Abstract

A tandem seal adapter for connecting first and second wellbore tools includes a body portion. The body portion has a first seal at a first end portion thereof, and a second seal at a second end portion thereof. The body portion includes a maximum outer diameter that is less than a maximum inner diameter of a mating portion of the first or second wellbore tool.

Claims (34)

1. A tandem seal adapter (TSA) for connecting a first wellbore tool and a second wellbore tool, the TSA comprising:

a body portion including a first and second end, the body portion including an outer surface extending between the first end and the second end, the outer surface including:

a first threaded portion configured to engage a first screw thread of a first mating portion of the first wellbore tool,

a first sealing portion surrounding the outer surface and configured to create a first seal with the first wellbore tool,

a second threaded portion configured to engage a second screw thread of a second mating portion of the second wellbore tool, and

a second sealing portion surrounding the outer surface and configured to create a second seal with the second wellbore tool,

wherein a maximum outer diameter of the body portion is less than a maximum inner diameter of the first mating portion of the first wellbore tool and the second mating portion of the second wellbore tool,

wherein the first threaded portion is positioned between the first sealing portion and the second sealing portion and the second threaded portion is positioned between the second sealing portion and the second end of the body portion, and

wherein a maximum outer diameter of the first sealing portion is less than a maximum outer diameter of the second sealing portion.

2. The TSA of claim 1 , wherein the body portion defines a plurality of keyways configured for receipt of a pair of respective keys of a rotary tool.

3. The TSA of claim 2 , wherein the second end of the body portion has an end face defining the plurality of keyways therein.

4. The TSA of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of keyways comprise a pair of opposed keyways.

5. The TSA of claim 1 , wherein the body portion includes a bore configured to receive a bulkhead for communicatively coupling the first wellbore tool and the second wellbore tool.

6. The TSA of claim 5 , wherein the bulkhead comprises a bulkhead seal configured to create a seal between the bore and the bulkhead.

7. The TSA of claim 1 , wherein the first sealing portion includes a first annular recess, the second sealing portion includes a second annular recess, at least a portion of a first seal is disposed in the first annular recess, and at least a portion of a second seal is disposed in the second annular recess.

8. The TSA of claim 7 , wherein the first annular recess has a diameter that is less than a diameter of the second annular recess.

9. The TSA of claim 1 , wherein a third seal is created between the TSA, the first wellbore tool, and the second wellbore tool.

10. The TSA of claim 1 , wherein the first threaded portion and the second threaded portion have different thread characteristics.

11. The TSA of claim 1 , wherein the first sealing portion is positioned between the first end of the body portion and the first threaded portion and the second sealing portion is positioned between the first threaded portion and the second threaded portion.

12. The TSA of claim 1 , wherein the first end of the body portion includes a first conical end portion and the second end of the body portion include a second conical end portion.

13. The TSA of claim 1 , wherein the body portion includes a bore configured to receive a bulkhead for electrically coupling the first wellbore tool and the second wellbore tool.

14. A tandem seal adapter (TSA) for connecting a first wellbore tool and a second wellbore tool, the TSA comprising:

a body portion including a first end and a second end, the body portion including an outer surface extending between the first and the second end, the outer surface including:

a first threaded portion configured to engage a first screw thread of a first mating portion of the first wellbore tool,

a first sealing portion located between the first end of the body portion and the first threaded portion, the first sealing portion surrounding the outer surface and configured to create a first seal with the first wellbore tool,

a second threaded portion configured to engage a second screw thread of a second mating portion of the second wellbore tool, and

a second sealing portion located between the first threaded portion and the second threaded portion, the second sealing portion surrounding the outer surface and configured to create a second seal with the second wellbore tool,

wherein a maximum outer diameter of the body portion is less than a maximum inner diameter of the first mating portion and the second mating portion, and

wherein a maximum outer diameter of the first sealing portion is less than a maximum outer diameter of the second sealing portion.

15. The TSA of claim 14 , wherein the first threaded portion and the second threaded portion have different thread characteristics.

16. The TSA of claim 14 , wherein a diameter of the first sealing portion is less than a diameter of the second sealing portion.

17. The TSA of claim 14 , wherein the body portion defines a plurality of keyways configured for receipt of a pair of respective keys of a rotary tool.

18. The TSA of claim 17 , wherein the second end of the body portion has an end face defining the plurality of keyways therein.

19. The TSA of claim 17 , wherein the plurality of keyways comprise a pair of opposed keyways.
