Abstract

A computer-assisted device includes a first repositionable arm configured to support a first end effector, a second repositionable arm configured to support a second end effector, and a control unit. The control unit configured to monitor an actual motion of at least one structure selected from the group consisting of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector; determine a deviation between the actual motion and a desired motion of the at least one structure; and in response to determining that the deviation is greater than a deviation threshold, select whether to halt motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector or the second repositionable arm and the second end effector based on a mode of operation of the first repositionable arm the first end effector, the second repositionable arm, or a mode of operation of the second end effector.

determine, for each kinematic or dynamic value in a plurality of kinematic or dynamic values associated with the at least one structure, a difference between an actual value and a corresponding desired value to generate a combined set of variation values; and

determine, from the combined set of variation values, the deviation.

6. The computer-assisted device of claim 1 , wherein:

the deviation comprises a deviation in a plurality of kinematic or dynamic values associated with the at least one structure;

the deviation threshold comprises a vector or matrix of threshold elements; and

to determine that the deviation is greater than the deviation threshold, the control unit is configured to determine that:

a first value of the plurality of kinematic or dynamic values is greater than a corresponding threshold element in the vector or matrix of threshold elements; or

a weighted combination of the plurality of kinematic or dynamic values is greater than a weighted combination of the threshold elements in the vector or matrix of threshold elements.

7. The computer-assisted device of claim 6 , wherein first weights for position and rotation values in the plurality of kinematic or dynamic values is higher than second weights for velocity, force, or torque values in the plurality of kinematic or dynamic values.

The computer-assisted device of claim 1 , wherein the control unit is further configured to determine the deviation threshold based on a type of the desired motion or at least one mode of operation selected from the group consisting of: a mode of operation of the first end effector and a mode of operation of the computer-assisted device.

10. The computer-assisted device of claim 1 , wherein the control unit is further configured to determine the deviation threshold so that the deviation threshold is larger than deviations between the actual motion of the at least one structure and the desired motion of the at least one structure due to one or more of calibration errors, manufacturing variations in the at least one structure, vibrations in the at least one structure, or motions of a patient on which a procedure is being performed using the computer-assisted device.

12. The computer-assisted device of claim 1 , wherein the control unit is further configured to clear a condition that caused the deviation to be greater than the deviation threshold.

13. A method comprising:

monitoring, by a control unit of a computer-assisted device, an actual motion of at least one structure, the at least one structure selected from the group consisting of: a first repositionable arm of the computer-assisted device and a first end effector configured to be supported by the first repositionable arm;
