Abstract

An apparatus and a method for performing a protocol that optimizes a transmission power in a network. The apparatus and the method perform a protocol that optimizes the transmission power in the network for point-to-multipoint communication (1:N). The apparatus includes a communication unit for sending and receiving a data packet through the air, and a control unit that outputs a control signal for controlling the transmission power according to connection information of the data packet received through the communication unit. The connection information includes a reception signal strength and/or link quality information. Since the transmission power is adjustable, communication is carried out among nodes of the network with an adequately minimum power consumption and a proper communication quality.

Claims (16)

1. An apparatus for controlling a transmission power of a data transmitting device in a network, comprising:

a control unit to receive a transmission power control requesting message from the data transmitting device, and transmit a transmission power adjustment message responsive to the transmission power control requesting message to control the transmission power of the data transmitting device, wherein the transmission power adjustment message comprises link information that is based on a link quality of the data transmitting device and a reference link quality of a receiving device; and

a power measuring unit to measure the received power from the data transmitting device.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a memory for storing the reference link quality.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the wireless network is a wireless local area network (WLAN).

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the link quality of the data transmitting device further includes a reception status parameter of a signal which includes the transmission power control requesting message.

5. The apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein at least one of a data error rate, an error correction rate, a bandwidth loss, and a delay is used as the reception status parameter.

6. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the reference link quality includes desired reference power of the receiving device.

7. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the control unit comprises:

a link quality measuring unit to determine the link quality;

a link quality comparison unit to compare the link quality of the data transmitting device with the reference link quality of the receiving device; and

a power adjusting unit to determine the link information indicative of a power adjustment value for the data transmitting device based on the comparison result and generating the transmission power adjustment message comprising the determined link information.

8. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the link information includes a received power from the data transmitting device and desired reference power of the receiving device.

9. An apparatus for controlling a transmission power of a data transmitting device in a network, comprising:

a control unit to receive a transmission power control requesting message from the data transmitting device, and transmit a transmission power adjustment message responsive to the transmission power control requesting message to control the transmission power of the data transmitting device, wherein the transmission power adjustment message comprises link information that is based on received power from the data transmitting device and desired reference power of a receiving device; and

a power measuring unit for measuring the received power from the data transmitting device.
