the clot container includes a filter configured to filter the portion of the clot material from the blood to produce filtered blood;

fluidically coupling a pressure source to the clot container;

activating the pressure source to draw the filtered blood into the clot container;

fluidically decoupling the pressure source from the clot container;

coupling the pressure source to a second catheter at least partially positioned within the vasculature; and

driving the filtered blood from the pressure source through the second catheter into the vasculature.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the method further comprises fluidically decoupling the clot container from the first catheter before activating the pressure source to draw the filtered blood into the pressure source.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the method further comprises fluidically decoupling the clot container from the aspiration source before activating the pressure source to draw the filtered blood into the pressure source.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the method further comprises allowing a pressure within the clot canister to equalize before activating the pressure source.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the pressure source is a syringe.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein activating the pressure source includes withdrawing a plunger of the syringe to pull the filtered blood into a barrel of the syringe.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein driving the filtered blood from the pressure source includes depressing the plunger of the syringe to push the filtered blood through the second catheter into the vasculature.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the first catheter is the same as the second catheter.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the method further comprises:

removing the filter from within the clot container; and

clearing the portion of the clot material from within the clot container.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the method further comprises selectively providing fluid access to a lumen of the first catheter via a hemostasis valve fluidly coupled to the first catheter.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein selectively providing fluid access to the lumen of the first catheter includes decreasing a tension on a filament of the hemostasis valve to provide fluidic access to the lumen of the first catheter and increasing the tension on the filament to inhibit fluidic access to the lumen of the first catheter.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein decreasing the tension on the filament includes depressing a button of the hemostasis valve.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein the hemostasis valve is fluidly coupled to a proximal end portion of the first catheter, and wherein the clot container is fluidly coupled to the lumen of the first catheter via a tube branching from the first catheter distal to the proximal end portion of the first catheter.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the aspiration source is an electric pump.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the clot canister has a first volume, and wherein the aspiration source has a second volume greater than the first volume.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein the clot container is fluidically coupled to the first catheter via a fluid control device, wherein (a) opening of the fluid control device fluidically connects the clot container to the first catheter and (b) closing of the fluid control device fluidically disconnects the clot container from the first catheter, and wherein aspirating the portion of the clot material and the blood through the first catheter and into the clot container includes:

generating, via the aspiration source, a vacuum in the clot container while the fluid control device is closed; and

opening the fluid control device to apply the vacuum to the first catheter to thereby aspirate the portion of the clot material and the blood through the first catheter and into the clot container.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the fluid control device is a user-actuatable valve.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the valve comprises a lever, and wherein opening the valve includes pushing the lever.

19. The method of claim 16 wherein the method further comprises closing the fluid control device before activating the pressure source.

20. A method for the treatment of clot material within a vasculature of a patient, the method comprising

positioning a first catheter at least partially within the vasculature proximate to the clot material;

aspirating, via an aspiration source, at least a portion of the clot material and blood through the first catheter and into a first container coupled to the first catheter, wherein the first container includes a filter configured to filter the portion of the clot material from the blood to produce filtered blood;

fluidically coupling a second container to the first container;

activating the first container and/or the second container to drive the filtered blood into the second container;

fluidically decoupling the second container from the first container;

coupling the second container to a second catheter at least partially positioned within the vasculature; and

driving the filtered blood from the second container through the second catheter into the vasculature.
