Abstract

A screeding apparatus and method for screeding and smoothing an uncured concrete surface includes a vibrating member and a grade setting device adjustably mounted to said vibrating member. The screeding apparatus may include a wheeled support which at least partially supports the vibrating member and/or the grade setting device. The grade setting device may be vertically adjustable to set or indicate the desired grade of the concrete surface as the screeding apparatus is moved over and through the uncured concrete. The level of the screeding apparatus may be automatically adjustable to maintain a desired level and angle of attack of the vibrating member.

Claims (27)

1. A method of smoothing and screeding an uncured concrete surface, said method comprising:

providing a screeding device comprising a concrete surface working member and a grade setting device, said grade setting device being adjustable relative to the concrete surface working member, wherein said concrete surface working member comprises a vibrating member, and wherein providing a screeding device comprises providing a wheeled screeding device including a wheeled support frame for partially supporting at least one of said vibrating member and said grade setting device, said vibrating member and grade setting device being mounted at a rearward end of said wheeled support frame;

at least partially supporting said concrete surface working member on an uncured concrete surface;

vibrating said vibrating member while said vibrating member is at least partially supported on the uncured surface;

moving said screeding device at least one of over and through the uncured concrete;

adjusting said grade setting device relative to said concrete surface working member;

at least one of establishing and indicating a desired grade for the concrete surface with said grade setting device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing a screeding device comprises providing a screeding device having a handle portion at a forward end of said wheeled support frame.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein moving said screeding device comprises moving and steering said screeding device via said handle portion.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein moving said screeding device comprises driving at least one wheel of said wheeled support frame.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising adjusting said vibrating member relative to said wheeled support frame.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein adjusting said vibrating member comprises adjusting said vibrating member to adjust a height or grade of said vibrating member relative to said wheeled support frame.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein adjusting said vibrating member comprises adjusting said vibrating member to adjust a pitch of said vibrating member relative to said wheeled support frame and relative to the concrete surface.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising automatically adjusting said vibrating member relative to said wheeled support frame in response to an output of a level sensor so as to substantially maintain said wheeled support frame at a desired orientation relative to horizontal as said screeding device is moved over and through the uncured concrete in a screeding direction.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of establishing and indicating a desired grade comprises indicating a desired grade with said grade setting device.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of establishing and indicating a desired grade comprises establishing a desired grade with said grade setting device.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein establishing a desired grade comprises establishing a desired grade with a strike-off plow.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting said grade setting device comprises automatically adjusting said grade setting device in response to a laser receiver mounted to said grade setting device, said laser receiver receiving a laser signal from a laser reference system.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein said wheeled support frame includes at least one wheel and a frame portion mounted at said at least one wheel, said at least one wheel being movable through an uncured concrete surface;

wherein said concrete surface working member and said grade setting device are mounted at said frame portion;

and wherein said method further comprises balancing said wheeled screeding device about said at least one wheel such that said concrete surface working member is at least partially supported on the uncured concrete surface; and

screeding the uncured concrete surface with said screeding device while said concrete surface working member is at least partially supported on the uncured surface.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein balancing said wheeled screeding device comprises balancing said wheeled screeding device about a single axis of rotation of said at least one wheel, said concrete surface working member and said grade setting device being positioned at a first side of said single axis of rotation.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein balancing said wheeled screeding device comprises balancing said wheeled screeding device such that a first amount of weight of said wheeled screeding device is positioned at said first side of said single axis of rotation and a second amount of weight of said wheeled screeding device is positioned opposite said first side of said single axis of rotation, said first amount of weight being greater than said second amount of weight.

16. The method of claim 14 further comprising adjusting said wheeled screeding device to adjust a degree in which said concrete surface working member is supported on the uncured concrete surface.

17. The method of claim 14 further comprising adjusting an angle of said concrete surface working member about an axis generally parallel to a direction of travel of said wheeled screeding apparatus.
