Abstract

A tubular liner including a first tubular portion, a second tubular portion, and an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to, and positioned between, the first and second tubular portions.

Claims (259)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion;

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions; and

an expansion device positioned within the second tubular portion for radially expanding and plastically deforming the first tubular portion;

wherein the outside diameter of the second tubular portion is greater than the outside diameter of the first tubular portion.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first, second and third tubular portions are fabricated from materials selected from the group consisting of: automotive grade steel, plastic, and chromium steel.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first, second, and third tubular portions further comprise one or more compressible sealing members.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the length of the apparatus ranges from about 40 to 20,000 feet.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the first tubular portion ranges from about ⅜ to 1.5 inches and about 3.5 to 16 inches, respectively.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the second tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the intermediate tapered tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thickness of the second tubular portion.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tubular portion.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the wall thickness of an end portion of the first tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the remaining portion of the first tubular portion.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein end portion of the first tubular portion comprises a compressible sealing member.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first tubular portion comprises a perforated tubular member.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first tubular portion comprises a plurality of tubular portions coupled end to end; and wherein at least one of the plurality of tubular portions comprise a perforated tubular member.

14. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the first tubular portion ranges from about ⅜ to 1.5 inches and about 3.5 to 16 inches, respectively;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the second tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the intermediate tapered tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively;

wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and

wherein the outside diameter of the intermediate tapered tubular portion varies from the outside diameter of the first tubular portion to the outside diameter of the second tubular portion.

15. The tubular liner of claim 14 , wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion.

16. The tubular liner of claim 14 , wherein the wall thickness of the second tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the first tubular portion.

17. The tubular liner of claim 14 , wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the second tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the first tubular portion.

18. The tubular liner of claim 14 , wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

19. The tubular liner of claim 14 , wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

20. A tubular liner, comprising:

a plastically deformed solid tubular member;

one or more sealing members coupled to an end portion of the plastically deformed tubular member; and

one or more radial pressure relief passages defined at the end portion of the plastically deformed tubular member;

wherein the plastically deformed tubular member comprises an outer diameter and a wall thickness ranging from about 3.5 to 19 inches and about ⅛ to 1.5 inches, respectively.

21. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the first tubular portion ranges from about ⅜ to 1.5 inches and about 3.5 to 16 inches, respectively;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the second tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the intermediate tapered tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively;

wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion;

wherein the outside diameter of the intermediate tapered tubular portion varies from the outside diameter of the first tubular portion to the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and

wherein the wall thickness of the second tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the first tubular portion.

22. The tubular liner of claim 21 , wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion.

23. The tubular liner of claim 21 , wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thickness of the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

24. The tubular liner of claim 21 , wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thickness of the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

25. An apparatus, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion;

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions; and

an expansion device positioned within the second tubular portion for radially expanding and plastically deforming the first tubular portion;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the first tubular portion ranges from about ⅜ to 1.5 inches and about 3.5 to 16 inches, respectively; and

wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion.

26. The apparatus of claim 25 , wherein the wall thickness of the second tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the first tubular portion.

27. The apparatus of claim 25 , wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is lass than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the second tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the first tubular portion.

28. The apparatus of claim 25 , wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

29. The apparatus of claim 25 , wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

30. An apparatus, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion;

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions; and

an expansion device positioned within the second tubular portion for radially expanding and plastically deforming the first tubular portion;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the second tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively; and

wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion.

31. The apparatus of claim 30 , wherein the wall thickness of the second tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the first tubular portion.

32. The apparatus of claim 30 , wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the second tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the first tubular portion.

33. The apparatus of claim 30 , wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

34. The apparatus of claim 30 , wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

35. An apparatus, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion;

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions; and

an expansion device positioned within the second tubular portion for radially expanding and plastically deforming the first tubular portion;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the intermediate tapered tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively; and

wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion.

36. The apparatus of claim 35 , wherein the wall thickness of the second tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the first tubular portion.

37. The apparatus of claim 35 , wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the second tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the first tubular portion.

38. The apparatus of claim 35 , wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

39. The apparatus of claim 35 , wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

40. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the outside diameter of the second tubular portion is greater than the outside diameter of the first tubular portion; and

wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thickness of the second tubular portion.

41. The tubular liner of claim 40 , wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the second tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the first tubular portion.

42. The tubular liner of claim 40 , wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

43. The tubular liner of claim 40 , wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

44. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion;

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions before radial expansion and plastic deformation; and

one or more compressible sealing members coupled to the exterior surfaces of one of the first tubular portion, the second tubular portion, and the intermediate tubular portion;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the first tubular portion ranges from about ⅜ to 1.5 inches and about 3.5 to 16 inches, respectively;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the second tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the intermediate tapered tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively; and

wherein the wall thickness of the second tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the first tubular portion.

45. The tubular liner of claim 44 , wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion.

46. The tubular liner of claim 44 , wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion.

47. The tubular liner of claim 44 , wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thickness of the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

48. The tubular liner of claim 44 , wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thickness of the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

49. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion.

50. The tubular liner of claim 49 , wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

51. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the outside diameter of the second tubular portion is greater than the outside diameter of the first tubular portion.

52. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thickness of the second tubular portion.

53. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tubular portion.

54. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness of an end portion of the first tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the remaining portion of the first tubular portion.

55. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein end portion of the first tubular portion comprises a compressible sealing member.

56. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the first tubular portion comprises a perforated tubular member.

57. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the first tubular portion comprises a plurality of tubular portions coupled end to end; and wherein at least one of the plurality of tubular portions comprise a perforated tubular member.

58. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the first tubular portion ranges from about ⅜ to 1.5 inches and about 3.5 to 16 inches, respectively; and

wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion.

59. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the first tubular portion ranges from about ⅜ to 1.5 inches and about 3.5 to 16 inches, respectively; and

wherein the wall thickness of the second tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the first tubular portion.

60. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the first tubular portion ranges from about ⅜ to 1.5 inches and about 3.5 to 16 inches, respectively; and

wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the second tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the first tubular portion.

61. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the first tubular portion ranges from about ⅜ to 1.5 inches and about 3.5 to 16 inches, respectively; and

wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

62. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the first tubular portion ranges from about ⅜ to 1.5 inches and about 3.5 to 16 inches, respectively; and

wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

63. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the second tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively; and

wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion.

64. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the second tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively; and

wherein the wall thickness of the second tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the first tubular portion.

65. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the second tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively; and

wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the second tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the first tubular portion.

66. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the second tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively; and

wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

67. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the second tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively; and

wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

68. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the intermediate tapered tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively; and

wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion.

69. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the intermediate tapered tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively; and

wherein the wall thickness of the second tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the first tubular portion.

70. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the intermediate tapered tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively; and

wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the second tubular portion is less than the wall thickness of the first tubular portion.

71. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the intermediate tapered tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively; and

wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

72. A tubular liner, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion; and

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions;

wherein the wall thickness and outside diameter of the intermediate tapered tubular portion ranges from about ⅛ to 1.25 inches and about 3.5 to 19 inches, respectively; and

wherein the outside diameter of the first tubular portion is less than the outside diameter of the second tubular portion; and wherein the wall thickness of the first tubular portion is greater than the wall thicknesses of the second tubular portion and the intermediate tapered tubular portion.

73. An apparatus, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion;

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions; and

means for radially expanding and plastically deforming the first tubular portion positioned within the second tubular portion.

74. An apparatus, comprising:

a first solid tubular portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second tubular portion;

an intermediate tapered tubular portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second tubular portions; and

an expansion device positioned within the second tubular portion for radially expanding and plastically deforming the first tubular portion;

wherein, before radial expansion and plastic deformation, the outside diameter of the second tubular portion is greater than the outside diameter of the first tubular portion.

75. An pipeline, comprising:

a first solid pipeline portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first tubular portion;

a second pipeline portion;

an intermediate tapered pipeline coupled to and positioned between the first and second pipeline portions; and

an expansion device positioned within the second pipeline portion for radially expanding and plastically deforming the first pipeline portion;

wherein the outside diameter of the second pipeline portion is greater than the outside diameter of the first pipeline portion.

76. A pipeline, comprising:

a first solid pipeline portion that defines one or more radial pressure relief passages at an end of the first pipeline portion;

a second pipeline portion; and

an intermediate tapered pipeline portion coupled to and positioned between the first and second pipeline portions;

wherein the outside diameter of the second pipeline portion is greater than the outside diameter of the first pipeline portion; and

wherein the wall thickness of the first pipeline portion is greater than the wall thickness of the second pipeline portion.
