Abstract

An apparatus includes a housing, a fluid reservoir, a flow control mechanism, and an actuator. The housing defines an inner volume and has an inlet port that can be fluidically coupled to a patient and an outlet port. The fluid reservoir is disposed in the inner volume to receive and isolate a first volume of a bodily-fluid. The flow control mechanism is rotatable in the housing from a first configuration, in which a first lumen places the inlet port is in fluid communication with the fluid reservoir, and a second configuration, in which a second lumen places the inlet port in fluid communication with the outlet port. The actuator is configured to create a negative pressure in the fluid reservoir and is configured to rotate the flow control mechanism from the first configuration to the second configuration after the first volume of bodily-fluid is received in the fluid reservoir.

Claims (54)

1. A method of using a blood transfer device to reduce contamination in blood samples, the blood transfer device including a housing having an inlet port and an outlet port, the method comprising:

establishing fluid communication between the inlet port and a patient while the blood transfer device is in a first configuration, the blood transfer device in the first configuration being such that (i) a first flow path is in fluid communication with the inlet port and (ii) a portion of a second flow path is obstructed;

receiving a flow of blood from the inlet port and through the first flow path;

transitioning the blood transfer device from the first configuration to a second configuration when a first volume of blood is contained in an inner volume defined by the housing; and

receiving a subsequent flow of blood from the inlet port, through the second flow path, and to the outlet port while bypassing contaminants contained in the first volume of blood.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

transitioning the blood transfer device includes sequestering, in the inner volume of the housing, the first volume of blood and contaminants contained therein,

bypassing the contaminants contained in the first volume of blood includes bypassing at least a portion of the first volume of blood sequestered in the inner volume of the housing, and

bypassing at least the portion of the first volume of blood sequestered in the inner volume of the housing limits contamination of the subsequent flow of blood and reduces false results in culture testing of a sample volume of the subsequent flow of blood.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein transitioning the blood transfer device includes automatically transitioning from the first configuration to the second configuration when the first volume of blood substantially fills the inner volume of the housing.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the inner volume of the housing forms a fluid reservoir disposed in and defined by the housing.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein transitioning the blood transfer device includes transitioning from the first configuration to the second configuration when the first volume of blood substantially fills the fluid reservoir.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein transitioning the blood transfer device includes transitioning from the first configuration to the second configuration when a pressure equalizes between the fluid reservoir and a body of the patient.

7. A method of using a blood transfer device to reduce contamination in blood samples, the blood transfer device including a housing having an inlet port and an outlet port, the method comprising:

establishing fluid communication between the inlet port and a patient;

receiving a flow of blood from the inlet port into an inner volume defined at least in part by the housing while the blood transfer device is in a first configuration, the blood transfer device in the first configuration being such that (i) a first flow path places the inlet port in fluid communication with the inner volume of the housing and (ii) a portion of a second flow path is obstructed;

transitioning the blood transfer device from the first configuration to a second configuration when a first volume of blood is in the inner volume of the housing, the blood transfer device in the second configuration being such that the second flow path places the inlet port in fluid communication with the outlet port; and

receiving a subsequent flow of blood from the inlet port to the outlet port while bypassing contaminants contained in the first volume of blood.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein:

transitioning the blood transfer device includes sequestering, in the inner volume of the housing, the first volume of blood and contaminants contained therein,

bypassing the contaminants contained in the first volume of blood includes bypassing at least a portion of the first volume of blood sequestered in the inner volume of the housing, and

bypassing at least the portion of the first volume of blood sequestered in the inner volume of the housing limits contamination of the subsequent flow of blood and reduces false results in culture testing of a sample volume of the subsequent flow of blood.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the inner volume of the housing forms a fluid reservoir disposed in and defined by the housing.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein transitioning the blood transfer device includes transitioning from the first configuration to the second configuration when a pressure equalizes between the fluid reservoir and a body of the patient.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein transitioning the blood transfer device includes transitioning from the first configuration to the second configuration when the first volume of blood substantially fills the fluid reservoir.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the blood transfer device further includes a seal member at least partially disposed in the inner volume of the housing to define at least a portion of the fluid reservoir, the seal member configured to facilitate a negative pressure differential in the fluid reservoir, and

wherein receiving the flow of blood from the inlet port into the inner volume of the housing includes receiving the first volume of blood from the inlet port into the fluid reservoir based at least in part on the negative pressure differential.

13. A method of using a blood transfer device reduce contamination in blood samples, the blood transfer device having a housing, the method comprising:

establishing fluid communication between an inlet port of the housing and a patient;

receiving, via a first flow path, a first volume of blood from the inlet port into an inner volume defined at least in part by the housing;

obstructing a portion of a second flow path as the first volume of blood is received into the inner volume of the housing;

transitioning the blood transfer device, when the first volume of blood is in the inner volume of the housing, such that the portion of the second flow path is unobstructed; and

receiving, after transitioning the blood transfer device, a second volume of blood from the inlet port, through the second flow path, and to an outlet port of the housing, while bypassing contaminants contained in the first volume of blood.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

sequestering, in the inner volume of the housing, the first volume of blood and contaminants contained therein.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein:

bypassing the contaminants contained in the first volume of blood includes bypassing at least a portion of the first volume of blood sequestered in the inner volume of the housing, and

bypassing at least the portion of the first volume of blood sequestered in the inner volume of the housing limits contamination of a second volume of blood and reduces false results in culture testing of the second volume of blood.
