Abstract

A system projects a user-viewable, computer-generated or -fed image, wherein a head-mounted projector is used to project an image onto a retro-reflective surface, so only the viewer can see the image. The projector is connected to a computer that contains software to create virtual 2-D and or 3-D images for viewing by the user. Further, one projector each is mounted on either side of the user's head, and, by choosing for example a retro angle of less than about 10 degrees, each eye can only see the image of one of the projectors at a given distance up to 3 meters, in this example, from the retro-reflective screen. The retro angle used may be reduced with larger viewing distance desired. These projectors use lasers to avoid the need for focusing, and in some cases these projectors use instead of lasers highly collimated LED light sources to avoid the need for focusing.

Claims (50)

1 . A head mounted device, comprising:

a mounting frame, including:

one or more light sources that are configured to scan one or more portions of light towards a user, wherein one or more other portions of the light are scanned away from the user;

one or more sensors that are configured to detect one or more movements of a head or an eye of the user based on one or more reflections of the one or more other portions of the light from the user;

a user interface configured to display one or more objects to the user, wherein the one or more of the detected movements of the user are employed to determine one or more interactions of the user with the one or more objects; and

using the one or more detected movements to identify an off-center view by one or more eyes of the user that is employed to automatically adjust the display to compensate for one or more of a vertical disparity or a horizontal disparity of the one or more objects in the user interface.

2 . The head mounted device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more portions of the light are visible light.

3 . The head mounted device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more other portions of the light are non-visible light.

4 . The head mounted device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more movements, further comprise one or more of a finger gesture or a hand gesture.

5 . The head mounted device of claim 1 , further comprising:

scanning the one or more portions of light onto one or more eyes of the user; and

scanning the one or more other portions of light in an opposite direction from the one or more eyes of the user.

6 . The head mounted device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more light sources further comprise one or more of a collimated light emitting diode device.

7 . The head mounted device of claim 1 , wherein the user interface further comprises:

generating automatic calibration of the display with one or more virtual hands in a virtual environment; and

generating one or more interfaces for the user to adjust the display based on position of one or more eyes of the user, intra-ocular distance, horizontal disparity, vertical disparity, and the inclination of the user.

8 . The head mounted device of claim 1 , wherein the user interface, further comprises one or more virtual objects in a virtual environment.

9 . The head mounted device of claim 1 , wherein the mounting frame further comprises one or more of an eyewear frame, an eye stalk, or a clip-on eyewear device.

10 . The head mounted device of claim 1 , further comprising:

an interface for connecting to a mobile device that is configured to provide remote computational processing for the head mounted device.

11 . The head mounted device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more other scanned portions of the light further comprise separate images that correspond to each eye of the user, wherein each of the separate images are directed at each corresponding eye.

12 . The head mounted device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more other scanned portions of the light are directed onto a retro-reflective surface.

13 . The head mounted device of claim 12 , wherein the retro-reflective surface, further comprises:

one or more fiduciary markers; and

wherein corner cube array diversity is provided at one or more corners of the retro-reflective surface to reduce occurrences of speckle and one or more interference patterns.

14 . The head mounted device of claim 1 , wherein the automatic compensation adjustment of the display, further comprises:

using the one or more detected movements by the eye of the user in a direction towards the one or more objects and a subsequent detection of a movement of the user's head in the eye's direction to compensate for the one or more vertical disparity or horizontal disparity of the one or more objects in the user interface.

15 . A computer readable non-transitory storage media that includes instructions for operation of a head mounted device, wherein execution of the instructions by one or more processors causes actions, comprising:

employing one or more light sources that are configured to scan one or more portions of light towards a user, wherein one or more other portions of the light are scanned away from the user;

employing one or more sensors that are configured to detect one or more movements of a head or an eye of the user based on one or more reflections of the one or more other portions of the light from the user;

employing a user interface configured to display one or more objects to the user, wherein the one or more of the detected movements of the user are employed to determine one or more interactions of the user with the one or more objects; and

using the one or more detected movements to identify an off-center view by one or more eyes of the user that is employed to automatically adjust the display to compensate for one or more of a vertical disparity or a horizontal disparity of the one or more objects in the user interface.

16 . The computer readable non-transitory storage media of claim 15 , wherein the one or more portions of the light are visible light, and wherein the one or more other portions of the light are non-visible light.

17 . The computer readable non-transitory storage media of claim 15 , further comprising:

scanning the one or more portions of light onto one or more eyes of the user; and

scanning the one or more other portions of light in an opposite direction from the one or more eyes of the user.

18 . The computer readable non-transitory storage media of claim 15 , wherein the user interface further comprises:

generating automatic calibration of the display with one or more virtual hands in a virtual environment; and

generating one or more interfaces for the user to adjust the display based on position of one or more eyes of the user, intra-ocular distance, horizontal disparity, vertical disparity, and the inclination of the user.

19 . The computer readable non-transitory storage media of claim 15 , wherein the head mounted device further comprises one or more of an eyewear frame, an eye stalk, or a clip-on eyewear device.

20 . The computer readable non-transitory storage media of claim 15 , generating an interface for connecting to a mobile device that is configured to provide remote computational processing for the head mounted device.

21 . The method of claim 20 , wherein the automatic compensation adjustment of the display, further comprises:

using the one or more detected movements by the eye of the user in a direction towards the one or more objects and a subsequent detection of a movement of the user's head in the eye's direction to compensate for the one or more vertical disparity or horizontal disparity of the one or more objects in the user interface.

22 . The computer readable non-transitory storage media of claim 15 , wherein the automatic compensation adjustment of the display, further comprises:

using the one or more detected movements by the eye of the user in a direction towards the one or more objects and a subsequent detection of a movement of the user's head in the eye's direction to compensate for the one or more vertical disparity or horizontal disparity of the one or more objects in the user interface.

23 . A method for operation of a head mounted device, wherein execution of the method causes actions, comprising:

employing one or more light sources that are configured to scan one or more portions of light towards a user, wherein one or more other portions of the light are scanned away from the user;

employing one or more sensors to detect one or more movements of a head of the user based on one or more reflections of the one or more other portions of the light from the user;
