Abstract

An electrochromic rearview mirror suitable for a motor vehicle is disclosed. The mirror includes a display device disposed behind the rear substrate.

Claims (171)

1. An electrochromic rearview mirror for a motor vehicle comprising;

(a) a first substantially transparent front substrate having a first and a second surface and coated with a substantially transparent conductive electrode coating on its second surface;

(b) a rear substrate having a third and a fourth surface, said rear substrate positioned in spaced-apart relationship with said front substrate and with the third surface of said rear substrate opposing the second surface of said front substrate;

(c) a partially transmitting/substantially reflecting mirror reflector disposed on the third surface of said rear substrate;

(d) a seal positioned toward a peripheral edge of each of said front substrate and said rear substrate and forming a cavity therebetween;

(e) an electrochromic medium disposed in said cavity and contacting said substantially transparent conductive electrode coating of said front substrate and said partially transmitting/substantially reflecting mirror reflector disposed on the third surface of said rear substrate;

(f) said mirror reflector comprising at least one metal layer, said mirror reflector reflecting at least about 55% of visible light incident thereon;

(g) a display device disposed behind said fourth surface of said rear substrate such that light emitted by said display device passes through said rear substrate, through said partially transmitting/substantially reflecting mirror reflector, through said substantially transparent conductive electrode coating and through said front substrate when said display device is electrically powered; and

(h) said rear substrate with said partially transmitting/substantially reflecting mirror reflector disposed on the third surface thereof having a visible light transmission in the range from about 1% transmission to about 30% transmission.

2. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 1 , wherein said mirror reflector reflects at least about 65% of visible light incident thereon.

3. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 2 , wherein said metal layer comprises silver.

4. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 2 , wherein said mirror reflector comprises a metal layer overcoated with another layer, said electrochromic medium in electrical contact with said another layer.

5. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 4 , wherein said another layer comprises a conductive metal oxide layer.

6. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 2 , wherein said metal layer comprises aluminum.

7. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 1 , wherein said mirror reflector comprises a metal layer undercoated with another layer, said another layer disposed closer to the third surface of said rear substrate than said metal layer.

8. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 1 , wherein said display device comprises a light emitting diode.

9. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 1 , wherein said display device comprises a vacuum fluorescent device.

10. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 1 , wherein said seal is deposited with a computer numerical control controlled dispenser.

11. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 1 , wherein said front substrate and said rear substrate are bent so as to form a convex mirror.

12. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 1 , wherein said front substrate and said rear substrate are bent so as to form a multi-radius mirror.

13. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 1 , wherein said rearview mirror comprises a vehicular interior rearview mirror.

14. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 1 , wherein said rearview mirror comprises a vehicular exterior rearview mirror.

15. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 1 , wherein said electrochromic medium comprises an electrochromic solid medium.

16. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 1 , wherein said electrochromic medium comprises an electrochemichromic medium.

17. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 1 , wherein said electrochromic medium comprises a viologen.

18. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 1 , said electrochromic medium comprises an ultraviolet stabilizing agent.

19. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 1 , wherein said display device comprises a turn signal indicator.

20. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 19 , wherein said rearview mirror comprises a vehicular exterior rearview mirror.

21. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 19 , wherein said rearview mirror comprises a vehicular interior rearview mirror.

22. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 1 , wherein said display device comprises at least one of a fluorescent display device, a light emitting diode display device, a gas discharge display device, a plasma display device and an electroluminescent display device.

23. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 1 , wherein light absorbing means are disposed substantially across said fourth surface of said rear substrate except generally at where said display device is disposed.

24. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 1 , wherein said front substrate and said rear substrate are generally sized and shaped to like dimensions so as to be generally flush in said spaced-apart relationship.

25. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of said front substrate and said rear substrate comprises an electrical bus bar proximate a perimeter edge thereof.

26. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 25 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a solder.

27. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 25 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises an ultrasonically-applied solder.

28. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 25 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a polymeric material.

29. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 25 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a conductive epoxy.

30. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 25 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a conductive rubber.

31. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 25 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a conductive fit.

32. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 25 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a conductive silver flit.

33. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 25 , wherein said electrical bus bar overlaps onto a substrate cut edge.

34. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 33 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a thin metal film.

35. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 25 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a thin metal film.

36. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 35 , wherein said thin metal film is deposited by a vacuum deposition process.

37. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 36 , wherein said vacuum deposition process comprises evaporation.

38. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 36 , wherein said vacuum deposition process comprises sputtering.

39. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 1 , wherein said seal comprises a polymeric material.

40. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 1 , wherein said seal comprises an epoxy material.

41. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 40 , wherein said epoxy material comprises a latent cure epoxy material.

42. An electrochromic rearview mirror for a motor vehicle comprising;

(a) a first substantially transparent front substrate having a first and a second surface and coated with a substantially transparent conductive electrode coating on its second surface;

(b) a rear substrate having a third and a fourth surface, said rear substrate positioned in spaced-apart relationship with said front substrate and with the third surface of said rear substrate opposing the second surface of said front substrate;

(c) a partially transmitting/substantially reflecting mirror reflector disposed on the third surface of said rear substrate;

(d) a seal positioned toward a peripheral edge of each of said front substrate and said rear substrate and forming a cavity therebetween;

(e) an electrochromic medium disposed in said cavity and contacting said substantially transparent conductive electrode coating of said front substrate and said partially transmitting/substantially reflecting mirror reflector disposed on the third surface of said rear substrate;

(f) said mirror reflector comprising at least one metal layer, said mirror reflector reflecting at least about 55% of visible light incident thereon;

(g) a display device disposed behind said fourth surface of said rear substrate such that light emitted by said display device passes through said rear substrate, through said partially transmitting/substantially reflecting mirror reflector, through said substantially transparent conductive electrode coating and through said front substrate when said display device is electrically powered; and

(h) said rear substrate with said partially transmitting/substantially reflecting mirror reflector disposed on the third surface thereof having a visible light transmission in the range from about 1% transmission to about 30% transmission.

(i) wherein light absorbing means that substantially absorb visible light are disposed substantially across said fourth surface of said rear substrate except generally at where said display device is disposed.

43. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said mirror reflector reflects at least about 65% of visible light incident thereon.

44. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 43 , wherein said metal layer comprises silver.

45. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 44 , wherein said mirror reflector comprises a metal layer overcoated with another layer, said electrochromic medium in electrical contact with said another layer.

46. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 45 wherein said another layer comprises a conductive metal oxide layer.

47. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 43 , wherein said metal layer comprises aluminum.

48. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said mirror reflector comprises a metal layer undercoated with another layer, said another layer disposed closer to the third surface of said rear substrate than said metal layer.

49. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said display device comprises a light emitting diode.

50. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said display device comprises a vacuum fluorescent device.

51. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said seal is deposited with a computer numerical control controlled dispenser.

52. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said front substrate and said rear substrate are bent so as to form a convex mirror.

53. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said front substrate and said rear substrate are bent so as to form a multi-radius mirror.

54. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said rearview mirror comprises a vehicular interior rearview mirror.

55. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said rearview mirror comprises a vehicular exterior rearview mirror.

56. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said electrochromic medium comprises an electrochromic solid medium.

57. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said electrochromic medium comprises an electrochemichromic medium.

58. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said electrochromic medium comprises a viologen.

59. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 42 , said electrochromic medium comprises an ultraviolet stabilizing agent.

60. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said display device comprises a turn signal indicator.

61. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 60 , wherein said rearview mirror comprises a vehicular exterior rearview mirror.

62. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 60 , wherein said rearview mirror comprises a vehicular interior rearview mirror.

63. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said display device comprises at least one of a fluorescent display device, a light emitting diode display device, a gas discharge display device, a plasma display device and an electroluminescent display device.

64. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said light absorbing means comprises at least one chosen from the group consisting of a tape, a coating, a lacquer and a film.

65. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said front substrate and said rear substrate are generally sized and shaped to like dimensions so as to be generally flush in said spaced-apart relationship.

66. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 42 , wherein at least one of said front substrate and said rear substrate comprises an electrical bus bar proximate a perimeter edge thereof.

67. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 66 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a solder.

68. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 66 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises an ultrasonically-applied solder.

69. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 66 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a polymeric material.

70. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 66 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a conductive epoxy.

71. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 66 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a conductive rubber.

72. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 66 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a conductive flit.

73. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 66 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a conductive silver flit.

74. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 66 , wherein said electrical bus bar overlaps onto a substrate cut edge.

75. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 74 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a thin metal film.

76. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 66 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a thin metal film.

77. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 76 , wherein said thin metal film is deposited by a vacuum deposition process.

78. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 77 , wherein said vacuum deposition process comprises evaporation.

79. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 77 , wherein said vacuum deposition process comprises sputtering.

80. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said seal comprises a polymeric material.

81. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said seal comprises an epoxy material.

82. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 81 , wherein said epoxy material comprises a latent cure epoxy material.

83. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said light absorbing means comprises a tape or film.

84. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 83 , wherein said tape or film provided anti-scatter protection.

85. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said light absorbing means comprises colored light absorber.

86. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said light absorbing means comprises a dark colored light absorber.

87. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said light absorbing means comprises a dark colored tape or film.

88. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 87 , wherein said dark colored tape or film comprises an aperture or cutout where said display device is disposed behind said fourth surface of said rear substrate.

89. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said light absorbing means is substantially opaque.

90. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said display device is disposed behind said fourth surface of said rear substrate adhesively.

91. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said display device is adhered to the fourth surface of said rear substrate.

92. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said display device is adhered to the fourth surface of said rear substrate by an index matching adhesive.

93. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 42 , wherein said display device is adhered to the fourth surface of said rear substrate by an index matching adhesive that is dyed.

94. An electrochromic rearview mirror for a motor vehicle comprising;

(a) a first substantially transparent front substrate having a first and a second surface and coated with a substantially transparent conductive electrode coating on its second surface;

(b) a rear substrate having a third and a fourth surface, said rear substrate positioned in spaced-apart relationship with said front substrate and with the third surface of said rear substrate opposing the second surface of said front substrate;

(c) a partially transmitting/substantially reflecting mirror reflector disposed on the third surface of said rear substrate;

(d) a seal positioned toward a peripheral edge of each of said front substrate and said rear substrate and forming a cavity therebetween;

(e) an electrochromic medium disposed in said cavity and contacting said substantially transparent conductive electrode coating of said front substrate and said partially transmitting/substantially reflecting mirror reflector disposed on the third surface of said rear substrate;

(f) said mirror reflector comprising at least one metal layer, said mirror reflector reflecting at least about 55% of visible light incident thereon;

(g) a display device disposed behind said fourth surface of said rear substrate such that light emitted by said display device passes through said rear substrate, through said partially transmitting/substantially reflecting mirror reflector, through said substantially transparent conductive electrode coating and through said front substrate when said display device is electrically powered;

(h) wherein light absorbing means that substantially absorb visible light are disposed substantially across said fourth surface of said rear substrate except generally at where said display device is disposed; and

(i) wherein said display device comprises at least one of a fluorescent display device, a light emitting diode display device, a gas discharge display device, a plasma display device and an electroluminescent display device.

95. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said mirror reflector reflects at least about 65% of visible light incident thereon.

96. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 95 , wherein said metal layer comprises silver.

97. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 95 , wherein said mirror reflector comprises a metal layer overcoated with another layer, said electrochromic medium in electrical contact with said another layer.

98. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 97 , wherein said another layer comprises a conductive metal oxide layer.

99. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 95 , wherein said metal layer comprises aluminum.

100. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said mirror reflector comprises a metal layer undercoated with another layer, said another layer disposed closer to the third surface of said rear substrate than said metal layer.

101. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said display device comprises a light emitting diode.

102. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said display device comprises a vacuum fluorescent device.

103. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said seal is deposited with a computer numerical control controlled dispenser.

104. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said front substrate and said rear substrate are bent so as to form a convex mirror.

105. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said front substrate and said rear substrate are bent so as to form a multi-radius mirror.

106. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said rearview mirror comprises a vehicular interior rearview mirror.

107. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said rearview mirror comprises a vehicular exterior rearview mirror.

108. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said electrochromic medium comprises an electrochromic solid medium.

109. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said electrochromic medium comprises an electrochemichromic medium.

110. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said electrochromic medium comprises a viologen.

111. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 94 , said electrochromic medium comprises an ultraviolet stabilizing agent.

112. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said display device comprises a turn signal indicator.

113. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 112 , wherein said rearview mirror comprises a vehicular exterior rearview mirror.

114. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 112 , wherein said rearview mirror comprises a vehicular interior rearview mirror.

The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said rear substrate with said partially transmitting/substantially reflecting mirror reflector disposed on the third surface thereof has a visible light transmission in the range from about 1% transmission to about 30% transmission.

116. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said light absorbing means comprises at least one chosen from the group consisting of a tape, a coating, a lacquer and a film.

117. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said front substrate and said rear substrate are generally sized and shaped to like dimensions so as to be generally flush in said spaced-apart relationship.

118. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 94 , wherein at least one of said front substrate and said rear substrate comprises an electrical bus bar proximate a perimeter edge thereof.

119. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 118 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a solder.

120. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 118 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises an ultrasonically-applied solder.

121. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 118 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a polymeric material.

122. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 118 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a conductive epoxy.

123. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 118 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a conductive rubber.

124. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 118 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a conductive flit.

125. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 118 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a conductive silver flit.

126. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 118 , wherein said electrical bus bar overlaps onto a substrate cut edge.

127. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 126 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a thin metal film.

128. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 118 , wherein said electrical bus bar comprises a thin metal film.

129. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 128 , wherein said thin metal film is deposited by a vacuum deposition process.

130. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 129 , wherein said vacuum deposition process comprises evaporation.

131. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 129 , wherein said vacuum deposition process comprises sputtering.

132. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said seal comprises a polymeric material.

133. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said seal comprises an epoxy material.

134. The electrochromic mirror according to claim 133 , wherein said epoxy material comprises a latent cure epoxy material.

135. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said light absorbing means comprises a tape or film.

136. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said tape or film provided anti-scatter protection.

137. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said light absorbing means comprises colored light absorber.

138. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said light absorbing means comprises a dark colored light absorber.

139. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said light absorbing means comprises a dark colored tape or film.

140. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 139 , wherein said dark colored tape or film comprises an aperture or cutout where said display device is disposed behind said fourth surface of said rear substrate.

141. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said light absorbing means is substantially opaque.

142. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said display device is disposed behind said fourth surface of said rear substrate adhesively.

143. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said display device is adhered to the fourth surface of said rear substrate.

144. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said display device is adhered to the fourth surface of said rear substrate by an index matching adhesive.

145. The electrochromic rearview mirror according to claim 94 , wherein said display device is adhered to the fourth surface of said rear substrate by an index matching adhesive that is dyed.
