Abstract

A method and apparatus of automatically locating in an image of a blood vessel the lumen boundary at a position in the vessel and from that measuring the diameter of the vessel. From the diameter of the vessel and estimated blood flow rate, a number of clinically significant physiological parameters are then determined and various user displays of interest generated. One use of these images and parameters is to aid the clinician in the placement of a stent. The system, in one embodiment, uses these measurements to allow the clinician to simulate the placement of a stent and to determine the effect of the placement. In addition, from these patient parameters various patient treatments are then performed.

Claims (49)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, by one or more processors, vessel data including image data for a vessel;

determining, by the one or more processors based on the vessel data, a plurality of vessel diameter values for at least a portion of the vessel;

determining, by the one or more processors based on the vessel data, a minimum lumen area (MLA) from a set of area values calculated at positions along at least the portion of the vessel;

providing for output, by the one or more processors, a first panel comprising a first axis, a second axis and a two-dimensional representation of at least the portion of the vessel,

wherein the first axis corresponds to at least one of the plurality of determined vessel diameter values and the second axis corresponds to a positions along at least the portion of the vessel;

providing for output, by the one or more processors, a vessel diameter value of the plurality of determined vessel diameter values for a user selected frame relative to the two-dimensional representation of at least the portion of the vessel; and

providing for output, by the one or more processors, the MLA relative to at least the portion of the vessel to guide stent planning or stenosis assessment.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying, by the one or more processors, a branch of at least the portion of the vessel; and

providing for output, by the one or more processors, an indication of the branch relative to the two-dimensional representation.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of determined vessel diameter values comprise a plurality of mean diameter values.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of determined vessel diameter values are used to determine the MLA for at least the portion of the vessel.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing for output, by the one or more processors, a second panel comprising a first cross-sectional view of a position along at least the portion of the vessel.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of determined vessel diameter values are mean diameter values or measured diameter values.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein a respective mean diameter value at an axial cross-section along at least the portion of the vessel corresponds to a diameter of a circle with an area corresponding to the axial cross-section or a mean of chord lengths at all angles drawn through a centroid of the axial cross-section.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating, by the one or more processors, the two-dimensional representation based on the plurality of determined vessel diameter values.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing for output, by the one or more processors, a proximal reference and a distal reference on the two-dimensional representation.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising providing for output, by the one or more processors, a proximal diameter value for the proximal reference and a distal diameter value for the distal reference, wherein the proximal diameter value is one of the plurality of determined vessel diameter values and the distal diameter value is another one of the plurality of determined vessel diameter values.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein determining the MLA further comprises:

when at least the portion of the vessel is a subsection of the portion of the vessel between the proximal reference and the distal reference; and

the method further comprising:

providing for output, by the one or more processors, the MLA for the subsection of at least the portion of the vessel.

12. A system, comprising:

one or more processors, the one or more processors configured to:

receive vessel data including image data for a vessel;

determine, based on the vessel data, a plurality of vessel diameter values for at least a portion of the vessel;

determine, based on the vessel data, a minimum lumen area (MLA) from a set of area values calculated at positions along at least the portion of the vessel;

provide for output a first panel comprising a first axis, a second axis and a two-dimensional representation of at least the portion of the vessel,

wherein the first axis corresponds to at least one of the plurality of determined vessel diameter values and the second axis corresponds to positions along at least the portion of the vessel;

provide for output a vessel diameter value of the plurality of determined vessel diameter values for a user selected frame relative to the representation of at least the portion of the vessel; and

provide the MLA relative to at least the portion of the vessel to guide stent planning or stenosis assessment.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

identify a branch of at least the portion of the vessel; and

provide for output an indication of the branch relative to the two-dimensional representation.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of determined vessel diameter values comprises a plurality of mean diameter values.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of determined vessel diameter values are used to determine the MLA for at least the portion of the vessel.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to provide for output a second panel comprising a first cross-sectional view of a position along at least the portion of the vessel.

17. The system of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of determined vessel diameter values are mean diameter values or measured diameter values.
