Abstract

An underlayment layer is configured to support an artificial turf assembly. The underlayment layer comprises a core with a top side and a bottom side. The top side has a plurality of spaced apart, upwardly oriented projections that define channels suitable for fluid flow along the top side of the core when the underlayment layer is positioned beneath an overlying artificial turf assembly.

Claims (19)

1. An artificial turf system comprising:

an artificial turf layer including a turf carpet having a plurality of artificial turf grass blades extending from a turf backing; and

a turf underlayment layer comprising an assembly of panels, the panels having a top side and a bottom side, the top side of the panel contacting the turf backing and including channels that extend laterally along at least a portion of the top side of the panel, the bottom side of the panel having channels that extend laterally along at least a portion of the bottom side of the panel, and a plurality of drain holes that are in fluid communication between the top side channels and the bottom side channels, the panels being made from a plurality of expanded, closed-cell polyolefin beads bonded together by at least one of pressure and heat to form a substantially water-impervious surface, the panels each having at least one edge defining an interlock configured to prevent panel separation during installation and permit relative panel movement in response to one of thermal expansion or load-applied deflections.

2. The artificial turf system of claim 1 wherein the panels further comprise a core in between the top side and the bottom side.

3. The artificial turf system of claim 2 wherein the plurality of drain holes extend through the core.

4. The artificial turf system of claim 3 wherein the top side channels extend from the top side into the core and define projections creating a substantially planar top face of the top side.

5. The artificial turf system of claim 3 wherein the bottom side channels extend from the bottom side into the core and define projections creating a substantially planar bottom face of the bottom side.

6. The artificial turf system of claim 4 wherein the substantially planar top face contacts the turf backing.

7. The artificial turf system of claim 5 where in the substantially planar bottom face contacts a substrate.

8. The artificial turf system of claim 1 wherein the panels include one or more edge projections to create a gap between abutting panels.

9. The artificial turf system of claim 1 wherein the panels have a material density range of between 45 grams per liter and 70 grams per liter.

10. The artificial turf system of claim 1 where in the panels have a material density range of between 50 grams per liter and 60 grams per liter.

11. The artificial turf system of claim 1 wherein the top side includes a friction enhancing surface configured to provide an increased frictional engagement between the turf backing and the turf underlayment layer.

12. An artificial turf system comprising:

an artificial turf layer including a turf carpet; and

a turf underlayment layer formed by an assembly of panels, the panels each comprising:

a top side having one of a plurality of projections or a plurality of drainage channels, the top side supporting the turf carpet;

a bottom side contacting a substrate; and

a core having a plurality of drain holes forming a fluid communication path between the top side and the bottom side, the drain holes cooperating with at least the top side to drain water at a rate of up to 70 millimeters per hour toward the substrate; wherein the panels are formed from a plurality of expanded, closed-cell polyolefin beads bonded together by at least one of pressure and heat to form a substantially water-impervious surface, the expanded, closed-cell polyolefin beads having a density in a range of about 45 grams per liter to about 70 grams per liter and having a vertical ball rebound in a range of about 60 millimeters to about 100 millimeters when tested under a European Vertical Ball Behavior test number EN12235.
