Abstract

Among other things, an equipment for use on board a first ground transportation entity has (a) a receiver for information generated by a sensor of the environment of the first ground transportation entity, (b) a processor, and (c) a memory storing instructions executable by the processor to generate and send safety message information to a second ground transportation entity based on the information generated by the sensor.

Claims (52)

1 . A method, comprising

collecting motion data using sensors in a first capable ground transportation entity that is capable of sending safety messages to other ground transportation entities, wherein the motion data characterizes motion of a plurality of ground transportation entities in a vicinity of the first capable ground transportation entity;

sending, from the first capable ground transportation entity to a second capable ground transportation entity that is capable of sending safety messages to other ground transportation entities, a first safety message of a first type, the first safety message comprising information about motion of the first capable ground transportation entity,

wherein the first safety message has a message structure defined by a regulatory regime;

detecting a presence of a non-capable ground transportation entity that is not capable of sending safety messages to other ground transportation entities; and

based on detecting the presence of the non-capable ground transportation entity, sending, from the first capable ground transportation entity to the second capable ground transportation entity, a second safety message of a second type that comprises information about motion of the non-capable ground transportation entity,

wherein the second safety message is sent on behalf of the non-capable ground transportation entity,

wherein the information about the motion of the non-capable ground transportation entity is based on the motion data collected by the sensors,

wherein the second safety message of the second type has the message structure of the first safety message of the first type, and

wherein the message structure enables the second capable ground transportation entity to process safety messages of the second type as if the safety messages of the second type were of the first type.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein sending the second safety message comprises:

based on the motion data, executing a trajectory-building machine learning model using a computing system included in the first capable ground transportation entity, to generate a predicted future trajectory for the non-capable ground transportation entity, and

including the predicted future trajectory in the second safety message.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second safety message comprises at least one of a speed of the non-capable ground transportation entity, a heading of the non-capable ground transportation entity, or a brake status of the non-capable ground transportation entity.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second safety message comprises at least one of a path history of the non-capable ground transportation entity or a path prediction of the non-capable ground transportation entity.

5 . The method of claim 1 , comprising:

predicting, by a computing system included in the first capable ground transportation entity, a collision between the non-capable ground transportation entity and the second capable ground transportation entity; and

in response to predicting the collision, sending a collision avoidance message to the second capable ground transportation entity.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the collision is predicted to occur outside a vicinity of any intersection.

7 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the collision is predicted to occur on a straight road segment.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first capable ground transportation entity, second capable ground transportation entity, or non-capable ground transportation entity comprises a motorized vehicle.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the non-capable ground transportation entity comprises a pedestrian.

10 . The method of claim 1 , comprising:

using a computing system included in the first capable ground transportation entity, predicting an action to be performed by a driver of the first capable ground transportation entity; and

including an indication of the action in the first safety message.

11 . A system comprising:

sensors in a first capable ground transportation entity that is capable of sending safety messages to other ground transportation entities; and

a computing system in the first capable ground transportation entity, wherein the computing system is configured to:

collect motion data using the sensors, wherein the motion data characterizes motion of a plurality of ground transportation entities in a vicinity of the first capable ground transportation entity;

send, from the first capable ground transportation entity to a second capable ground transportation entity that is capable of sending safety messages to other ground transportation entities, a first safety message of a first type, the first safety message comprising information about motion of the first capable ground transportation entity,

wherein the first safety message has a message structure defined by a regulatory regime;

detect a presence of a non-capable ground transportation entity that is not capable of sending safety messages to other ground transportation entities; and

based on detecting the presence of the non-capable ground transportation entity, send, from the first capable ground transportation entity to the second capable ground transportation entity, a second safety message of a second type that comprises information about motion of the non-capable ground transportation entity,

wherein the second safety message is sent on behalf of the non-capable ground transportation entity,

wherein the information about the motion of the non-capable ground transportation entity is based on the motion data collected by the sensors,

wherein the second safety message of the second type has the message structure of the first safety message of the first type, and

wherein the message structure enables the second capable ground transportation entity to process safety messages of the second type as if the safety messages of the second type were of the first type.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein sending the second safety message comprises:

based on the motion data, executing a trajectory-building machine learning model to generate a predicted future trajectory for the non-capable ground transportation entity, and

including the predicted future trajectory in the second safety message.

13 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the second safety message comprises at least one of a speed of the non-capable ground transportation entity, a heading of the non-capable ground transportation entity, or a brake status of the non-capable ground transportation entity.

14 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the second safety message comprises at least one of a path history of the non-capable ground transportation entity or a path prediction of the non-capable ground transportation entity.

15 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the computing system is configured to:

predict a collision between the non-capable ground transportation entity and the second capable ground transportation entity; and

in response to predicting the collision, send a collision avoidance message to the second capable ground transportation entity.

16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the collision is predicted to occur outside a vicinity of any intersection.

17 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the collision is predicted to occur on a straight road segment.

18 . The system of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the first capable ground transportation entity, second capable ground transportation entity, or non-capable ground transportation entity comprises a motorized vehicle.

19 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the non-capable ground transportation entity comprises a pedestrian.

20 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the computing system is configured to:

predict an action to be performed by a driver of the first capable ground transportation entity; and

include an indication of the action in the first safety message.
