Abstract

A miniaturized spectrometer/spectrophotometer system and methods are disclosed. A probe tip including one or more light sources and a plurality of light receivers is provided. A first spectrometer system receives light from a first set of the plurality of light receivers. A second spectrometer system receives light from a second set of the plurality of light receivers. A processor, wherein the processor receives data generated by the first spectrometer system and the second spectrometer system, wherein an optical measurement of a sample under test is produced based on the data generated by the first and second spectrometer systems. Improved shade matching/prediction results are obtained through the use of volumes/regions, preferably polygons, around shades in a shade system.

1. A method for matching shade of a dental object to a plurality of known shades, the method comprising:

determining a region in color space for each shade of the plurality of known shades;

taking a color measurement of the dental object;

determining whether the color measurement of the dental object is within the region for each shade of the plurality of known shades; and

determining one or more matched shade candidates from the plurality of known shades responsive to the determination of the location of the color measurement of the dental object in color space.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

if the color measurement is within the region of one shade of the plurality of known shades, reporting the one shade as a principal shade of the dental object;

if the color measurement is within the region of more than one shade of the plurality of known shades, calculating ΔE for each of the more than one shades based on the color measurement and on a color value for each of the more than one shade, and reporting a shade of the more than one shade that has a lowest ΔE as the principal shade of the dental object; and

if the color measurement is not within any region of any shade of the plurality of known shades, for each shade of the plurality of known shades, calculating a distance between the color measurement and a nearest edge of the region for that shade in color space, and reporting a shade for which the distance between the color measurement in color space and a nearest edge of the region for that shade has the lowest distance.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising storing the plurality of known shades in a computer memory.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein each region is a polygon in color space for a particular shade of the plurality of known shades and the polygons are based on complementary changes of value (L) and chromacity (C) of a human observer.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein each region is a polygon in color space for a particular shade of the plurality of known shades and the polygons and each polygon defines value (L) and chromacity (C) parameters for the particular shade.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein a size of the polygon varies based on a hue parameter.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein each region is a polygon in color space for a particular shade of the plurality of known shades and a set of polygons are determined in color space for each shade of the plurality of shades in the shade system, wherein the set of polygons include a polygon based on value (L) and chromacity (C), a polygon based on value (L) and hue (h), and a polygon based on chromacity (C) and hue (h), wherein the set of polygons define a region of color space for each shade.

8. The method of claim 2 , wherein the principal shade is displayed on a display screen concurrently with a secondary shade is displayed.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein, based on the color measurement of the dental object, value (L), chromacity (C) and hue (h) are determined for the dental object.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein each region is a polygon in color space for a particular shade of the plurality of known shades and a set of polygons are determined in color space for each shade of the plurality of shades in the shade system, wherein the set of polygons include a polygon based on value (L) and chromacity (C), a polygon based on value (L) and hue (h), and a polygon based on chromacity (C) and hue (h), wherein the set of polygons define a region of color space for each shade, wherein, for each particular shade, a determination is made of whether the measured L, C and h for the dental object result in the dental object being within the region of color space for that particular shade.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein, for each particular shade, a determination is made of a distance between the measured L, C and h for the dental object and a nearest edge of a polygon corresponding to that particular shade.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein, for each particular shade, a determination is made of a ΔE between the measured L, C and h for the dental object and that particular shade.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

if the color measurement is within the region of one shade of the plurality of known shades, reporting the one shade as a principal shade of the dental object;

if the color measurement is within the region of more than one shade of the plurality of known shades, reporting a shade of the more than one shade as a principal shade of the dental object that satisfies a first predetermined condition as compared to the remaining shades of the more than on shade; and

if the color measurement is not within any region of any shade of the plurality of known shades, reporting a shade as a principal shade of the dental object that satisfies a second predetermined condition.

14. A system for matching shade of a dental object to a plurality of known shades comprising:

a memory for storing the plurality of known shades;

a processor programmed to determine a region in color space for each shade of the stored plurality of known shades; and

a spectrometer for taking a color measurement of the dental object, wherein the processor is further programmed to determine whether the color measurement of the dental object is within the region for each shade of the plurality of known shades and to determine one or more matched shade candidates from the plurality of known shades responsive to the determination of the location of the color measurement of the dental object in color space.
