Abstract

The present disclosure relates to guidewire devices with an outer tube and a core. The distal section of the core extends into and is surrounded by the outer tube. One or more centering mechanisms are also disposed within the outer tube and are arranged to fill a portion of the annular space between the core and the inner surface of the tube. The one or more centering mechanisms thereby assist in keeping the distal section of the core axially aligned within the tube, which enables effective control of the device and minimizes undesirable whip movements of the guidewire.

Claims (46)

1 . An intravascular device, comprising:

an inner member including a proximal section and a distal section;

an outer tube coupled to the inner member such that the distal section of the inner member passes into and is encompassed by the outer tube, the outer tube and the inner member defining an annular space between an inner surface of the outer tube and an outer surface of the distal section of the inner member;

first and second centering coils positioned within at least a portion of the annular space; and

a radiopaque marker coil separate from the first and second centering coils and positioned distal of the second centering coil,

wherein the first centering coil has an inner diameter that is equal to or greater than an outside diameter of the second centering coil and that is equal to or greater than an outside diameter of the radiopaque marker coil,

wherein the first centering coil extends farther proximally than the second centering coil,

wherein at least a portion of the first centering coil extends over the second centering coil and over at least a portion of the radiopaque marker coil,

wherein the first and second centering coils are configured to limit movement of the inner member out of a radially centered position within the outer tube, and

wherein the second centering coil extends proximally until reaching a portion of the inner member where an outer diameter of the inner member matches an inner diameter of the second centering coil.

2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the first centering coil, the second centering coil, or both are formed from a non-radiopaque material.

3 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the first centering coil adjoins the inner member at a proximal coil joint, and wherein the proximal coil joint is located at a point where the diameter of the inner member is approximately 20 to 80% of an inner diameter of the outer tube.

4 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the first centering coil and the second centering coil have different outside diameter to inside diameter ratios.

5 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the first centering coil has a pitch to coil wire diameter ratio of about 1.05 to 2, and wherein the second centering coil has a pitch to coil wire diameter ratio of about 1.05 to 2.

6 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising a coating layer applied at least to an outer surface of the outer tube.

7 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the first centering coil, the second centering coil, or both are independently formed from stainless steel or nitinol.

8 . The device of claim 1 , wherein a length from a proximal end of the first centering coil to a distal end of the second centering coil is at least 15% of the length of the outer tube.

9 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising an atraumatic distal tip comprising an adhesive coupling the inner member to the outer tube.

10 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the first coil is sized to contact the inner surface of the outer tube, and the second coil is sized to not contact the inner surface of the outer tube.

11 . The device of claim 10 , wherein the first coil is sized so that the entire length of the first coil is in contact with the inner surface of the outer tube.

12 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the second centering coil and the radiopaque marker coil have the same outer diameter.

13 . An intravascular device, comprising:

a core including a proximal section and a distal section;

an outer tube coupled to the core such that the distal section of the core passes into and is encompassed by the outer tube, the outer tube and the core defining an annular space between an inner surface of the outer tube and an outer surface of the distal section of the core, wherein a distal end of the core extends distally beyond a distal end of the outer tube;

first and second centering coils positioned within at least a portion of the annular space; and

a radiopaque marker coil separate from the first and second centering coils,

wherein the radiopaque marker coil is positioned distal of the second centering coil,

wherein the first centering coil, the second centering coil, or both are formed from a non-radiopaque material,

wherein the first centering coil has an inner diameter that is equal to or greater than an outside diameter of the second centering coil and that is equal to or greater than an outside diameter of the radiopaque marker coil,

wherein the first centering coil extends farther proximally than the second centering coil, wherein at least a portion of the first centering coil extends over the second centering coil and over at least a portion of the radiopaque marker coil,

wherein the first and second centering coils are configured to limit movement of the core out of a radially centered position within the outer tube,

wherein the second centering coil extends proximally until reaching a portion of the inner member where an outer diameter of the inner member matches an inner diameter of the second centering coil, and

wherein the distal end of the core extends farther distally than the first centering coil, second centering coil, and radiopaque marker coil.

14 . The device of claim 13 , wherein the first centering coil and the second centering coil have different outside diameter to inside diameter ratios.

15 . The device of claim 13 , wherein a length from a proximal end of the first centering coil to a distal end of the second centering coil is at least 15% of the length of the outer tube.

16 . An intravascular device, comprising:

an inner member including a proximal section and a distal section;

an outer tube coupled to the inner member such that the distal section of the inner member passes into and is encompassed by the outer tube, the outer tube and the inner member defining an annular space between an inner surface of the outer tube and an outer surface of the distal section of the inner member; and

outer and inner centering coils positioned within at least a portion of the annular space and about the outer surface of the distal section of the inner member,

wherein the outer coil is sized to contact the inner surface of the outer tube, and the inner coil is sized to not contact the inner surface of the outer tube,

wherein the outer centering coil has an inner diameter that is equal to or greater than an outside diameter of the inner centering coil,

wherein at least a portion of the outer centering coil extends over at least a portion of the inner centering coil,

wherein the outer centering coil extends farther proximally than the inner centering coil, and

wherein the outer and inner centering coils are configured to limit movement of the inner member out of a radially centered position within the outer tube.

17 . The device of claim 16 , wherein the outer coil is sized so that the entire length of the outer coil is in contact with the inner surface of the outer tube.

18 . The device of claim 16 , wherein a wire diameter of the outer coil is greater than a wire diameter of the inner coil.
