Abstract

Animal waste such as fecal material from swine, chicken, turkey, and cattle is converted into useful forms such as fertilizer, other types of soil builders, and even nutrient feed additives. Devices, systems, and methods are provided that allow economical conversion and in many instances, alleviate the production and release of undesirable gases such as sulfide and ammonia. In one embodiment, undesirable anaerobic and facultative anaerobic bacteria are killed at a greater rate than desirable soil compatible aerobic bacteria. The use of low temperature killing diminishes off gassing commonly associated with other techniques, and the use of gas trapping additives such as zeolites provides enhanced soil building qualities such as slow release of nitrogen and slow release of moisture to soil. The methods allow convenient adjustment of composition, allowing conversion of waste into tailored designer fertilizer suited for particular soils. Other embodiments provide other soil building qualities as well as nutrient qualities for feedstock used in animal husbandry such as aquaculture.

Claims (31)

1. A system for treating animal waste, comprising:

a) a flow stream with an input for watery animal waste;

b) a pump with adjustable flow rate within the flow stream;

c) an oxidant injector coupled to a stream of oxygen for adding oxygen to said flow stream;

d) an adjustable power ultrasonic generator connected to inject sonic energy into the flow stream;

e) at least one temperature detector operably connected to a manual system or automated circuitry to control at least the adjustable pump or adjustable power ultrasonic generator; and

f) an output;

wherein the manual system or automated circuitry is configured to respond to the temperature detector by controlling the maximum temperature of the flow stream to 50 degrees Centigrade or less.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an input for a micronutrient coupled to a source of the micronutrient for adding micronutrient to said flow stream.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the micronutrient is selected from the group consisting of zinc, iron, molybdenum and selenium.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a transducer for detecting sonic energy delivered to the flow stream by the ultrasonic generator.

5. The system of claim 1 , comprising a means for controlling the power output to the ultrasonic generator based on a detected increase in flow stream temperature.

6. The system of claim 1 , comprising a software algorithm;

for controlling pump rate to maintain maximum sensed temperature below 50 degrees Centigrade.

7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a tank located downstream of the ultrasonic generator and downstream of the oxidant injector, the tank sized to allow an extended residence time of sonication-dispersed material with oxidant.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the oxidant injector is located downstream from the ultrasonic generator.

9. A system for treating animal waste, comprising:

a) a flow stream with an input for watery animal waste;

b) a pump with adjustable flow rate within the flow stream;

c) an oxidant injector coupled to a stream of oxygen for adding oxygen to said flow stream;

d) an injector coupled to a carbon dioxide enriched waste gas stream for adding carbon dioxide to said flow stream;

e) an adjustable power ultrasonic generator connected to inject sonic energy into the flow stream;

f) at least one temperature detector operably connected to a manual system or automated circuitry to control at least the adjustable pump or adjustable power ultrasonic generator; and

g) an output;

wherein the manual system or automated circuitry is configured to respond to the temperature detector by controlling the maximum temperature of the flow stream to 50 degrees Centigrade or less.

10. The system of claim 9 , further comprising an input for a micronutrient coupled to a source of micronutrient for adding micronutrient to said flow stream.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the micronutrient is selected from the group consisting of zinc, iron, molybdenum and selenium.

12. The system of claim 9 , further comprising a transducer for detecting sonic energy delivered to the flow stream by the ultrasonic generator.

13. The system of claim 9 , comprising a means for controlling the power output to the ultrasonic generator based on a detected increase in flow stream temperature.

14. The system of claim 9 , comprising a software algorithm for controlling pump rate to maintain maximum sensed temperature below 50 degrees Centigrade.

15. The system of claim 9 , further comprising a tank located downstream of the ultrasonic generator and downstream of the oxidant injector, the tank sized to allow an extended residence time of sonication-dispersed material with oxidant.
